Don loomed over the man sitting handcuffed to the chair in front of him.

"You're innocent, right?" he spat out. "You didn't do anything? That's what everyone says. Right, David?"

David stood off to the side shaking his head in disbelief. "Everyone," he agreed.

"I know you talked to him," Don hissed. "The question is are you going to tell me what information you passed on to him or are things about to get very ugly here?"

"I didn't talk to him!" the man cried. "Okay, so he cornered me, threatened me! What the hell was I supposed to do? Shoot him?" The man slumped in his chair, despondent. "I don't want to go to jail, but I sure as hell wouldn't risk my life by ratting anyone out. You have to believe me."

"You know what I believe?" Anger flared in Don's eyes as he stared at the broken man, his controlled exterior giving way to the rage beneath as his voice grew louder, his tone biting and cruel. "I believe you'd say anything to save your own skin. I believe whatever loyalties you once had are up for grabs right now, that you'll latch on to whoever you think will pull you out of this mess. But you got yourself into it and you could have tried to get yourself out of it, but you didn't." He stepped away for a moment, turning his back to both David and the man. He paused for the span of a few harsh breaths then finally returned, shaking his head. "This is a waste of time," he muttered. "David?"

Don held out his hand and David put a gun in it.

"No!" the man yelled, straining at his bonds, the cuffs clanging against the metal chair.

Don grabbed the man's chin and pulled his face up to look at him.

"I trusted you! I trusted you with my life, my brother's life, with everything! In all the years I've known you I never thought you would betray me. Never."

"I didn't! Please don't do this," the man pleaded desperately.

"If you'd come to me? Told me what happened? You'd have had a chance. But you didn't. You hid it from me instead." He lowered his face until he was eye to eye even with the man. "I can't have anyone in my organization talking to the cops." He stood back up, put the gun in the man's mouth and cocked it. "Goodbye, Coop."

He pulled the trigger.

Then you'll love Vice, because Vice? It's all about the evil. /grins/

Seriously intrigued here :)

/seriously pleased about that/

OMG!! I'm so pumped for this! Coooop!
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on September 26th, 2007 02:58 am (UTC)
Cool! FWIW I feel bad for killing off Coop in the first scene, but he'll be all over the prequels - once I get to them at least. Hehehe

I think it was very bold to announce the murder of Coop right away, but it's working extraordinarily to generate interest, and I wouldn't have done it any differently. Makes me think of Palahniuk announcing the death of his primary characters within the first chapters of Survivor and Lullaby. Brilliant move. Brava!
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on September 26th, 2007 06:30 am (UTC)
Thank you. /bows/ This is a bold series - one of those 'where no man has gone before' type things to me - in terms of AU, scale and scope. Though Coop is gone his storyline is the main domino that causes the events of both Vice and Virtue to follow.

Are you at all afraid of reactions to the series? I know Irena got dissed pretty badly when it came to her "Looking For Love" series for being so bold and going to unexplored, dark areas.

both Vice and Virtue to follow

I don't know if you mentioned this on the series' main page and I missed it, but I wasn't aware there was going to be "Virtue" (sequel series?). I really have to commend you for taking on such a huge commitment. Again, brava!
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on September 26th, 2007 08:08 am (UTC)
I'm only afraid of one thing: that the series will be ignored.

Controversy is good publicity. I'd rather have people talking about my fic than having it die a quiet death, commented on only by betas who read it all months ago.

If anyone was going to diss me for bold/dark/out there they should have done it for Simon Says. I'm pretty bulletproof. Anyone pissy in the fandom already doesn't like me and this series won't change that so who's left to be worried about?

Virtue is mentioned in the Series post. Vice will be posted in Parts and then Virtue the sequel should also be posted in Parts. Then the prequels will begin starting with the furthest back in time which should be just after the brothers graduate from high school and Don turns 18. That is where my universe splits from canon so the entire Vice Series - as opposed to just the main first fic Vice - covers Don from 18 to pretty much present time. Sin goes beyond, but it follows Megan's life post-Virtue.

So to be clear, Virtue isn't a Series, it's a fic like Vice in the Vice Series. Sin is like Vice - a first fic in a Series of the same name. (All my Series are named after the first/main fic in the Series.) Sin just happens to take place in the Vice universe so they're related, companion Series if you will.

To be honest I have no idea if I'll write all 1000+ pages I've outlined, but I'm sure going to give it a try. I figure any fic I get out is worth it since this universe is - to me at least - quite compelling.

I don't think you will be ignored. There seemed to be a lot of interest when you made the series post, and you've gotten several comments on this prologue. You've got a quality reputation, and people want to follow your work, whether or not they comment.
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on September 26th, 2007 03:46 pm (UTC)
One hopes, but if comments is the only way I can measure? /shrugs/

But yes, so far so good...
andi: Don & Billy actionadmiralandrea on September 26th, 2007 05:59 am (UTC)
Well, I've obviously been living under a rock, 'cause I had no idea what Vice was. I thought you were pimping a new tv show, that's how ignorant I am!

Having said that. Oh noes, I can't believe you killed Coop! :is appalled and intrigued: Talk about your powerful start!
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on September 26th, 2007 06:32 am (UTC)
Readers weren't expected to know in advance really, but I'd hoped my little teasers had perked up people's interest to find out.

It will be clearer tomorrow when Part 1 is released. Then you'll see what the universe is all about.
fredbassettfredbassett on September 26th, 2007 12:59 pm (UTC)
Powerful start! Looking forward to seeing the rest.
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on September 27th, 2007 06:11 pm (UTC)
Excellent! I should be able to be good to my word and post them on Tuesdays as promised. I'll even try to post them earlier in the day. Of course that's not middle of the day for you, but earlier is rarely bad. /grins/

Great start!

Thanks! I like the rewritten beginning much better.

Ooooh! Dark and delicious. I had a feeling a big series was in the making when I saw the ads. The one drawback is that I have to wait a week to read each one! :P Very bright, you are. I can't wait for the next installation.
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on September 27th, 2007 06:15 pm (UTC)
Wait? ;-)

I think 'Dark and delicious' is my favorite comment so far. /smiles happily/

Vice is beyond big. It's beyond massive. I have no adjectives for how vast it is when I imagine the stories I could tell in this universe. Okay, I've seen the Grand Canyon in person so I should have words, but even that left me speechless so I got nada. ;-)
auryn_wrenauryn_wren on September 28th, 2007 12:47 pm (UTC)
My first reaction to this is still: Evil!Don is hot!

Second is : Coop! He killed Coop!

Still as good as I remember. Off to reread part 1 ^_^
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on October 3rd, 2007 05:47 pm (UTC)
Oof! I knew I forgot something on my to do list! I meant to email all the people I'd teased with Vice previously to let them know it was finally coming out. Mea culpa!

There have been some rewrites so I do advocate reading it again. (And when the boys are all fun and evil where's the bad in that? Hehehe)
numberbiscuitnumberbiscuit on January 27th, 2016 07:30 pm (UTC)
WHAT?! IT WAS COOP? What did Coop do? What has Don done?
omg... imma have to read on now...
