Title: A Split Second
Pairing/Characters: Peter, Diana, Clinton, Neal, Matthew, OCs
Rating: PG13
Word Count: 200

Summary: Peter finally brings Matthew Keller to justice even if it's too late for Neal
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

A split second...

There was a split second in which Peter knew he didn't have to shoot, that Keller was about to surrender his gun.

A split second then the sound of a gunshot rent the air and Keller fell.

Peter didn't have to check his pulse; his aim was true.

Clinton and Diana could back him up. They'd had their guns on Keller's henchmen so they wouldn't have noticed the tiny movement of Keller's arm as it relaxed in preparation for lowering his weapon. They'd both swear it was a good shoot.

That split second weighed on Peter's conscience until he got to the hospital to visit Neal. The plastic surgeons were doing their best, but odds were the Keller had done too good a job and that handsome face would be scarred for life.

Peter closed his eyes and remembered finding Neal: his face bloody, sliced up so badly that he'd only barely recognized Neal from his hair and anklet.

In that memory, the split second disappeared and Peter found the peace he needed to tell Neal it was all over - for good.

It wasn't the kind of justice Peter preferred, but it was what Keller deserved.

Confession
I confess I broke one of my own rules with this fic. I have a thing against calling people by their last names unless it's called for in dialogue. (Which is, by itself, terribly problematic in the Criminal Minds fandom in particular.) But I felt fairly certain that if I said Matthew few people would have a clue who I was talking about, even with the headers, so I bent the rules and called him Keller.

/misses Mike Kellerman now/
/misses Laurence Dominic too/
/is clearly a big Reed Diamond fan/

To those of you I inadvertently squicked, sorry for messing up Neal's pretty face! Just remember it's only for the span of one very AU drabble and try to forgive me. ;-)

BTW, I am amused that I already have a fic called Split Second. I actually had to check my fic tracking document (which is embarrassingly long) to make sure I didn't duplicate the title. I figure the difference of an A and the fact that Split Second is in a different fandom meant I was good for self-plagiarizing. Hehehe

Thanks,

Emma DeMarais

I think that is something that Peter would do to protect Peter and Elizabeth.

Yeah, I don't think it's too much of a stretch to think if Keller did that to Neal that he'd consider Elizabeth off limits. It's just protecting his loved ones - even if it goes against his personal ethics.

Oh, ouch. I believe that Peter would do that, to make sure Keller couldn't hurt them again, but that little second would weigh on him.

You nailed it; that's exactly how it would go down.

:( Poor Neal. This is going to be hard on him. Also poor Peter. He really isn't a killer by nature even if Keller so had it coming. Good work. Great look at Peter and great prompt use.

Thanks! I wanted to see if I could do something big for this prompt for your comm. Keller's such a catalyst for both of them, he was an easy choice to pick for this.
