Megan can remember the song that changed her life, that saved her from a rebellious teenage streak.

Her violin lessons had become more of a chore than a joy, with her parents pushing her towards an eventual Julliard audition when the last thing she wanted was to make music a competition.

She'd had it with the gossip and politics of society life, the pettiness of the private school girls she was supposed to be friends with. California called to her with promises of sunshine and freedom. She just needed to save up enough money to get there.

Then her teacher played her a recording of a solo cello piece written by a composer he'd gone to college with. Opus 17: The Laws of Day.

She'd played cello off and on for fun until her parents admonished her for not being serious enough on the violin.

This piece though... It captured her angst and feeling of being lost in a crowd while elevating her above it all to swim in an ethereal cloud of joy she’d believed was always just out of reach.

By the time the final notes died her cheeks were wet with tears.

She took her California savings and bought herself a cello instead.

Now, playing that song, feeling the vibrations through the wood, through the bow, sinking into her skin until she was thrumming along with the melody... She felt truly alive.

In California, a couple with two young children struggled to make ends meet on the husband's city planner salary; having a genius child wasn't cheap. Still they agreed while having a lawyer's salary would have been nice it was more important to teach their children to follow their dreams. And besides, Margaret's latest, Opus 17, showed some promise and might just make a little money.

Oh that was just lovely. I was all warm and fuzzy with the idea of Megan playing cello, and then you took it to a whole new level.

Brava!

That was marvelous. I like the way that their lives intersected without knowing it.
