Numb3rs Fic: A Good Look In The Mirror (The Live to Fight Another Day Remix)
Written for numb3rs100 2011 Drabble Remixathon - Remix of A Good Look In The Mirror by swingandswirl/Challenge #45 - Nature

Title: A Good Look In The Mirror (The Live to Fight Another Day Remix)
Pairing/Characters: Ian
Rating: PG13
Word Count: 300
Spoilers: Sniper Zero, Toxin
Summary: Ian examines a lifetime of scars on his body in a full length mirror
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

Thin knife scar on his neck, the time a Talib soldier just missed his jugular.

Not even a split second's notice; he just felt the blade at his neck and reacted with lethal hand to hand combat skills. It wasn't until the soldier lay in a lifeless heap at his feet that Ian noticed his neck was bleeding.

Bullet scar inches from his heart, the time he was in Bosnia and his vest failed.

Staring up at the medics he remembered wondering before fading away that if they called these bullets 'copkillers' back home, what were they called in war? It took him his last conscious moment to figure out the answer. They called them casualties.

A mess of scars on his right thigh from the motorcycle accident that killed his fiancee.

The last thing they expected on a casual day ride in the mountains was a landslide. There was no way they could have known what lay behind the blind curve in the road, but Ian will always wonder - between remembering her long hair framing her face in the breeze as the wind carried away her laughter - what if they'd taken a different route that day.

The mirror doesn't judge, but neither does Ian. His scars aren't imperfections or failures, they're a part of him as much as his memories are. From facing down a cougar to biting his lip against his father's abuse, from Iraq to Afghanistan, they've made him the man he is today.

A sniper's expert fingers trace over each scar: big, small, ugly, unseen by any eyes save his own.

They're reminders that he lived to fight another day.

Moment of reverie over, Ian puts on his dress uniform and heads out to pay tribute to a fallen comrade who can't make the same claim.

Confession
This fic was written for the 2011 Drabble Remixathon at numb3rs100. The original author was swingandswirl whose fic I remixed was A Good Look In The Mirror.

I actually contributed towards the original bunny for this and while I was thrilled with what Tam wrote I always wanted more. (Such is the way with good fic, n'est-ce pas?) ;-) So when I went looking for fic of hers to remix (a tough choice) I immediately saw the italicized parts in between Tam's own lines of fic. It seemed an unusual but perfect way to remix: keep the great parts of the fic and add more insight from inside Ian's head. I still like hers better, but I enjoyed playing in her sandbox for a while. :-)

Hope you like the remix Tam, and thanks for all your lovely fic at N100 over the years!

Thanks,

Emma DeMarais

I guess I must have missed Tam's original story because when I followed the link, I didn't recall it at all.

While reading it, I wanted to know more too, especially about the motorcycle accident. And... you delivered :)

This was... these little snapshots of the life of a character that I just... really love, were wonderful to read.

Thanks much, Em :)

I really like this fic (both the original, since I didn't read it 'cause I'm new here and this one)!

I like the way you've captured Ian Edgerton - he's definitely a fighter and survivor.

It took him his last conscious moment to figure out the answer. They called them casualties.

*stabs to the heart* Ouch. Such a good line there.

Loved the different take on this at the end, Ian paying tribute to someone who won't have the chance to see their scars as reminders of life. Very well done.

Oh this is beautifully done and such a perfect portrait of Ian; body and mind.
