Sherlock Fic: Ever After Me
Posted to sherlockbbc

Title: Ever After Me
Pairing/Characters: Sherlock/John
Rating: PG13
Spoilers: None
Summary: John can tell Sherlock's in trouble from his text messages
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

The last text message had done it.

John had texted over his regular checking in message only to get back the most obtuse of the increasingly obtuse messages he'd been getting in return since he left 221B Baker Street almost a week earlier.

The train had made John impatient so he gave the taxi driver an extra couple of pounds to get creative in the London traffic.

Almost throwing the final fare at the driver, he bounded up the front steps, heading into his abode at a clip that left him near to breathless.

"I'm home!" he called out, glancing around for a sign of Sherlock.

A silent empty room met his eye which was worrisome, but worse, there was chemistry apparatus spread out over one of the tables. Sherlock had clearly been experimenting.

"Sherlock?" he called out again, this time his voice uncertain.

"Watson!" came a disembodied voice. "How jolly good to have you back!"

The voice sounded like Sherlock's, except for every word past his name.

Stepping forward he found Sherlock laying on the floor on the other side of the couch, wearing his pajamas and robe and staring at a single digestive biscuit in his hand.

"What are you doing down there?"

"I've been trying to figure out the exact amount of pressure needed to compress dry oats into a biscuit with sufficient integrity to experience less than 10 percent loss during shipping and handling." Sherlock's glazed eyes shifted from the biscuit to John. "But it's lovely to see you. I'll be with you in a moment."

John's gaze went from Sherlock, who returned to being engrossed in his biscuit, to the chemistry set and back.

"What the devil have you done?" John exclaimed. "Please don't tell me you cooked up some sort of recreational drug in our home and taken it, untested, no less!"

"Nineteen." Sherlock tossed the cookie aside on to the couch then rose, springing up with a coiled energy that made John take a step back. "With a margin of error of 2 since I don't have the ingredient list handy. The kind of binders they use really makes a difference in the coherence and potential elasticity."

John took him by the shoulders to get his attention.

"What," he said slowly, "did you take?"

"What makes you think I've taken anything?" Sherlock said, a tinge of defensiveness in his voice that sounded completely foreign to John's ears.

John blinked for a second. "How about everything? God! I've a mind to ask you who you are and where the hell is the real Sherlock Holmes!"

"You don't have to raise your voice, John," Sherlock told him, unfazed. "I'm right here. Right... Here..." He shifted forward, closer to John, and let his long graceful fingers play with John's lapels. The smile on his face seemed oddly wrong, increasing John's discomfort.

"No trying to distract me," John protested, trying to bat away Sherlock's hands, but failing. "You're going to tell me what you took, do you understand?"

"Yes." Sherlock stopped short, his hands on John's lapels. "Yes, I finally understand everything." As John let out a long sigh, Sherlock's smile turned into a happy goofy grin. "I love you, you old sot."

"Bloody hell," John cursed. He grabbed hold of a slightly tottering Sherlock and guided him to bed, all but forcing him under the covers. "Stay!" He got his medical bag and returned, checking Sherlock's vital signs and trying to avoid the swoony looks the man in the bed was giving him. "You could have really hurt yourself," he chastened, more out of worry and love than admonishment.

"No," Sherlock countered. "That would never happen. You'd always come rescue me at the last minute and restore me to health so we could live happily ever after."

He closed his eyes, looking blissful and blissfully unaware of the drug hangover to follow later.

Convinced Sherlock was in no danger, John sat on the edge of the bed, letting his own heart rate come down to normal.

In that moment he understood the mess of a text that had been his signal to come home to take care of Sherlock.

"Too far once upon a. Come back and ever after me."

Confession
New fandom!

I've kind of lost count now that I'm past twenty so let me go look up which number this is.

/muzak playing in background/

Hmm... We have a conundrum here... I have 23 fandoms listed on my profile as ones I've written (not counting Buffy and Angel for crossovers). However, I *started* a Hawaii Five-0 fic last month so that should be fandom 24, only I didn't finish and publish that fic yet.

/taps finger thoughtfully/

Okay, I'm going to honor that H50 was my 24th fandom because I at least started writing the fic. That means Sherlock gets the vaunted position of 25th fandom! Not too bad! LOL

I can't say if I'll stick with Sherlock BBC or also write RDJ movieverse or even original bookverse (I'm a longtime Sherlock Holmes fan), but for now step aside Basil Rathbone and Jeremy Brett! It's time for Cumberbatch! /laughs like a Moriarty villain/

This fic was written for a prompt at sherlockbbc's Make Me a Monday, so credit for the plot bunny goes to prompter fenm.

Thanks,

Emma DeMarais

Oh, lovely! Awww, it's a fairy tale... with a sociopath and a surly doctor.

Thanks for this! Though I'm not sure if this is the text one, the ecstasy one, or a bit of both? Whichever it is, it's lovely!

Yay! You saw it!

I did try for a bit of both since they were most definitely fitting bunnies.

I'm so delighted you liked it! I was a bit nervous being new to the fandom and all.

Thanks for the lovely promptage and for taking the time to come and comment!

Welcome!!!!
I'm soooo pleased to see you in this fandom having followed your work avidly at Numb3rs!
Just got to get you interested in 'Inspector Lewis' and my reading life would be complete

Re: Welcome!!!!
Well, hello again! It's been awhile since I've seen you at my LJ!

I'm pleased to have another fandom in common with you now. I'm looking forward to more Sherlock canon (and hating the wait!) so I can try writing more in the fandom. I have another piece looming which might come up next month, but for now I'm just chuffed to finally add this to my official list.

I've not heard of Inspector Lewis, but if you want to tell me about it to see if you can pique my interest, go ahead. I'm always trying to talk people into watching my fave TV show, Miracles, so I should listen when other people want to talk up their shows.

Again, lovely to see you! Thanks for taking the time to comment!

Such a twisted and oddly romantic little fairytale! I look forward to you playing in this playground.

Thank you so much! I've got another Sherlock fic coming next month at least. :-)

Yay for new fandoms though I don't know how you manage 25 I've got 3 fandoms I'm active in and since I joined the Sherlock fandom, the previous two are less loved these days.

What I really came here to say though was that I loved your fic.
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on April 19th, 2011 08:36 pm (UTC)
Thank you so much! That means a lot to me.

I was monofannish at first, but I'm so wickedly prolific it wasn't hard to toss in a few other fic in other fandoms from time to time, especially as part of Yuletide. (I'm coming up on my 700th fic in my primary fandom of Numb3rs.) It also helps that I specialize in drabble and ficlet length pieces so they're easier and faster to put out.

And yes, many of my other fandoms are less loved now (I'd have to force myself to write Heroes and Dollhouse at this point) but I do like to try to publish one fic a year minimum in each of my fandoms.

I am soooooooooooo Happy to see you writing Sherlock!!!!!!

And I love mental time traveling Sherlock. Very fun.
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on April 20th, 2011 07:10 am (UTC)
Yay for another fandom we have in common! Too bad there's not a drabble comm for the fandom, eh?
ladygray99ladygray99 on April 20th, 2011 07:22 am (UTC)
Actually I think there's one lurking around but with pretty strict rules.
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on April 20th, 2011 07:24 am (UTC)
Bah! You and I both know that's nowhere near as much fun. :-)

Damn straight.
