Numb3rs Fic: Breaking the Mold
Written for numb3rs100 Challenge #286 – Change

Title: Breaking the Mold
Pairing/Characters: Withheld
Rating: PG
Word Count: 300
Spoilers: Democracy, Hardball
Summary: A Cal Sci math professor speaks at a Senate subcommittee on education
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

The head of the Senate subcommittee adjusted his glasses and referred to a list in front of him.

"I believe next we're to hear from a math professor at Cal Sci?"

"Yes, sir."

He watched as the man adjusted the microphone on the table in front of him to his height and cleared his throat before reading from a prepared statement.

"In one word, education is this country's future. Without today's education the future will have no inventors, no engineers, no scientists. Jobs that require special skills and knowledge will go unfilled or be outsourced, causing payrolls to be spent overseas instead of being recycled into our economy, strengthening it. I'm here today to stand up for those being denied an education because they don't fit the perfect mold of overachieving high school student. This bill would assist those with nontraditional educations such as homeschooling, people who didn't finish high school but deserve a second chance, the disabled who can't afford the special technology needed to attend school... Everyone," he stressed the word, "deserves a chance to go to college. Cal Sci supports this bill and asks Congress to pass it and give some brilliant minds a chance to achieve instead of being told they don't fit the mold."

The Senator glanced back down at his list.

"Thank you, Dr. Kittner."

"Excuse me, Senator," Oswald interrupted. "I just wanted to add..." He put aside his notes. "I was just a street kid, a high school drop out, until Cal Sci's special program gave me a chance to change my life for the better. Now I have a doctorate and I consult with the FBI. Cal Sci's program made me. I'm just asking you today, would you rather have more people like me or more street kids? The decision is yours."
