Covert Affairs Fic: Another Day at the Office Another Night at the Bar

Title: Another Day at the Office Another Night at the Bar
Pairing/Characters: Annie, Auggie
Rating: PG13
Spoilers: Pilot
Summary: Annie and Auggie go out for a drink after a day at the office
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

"Get out! You cannot be serious!"

Auggie took a sip of his beer and nodded in Annie's direction.

"I kid you not. Though Bennington had to tell me she was blushing when she admitted it. Of course she gave me the cold shoulder for a week after that."

Annie gave her friend a playful shove.

"Serves you right for asking if a woman's put on weight. Don't you have any manners?"

"I do!" Auggie protested. "But I've also got fifty bucks riding in the pool for when she's finally going to admit she's pregnant."

"She has been kind of glowy lately," Annie mused, swirling the last of her drink in her glass. "I just thought it was some new boyfriend or something."

"Some new boyfriend who knocked her up," Auggie retorted.

Annie put her drink aside to stare at Auggie. "I still can't believe you could tell she'd gained weight just from listening to her walk."

"I swear..." Auggie put up his hand in a sort of boy scout style salute. "No one told me what she looked like. I just heard the difference over time and knew it had to be because she was heavier."

Annie leaned in closer. "So can you tell how much a woman weighs even if you've never seen her before. I mean before..." Her voice faltered, trailing off awkwardly.

"Yes," Auggie said, finding her hand and patting it. "I can tell even with women I've never met. There's just a kind of resonance with how hard their shoes hit the floor. It's part of how I can tell men apart too - their dress shoes make different sounds if they're light and scuffling versus heavy and clunking."

Annie put a hand on his arm. "Stop," she whispered. "There's a woman coming this way, walking alone, in heels. Listen and tell me what you can figure out about her."

They sat in silence, their table far enough away from other patrons that Auggie could hear footsteps pass in the overall din. Once the woman was gone, Auggie spoke.

"She's about a hundred and twenty-five pounds and is about five foot seven or eight."

"Get out!" Annie gaped in wonder. "How could you tell that?"

"She's also a bottle blonde, has fake breasts and a knockoff Prada bag."

This time Annie was left speechless for a moment, eyes going back and forth to the woman now standing talking to another woman near the back of the bar. "How..."

"It's Elaina from the fourth floor," Auggie admitted. "I heard her bitching about her new shoes today and how they squeak. I knew it was her the second I heard that same noise as before."

Annie smacked him across the arm.

"Cheater!" She smirked at him wickedly. "Just for that, I'm buying new shoes and switching my perfume on the same day."

Auggie put a hand to his chest. "You wound me! What have I done to deserve such punishment?"

"Oh no, my friend!" Annie wagged a finger at him. "Punishment would be me rearranging the furniture in your office."

"Remind me never to get on your bad side," Auggie muttered, more amused than anything, as he took a drink of his beer. "Tell you what. Tomorrow at the office? You pick anyone you want and we'll do this again - fair and square. You can even ask them when they started with the Agency or if they've met me before to prove it."

"You're on." Annie polished off her drink. "So, do you need a ride home or should I just expect you'll find some lovely lady to escort you?"

"I'm good," Auggie told her. "I'll take a cab." As she rose, Auggie put a hand out to stop her from leaving. "Annie?"

"Yes?" she answered, looking worried at his suddenly serious expression.

Her worry evaporated when Auggie burst out in to a wide smile.

"Don't ever lose the kitten heels."

Confession
New Fandom!

It's just a quick thing I tossed off at 1AM for fun, figuring why the hell not?

This is my 23rd fandom I've ficced and I find it interesting that all 23 are television fandoms.

Hmm... Yuletide has yet to get me to fic books or movies or traditional fairy tales and I'm still too daunted by Neil Gaiman to try playing in the Sandman universe though I desperately want to.

So, anyone have any suggestions from the new fall schedule as to new shows worth ficcing? So far I'm underwhelmed by The Whole Truth (my allegiance to Rob Morrow only goes so far and so far is two episodes) and I haven't picked up any others as of yet.

Thanks,

Emma DeMarais

YAY YOU WROTE AUGGIE!

I couldn't honestly care less about Annie (I don't hate her, I'm just not invested in her) but I ADORE Auggie. More, please? Maybe Auggie and Jay because I think Chris G and Sendhil R together would be yum on toast.

As for new shows worth ficcing, the boys in the revamped Hawaii 5-0 are clearly already married. And very pretty. It's an entertaining show if not terribly realistic.

I understand being underwhelmed by The Whole Truth, but the episode that just aired with Judd Hirsch might be worth a watch. How long do you think before DK shows up as a guest star?

Auggie is ♥!

Yeah, Annie's necessary, but not the reason I watch. I'm all for Auggie, Ben and Jai, though I'm kind of interested in Joan/Arthur as well. I wasn't much of a Chris Gorham fan before, but I was definitely interested when I saw a) Cam from Numb3rs and b) Mohinder! and c) an actual disabled character holding down a real full time job and kicking ass at it.

I've heard H50 is pretty and slashy, but I haven't indulged yet. Alex is going to get leads in shows until something sticks apparently so if he's getting good ratings with this one then I'll have to check it out.

I saw bits of the JH ep as Mel watched it, but I'll have to watch the whole thing at some point. DK's going to be on SVU next week so he's clearly on the guest star circuit now that his own pilot didn't get picked up. Oddly I don't think DK will guest star on RM's show. One because I think they're sick of each other and two I think RM would totally gloat about having a show while David doesn't.

Then again, TWT might be canceled before he gets a chance to guest. Hehehe

Thanks for being my sole commenter. It's sad to write a new fandom and find no one in it cares. /sniff/

Same thing here. Auggie is clearly the best character in the cast, hands down (though Jai is sexy in his own right).

Also, icon love!

Yay! Another Auggie fan! Srsly, he's who got me to give the show a chance and then when I found out Sendhil from Heroes was cast? (And Kari Matchett from Leverage? And Eion Bailey from Numb3rs? And Peter Gallagher from While You Were Sleeping? And Gregory Itzin from 24? And Emmanuelle Vaugier from SV/SPN? And Anne Dudek from House/Bones?) Yeah, USA seems to know how to cast well. /nods/

Thanks for giving this a read!

Aw, this is amazing. And in character, and well-written, and YAY for Annie/Auggie love!

Have you tried posting this to covert_fiction or annie_auggie? Because they both are in need of lovely fics like this!
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on October 9th, 2010 01:16 am (UTC)
Thank you! I'm so glad you think I pulled off their characters. I was trying hard to capture their voices.

FWIW, With 23 fandoms I really don't crosspost anywhere. I tend to pick one fic comm per fandom and stick with it. covertaffairstv seemed to have the most people and it took fic so I chose them even though covert_fiction was more fic oriented. I don't do pairing oriented comms (unless they're run by friends and/or offer up a good challenge I like writing for) for the same reason - I despise writing up fic headers with a fiery passion. (You can imagine with over 20 fandoms and each comm can ask for slightly different headers? It's easy to go nuts and tear your hair out trying to get it right.) I've written so many hundreds of fic and I'd have written a lot more if I didn't have to come up with full headers for each of them! LOL

Thanks for taking the time to come by and read this. It's much appreciated.
