White Collar Fic: The Greatest Cake is Not a Lie
Written for whitecollar100 Challenge #041 – Evidence

Title: The Greatest Cake is Not a Lie
Pairing/Characters: Peter/Elizabeth, Neal
Rating: G
Word Count: 200
Spoilers: Free Fall
Summary: Elizabeth asks for proof and Neal happily provides it
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

Peter walked into his house and blinked at the candy colored apocalypse that met his eyes.

"When did my home became cake central?" he asked, putting aside his coat and briefcase, eyes never leaving the sugary fancy layer cakes spread over just about every horizontal surface.

"Oh hi, honey!" Elizabeth appeared from the kitchen and kissed his cheek briskly before handing him a fork. "You're just in time for the tasting!"

Neal emerged from the kitchen carrying two handfuls of forks which he laid on whatever tiny space was left on the dining room table.

"Peter! Want some cake?" he joshed.

"Neal wanted to know why I didn't use his bakery for my catering jobs," Elizabeth explained.

"Since it is The Greatest Cake," Neal pointed out, absolutely lacking in humility.

Elizabeth slipped her arm through her husband's and tugged him close. "I told him if it really was The Greatest Cake, he had to prove it to me."

"Which I had no problem with," Neal interjected.

"No absolutely not," Elizabeth agreed while Peter still stood staring at all the cakes.

"So welcome to the evidence room!" Neal exclaimed, splaying out his arms to denote the expansive dessert spread. "Let's eat!"

Confession
Yes, the title is a play on "The cake is a lie" from the video game Portal.

But then, it's nowhere near as good as The Greatest Cake being a play on The Great Escape.

Hee!

/adores White Collar punnage/

Thanks,

Emma DeMarais

Re: Confession
LOL! Love this! And is it coincidence that I posted a story today that mentions Neal's bakery? ;o)

Re: Confession
Ha! Funny!

You know since I don't really read fic I wondered if anyone had already made the same pun with the title as I had.

Re: Confession
I have to admit that I didn't get the pun until someone explained it to me. I just wrote a 150 word drabble that explains where Neal gets his steady income from. Because I figured the bakery must be making some profit...

Re: Confession
One hopes! A bakery in Manhattan has to have crazy rent to pay!

Honestly if they needed to be profitable all Neal would have to do would be pass out business cards to attractive well off women in NYC and he'd be set. ;-)

Re: Confession
Didn't Neal tell Moz to buy the bakery? If so, I don't think he'll be paying rent. Well, maybe he bought the business but not the building... At any rate, it has the greatest cake in town, so I imagine people will be lining up in front of the door. :o)

Re: Confession
Oh, I'm certain he bought the bakery business but not the building. Buildings in Manhattan go for scary amounts of millions - no way Neal could just buy it on a whim. Besides, a judge had his quarters above the bakery so the bakery was only one small tenant in an otherwise huge multistory building.

I'm pretty sure NYC has its share of superlative named businesses, but I would probably want to test out the claims of a place called The Greatest Cake. Hehehe

Yum! So often your drabbles make me want something. Now I want cake! Thank you for this great drabble and great prompt use.

(And I love the title.)

More people read than ever get around to commenting. You know that as well as I do.

I know. I'm just sad that with my college workload I only seem to get to publish fic on the least popular reading days like Friday. /sigh/
