Written for numb3rs100 Challenge #23 – Connection

Title: Missing Link
Series/Universe: Two Brothers
Pairing/Characters: Don, Charlie
Rating: PG
Word Count: 100
Spoilers: Pilot, UP
Summary: When they're apart Don and Charlie feel like something is missing
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

Don roamed his apartment, as if looking for something.

Charlie wandered through the silent house, the emptiness echoing inside him.

Don found Charlie in the shadows of the backyard hunched over a beer.

"Hey, buddy," he said gently. "What's up?"

"Had a bad day," Charlie muttered darkly.

"Sorry to hear that," Don said, settling down next to his brother. "How about I keep you company?"

He stole the beer from his hand and took a swig

A ghost of a grin broke through the gloom.

They sat passing the beer back and forth, comforted by the connection between them.

This is fic number 23 out of 31 in the Two Brothers Series.

This is one fic where I'm sorry I chose 100 words as my limit for the series. The original versions (and I say plural as it took numerous attempts to capture what I was seeking in 100 words) were much longer and hard to edit down. I wanted to capture this sense of something missing they couldn't figure out wandering around their respective empty residences. I wanted to show that now that they've reconnected there's a void whenever they're apart. They both did fine without each other after they moved away to go to college. They probably missed each other at first, but as they established unique independent adult identities their sibling was not a part of their everyday world. Now they are. Don's not astute enough to form the words 'I miss my brother', but he obeys the magnetic pull to go to the house when he's lonely. Charlie's used to being alone in a crowd, never fitting in, so he doesn't think to reach out to his brother when he's feeling down. But as soon as they are both in the same place it clicks and they both relax, that void filled.

Those of you who like visuals with your fic just imagine the end of Vector only with a darker Charlie and no Alan. That's pretty close to how I see it, only with more shadows and a beer instead of cereal and scotch.

Cereal and scotch?

Blech! What a combo! ;-)

Re: Confession
Did you really think they were eating cereal at the end of Vector? Or am I misunderstanding? I thought they were eating some sort of dessert - like apple crumble or something...

Very nice fic. I like the echoes in it.

Re: Confession
Thanks. I'm pretty sure I heard that TPTB said it was cereal.

Breakfast of Champions! Hehehe

Re: Confession
LOL @ cereal and scotch. :)

I love this one. Their relationship in canon is every bit as complex as the one that shows up in slashfic, and you show that beautifully here. :)

Re: Confession
Uh, thanks?

Why would slash fic be more complex than het or gen or canon?

/is confused/

cereal and scotch

I've heard of beer and juice poured over cereal and scotch in the lunch pail thermos milk, but not cereal and scotch.

Would that be 12 Year Old Single Malt-o-Meal? Hehehe

Simple but evocative.

Thanks. I have (unfortunately) a bit of a rep as a slash author, but I do think I do good gen. Two Brothers was a nice way to focus on that for a change. Like you I love the brother's dynamic and gen is the best way to explore what canon has gotten us to love.

This is one of my favorites as well. It didn't get noticed as much as others, but it meant a lot to me.

First toast, now beer. Very Don!

This is one of my favorites in the series.

Don has this big brother attitude: what's mine is mine don't touch but what's yours I can swipe. /snicker/

I was going for a similar feel to Vector, which I also did in Crickets and to some extent in Whistling, but I can't help liking the brothers like that.
