It didn't feel like a Saturday, but Don guessed it must be even without a calendar nearby.

Jake had come by to give Robin some time with her new granddaughter. Don could hear them from the master bedroom: Robin cooing over baby Angie's trademark Eppes curls and Jake's wife Ellie gushing over the tiny frilly dresses she'd already bought for the upcoming holidays.

Whooping noises in the distance told him that Noah and his younger brother Sean had made their way to the backyard to play.

Don closed his eyes for a brief rest before it was his turn to visit and when he opened them Jake was sitting on the edge of his bed.

"Hey, Pop. How are you feeling?"

"Rounding third base and heading home," Don joshed. It had been his standard answer since his doctor put him in hospice care. They'd argued about further treatment, but ninety-two was a good long life and Don wanted to go out peacefully at home with his family around him.

"Mom says Charlie and his clan are coming home early for the holidays this year."

"He's just using me as an excuse to duck out of teaching another graduate seminar," Don teased. "You know what a dynamo he is, only being in his eighties."

They shared a familiar chuckle and as always Don marveled at how much his son looked and sounded like him.

"You coming out to the living room?" Jake laid a hand on his father's frail and wrinkled arm. "Angie and Ellie would love to see you."

"In a little while," Don told him, patting Jake's hand weakly. "But first, let me rest a bit."

He closed his eyes as the bed creaked and felt a soft kiss on his forehead.

"Love you, Pop."

"Love you too, son."

"Rounding third base and heading home." Absolutely perfect statement for Don to make. Love this image of Don as an old man with family, but, (gulp), I agree with ladygray99 - it's paiful at the same time.
