He'd stayed in much nicer places, that was for sure. This was no Four Seasons.

Neal sat on the bed in the generic hotel room, listening to the bathroom tap drip slowly and maddeningly. He'd tightened it repeatedly, but to no avail. A nicer hotel would never have a leaky faucet. A crappy one would laugh if he called to complain about it. This place? They'd fix it but they'd remember who asked and Neal couldn't risk being remembered.

The days had become a blur of travel and anonymous hotels, mixing overnights in little towns with longer stays in bigger cities he felt were fairly safe. Matthew had stopped contacting him after he gave up even having a burner cell phone. Neal wasn't sure if it was the inconvenience of not being able to send a text or leave a voicemail or if he'd finally ditched him.

Taking a breath, he started considering a counter attack. Matthew had no one he cared about Neal could threaten and nothing in the world he lacked so he couldn't be bribed. On the other hand, he did have enemies.

Getting in bed with the Russians sounded like a horrible idea, but as ideas went, they were the most powerful group that wanted to see Matthew suffer and Neal definitely needed a cavalry - even if it was the mafia.

Two visits to Internet cafes and a four hour wait later he had his answer or rather two of them.

Mozzie's first message was "The Russians? Are you insane?"

Neal mentally answered that in the affirmative, but kept reading.

The second message read only, "They're in. What's your next move?"

Neal let out a long breath. He had the Russians on his side. Now he needed to come up with an actual next move.
