White Collar Fic: Four and the Fifth
Written for whitecollar100 Challenge #005 – Case

Title: Four and the Fifth
Pairing/Characters: Neal, Peter, Reese, OC
Rating: PG13
Word Count: 300
Spoilers: Pilot
Summary: Peter's the FBI agent but Neal's the one who solves the case
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

Neal strode into Peter's office, placing a copy of the morning edition newspaper front and center on his desk, tapping the headline with his finger vigorously.

"I know who stole those bonds."

o--o

Mozzie's tip on where the man's hotel room was was good, but Peter went in first - gun drawn. Once he cleared it Neal entered and saw the evidence of a hurried meal half-eaten and frenzied packing.

"We just missed him!"

o--o

Staking out Terminal Four at JFK Airport was Neal's idea. Peter trusted in the system to flag passports, but Neal scanned the security line carefully before gesturing Peter to join him in approaching someone.

"Excuse me, Ma'am, could you please step out of line?"

o--o

The woman protested, grumbling under her breath in something that sounded like Russian, but followed them to a security table and opened her carry-on bag as ordered. It held the basics - toothbrush, toothpaste, clothing - nothing more.

"Wait... The lining of this bag... It's too thick for the material..."

o--o

What had looked like thick tapestry was really thin fabric with a stiff backing - stiff enough to hide paper bonds between it and the fabric exterior. When the wig came off what had seemed like an ugly woman became an uglier man.

"Nice job, but next time, don't try to pull off heels - they're a bear to walk in."

o--o

After Reese congratulated them both on how quickly they'd closed the case they headed back to Peter's office to polish off the final paperwork.

"What I want to know," Peter mused as he eyed his partner, "is how you know what heels feel like to walk in."

"Peter..." Neal just offered him a shrug and his trademark con-man smile. "You know I'm going to have to take the Fifth on that one."

Confession
My friend ladygray99, who mods whitecollar100, asked authors in her last mod post if they could write a case from beginning to end in 300 words or less.

Apparently the answer is yes.

I could have made a 100 word draft, focusing on just the dialog bits, however I didn't hold back on the first draft and I ended up with around 185 words. I figured I could pad to 200, but I wanted to add the snarky ending onto it. That, and some padding, got me to about 260. It took me quite a while to find more words to put in to get it to 300, but hopefully it just reads as more descriptive and not just padded.

So here you are, L! Casefic in 300 words! I hope you like it.

I confess I'm amused that a fic titled Four and the Fifth (the terminal and the amendment) ended up being written for the fifth prompt at the WC100 comm.

Thanks,

Emma DeMarais

This is great. I knew if anyone could rise to the challenge you could. Of course I now want to see Neal in heels. :)

Oh yeah! A really close shave, a nice wig, the right outfit... He'd be dangerous in a con skirt. Hehehe

Aw! Very cute--good thing Neal knows his high heels. (I bet Peter will spend a lot of time pondering that . . .)

Thanks!

And by pondering my dirty mind goes to Peter alone in bed while Elle's away... /grins/
