Numb3rs Fic: Not Her Not Him
Written for numb3rs100 Challenge January 2011 Rewind – New York, Time, Formal Wear, Champagne

Title: Not Her Not Him
Pairing/Characters: Billy/Robin
Rating: PG13
Word Count: 400
Spoilers: Series
Summary: Robin's New York City law firm's soiree is crashed by a familiar face
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

168. New York

A black tie event in New York City is the last place Robin expects to see Don's old Fugitive Recovery partner, but there Billy is: scruffed up in leather and denim and a three day beard tackling a busboy as he tries to run away through the crowd.

He flashes his badge to the gaping lawyers around him after the perp is cuffed, giving them the standard explanation, which falters when he lays eyes on Robin.

"I thought you and Don..."

Robin cuts him off with a curt shake of her head.

"It didn't work out. I live here now."

014. Time

It's late by the time Billy returns and the soiree is winding down.

His body's vibrating with adrenaline energy. She remembers Don like that after a raid; it seemed impossible to burn it all off.

That was when the doubts started creeping in. Liz had been enough to sate him, but not her? Liz had asserted that Don loved only Robin, but when Don had sworn he'd spent the night at Liz's just consoling her after a bad shoot, she refused to believe it.

Their eyes meet. The air crackles between them. A wordless understanding is reached.

"My room's upstairs."

057. Formal Wear

Moonlight fills the room from the drapes she forgot to close. Her formal gown lays on the floor, unzipped and askew, as forgotten as her heels shed haphazardly from the hotel room door on.

She hopes she locked the door and put the do not disturb sign up.

She only wishes the sign would work on her.

Her mind too troubled to sleep, she casts a glance at the naked man beside her in bed.

Billy sleeps soundly, serenely, freckled lips upturned in some hidden mirth in slumber.

Robin tosses and turns again; respite is elusive to a guilty mind.

091. Champagne

It's early, and she could use more sleep, but she can't face Billy after what they did.

She remembers there's a champagne brunch starting shortly and it won't hurt her status at the firm to get there early.

She pulls the sheet from the bed around her in belated modesty; if Billy was still asleep, he's awake now.

She can't even look at him, just turns her head to the side to address him unseen.

"You can let yourself out."

He's up in a flash, strong arms encircling her gently.

"I'm not him," his morning voice rasps. "Robin, please... Stay."

Confession
Two years back I had this in my January Rewind Confession: "I confess I have no authority or special knowledge on the subject of world religions." Amusingly, this semester? I have a World Religions class. ;-) Also amusing, 2009's and last January's Rewind were both Don/Robin and now I've broken them up and made this Billy/Robin. Talk about rare pairings! But that's what the muse gave me and I've learned to not fight with her - well to pick my fights very very carefully as I'm bound to lose.

My Confession this time around? I confess I wrote this fic in reverse order: last drabble first and so on. Weird, huh? I also rewrote the ending. I had originally planned it to end with Robin telling Billy he could let himself out, but I couldn't seem to leave it like that and ended up having to spend ages slicing words from the drabble to make enough room for a secondary ending. Grr. Argh.

My apologies for using the laziest spoilers around. This is my first time using "Series" instead of just certain seasons. I figured Billy's from Season 1, Liz is from the middle, Liz and Robin's conversation is from the interim as is her job offer in New York and Don/Robin getting together (supposedly for good) is from the end. I figured I could spend the next twenty minutes looking up exact episode titles, but since the show's off the air I'm far less worried about people not having seen parts of it.

Very special thanks to beta melissima for her assistance with this fic.

Thanks,

Interesting. I never pictured these two together but I can so see Robin and Don falling apart just like that.
