White Collar Fic: A Strangled Whisper
Written for whitecollar100 Challenge #045 – Whisper

Title: A Strangled Whisper
Pairing/Characters: Peter/Neal
Rating: PG13
Word Count: 200
Spoilers: Pilot
Summary: Peter can't stop thinking about how he almost lost Neal for good
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

The ascot around his neck is every bit as pretentious looking as Mozzie's, but it hurts Peter to see it on Neal. As good as he is undercover, he can't help but look away in a futile effort to hide his wince. He knows what lies under the silk cloth: hand shaped bruises from a lethal grip that almost took Neal away from him forever.

A gentle hand on his shoulder is Neal's way of assuaging his grief, but as much as Peter sinks into his touch, it doesn't help.

"He could have killed you," Peter mutters, full of self-loathing.

Neal crouches down to force him to look at him and it really is forced. Peter hasn't been able to look him in the eye since he brought him home from the hospital.

"You found me. You saved me." Neal's raspy whisper is accusation in itself. No matter what words that ruined voice speaks, all Peter hears is that he failed Neal.

Peter clutches Neal close to him, pressing a kiss to his hair as his arms tighten around him.

"Not soon enough." As he chokes back his guilt, his voice is almost as raspy as Neal's. "Not soon enough."

It is so much fun to write about a stalwart FBI agent and the adorable brilliant creature he loves and feels responsible for, innit? *grins at you* And this is gorgeously done!

Oh, Poor Neal. And it must be killing Peter to hear the damage done to that beautiful voice.
