Friday, 6/1/07 - Day

Don stripped off the last of his clothing and tossed the garment onto the pile at his feet, accepting the black silk bathrobe David had fetched for him.

"Burn those," he instructed, pointing at his discarded clothes. "And have that mess cleaned up." He cocked his head back towards the blood and brain matter splattered all over the concrete basement floor by the body.

"Yes, Don," David answered automatically.

Don put on the robe and tied it around his waist.

"Good man. Make sure word gets around, will you? That this is what happens if I hear anyone's been talking to the cops – especially that Edgerton."

"Yes, Don."

Don clapped him on the back and headed out the door to go upstairs.

"Hey, where's my brother?" he asked as he left.

"I think he's disciplining Granger," David said, letting a tiny smirk escape.

"God damn it," Don grumbled as he mounted the stairs. "He picked the wrong fucking day to piss me off..."

The mansion that housed Don, his brother and his operation was vast so it took a while to find Charlie.

When Don finally heard noises in a little used study on the second floor, he opened the door.

Charlie had Colby bent over the desk and was fucking him brusquely, his black jeans pushed down and his black shirt unbuttoned and open.

"Colby, you can go now." Don's voice made it clear it wasn't a suggestion.

"Hey!" Charlie complained as Colby quickly pulled up his pants and ran from the room, closing the door behind him. "I wasn't done yet!" He pulled off his condom and tossed it in the trash with a huff.

Don crossed the room and grabbed a handful of Charlie's hair in his fist, yanking it backwards.

"How many times have I told you not to fuck the help? We've got a shitload of prostitutes on the payroll you can play with. Leave the staff alone."

Charlie tilted his neck, baring it to Don as his lips slipped into a wicked grin.

"Someone's in a mood," he taunted. "So are you actually mad or is this just foreplay?"

Don swooped in and licked a stripe up Charlie's neck. Just as his brother gasped in pleasure, he quickly bit down hard at the juncture of his neck and shoulder.

"That'll leave a mark," Don smirked, surveying the results.

"Oh, like that's necessary," Charlie pouted. "You've already scared off every other guy in the organization from even looking at me for more than two seconds. You don't need to fucking brand me as well."

"Maybe I just like it," Don whispered in his ear before nipping sharply at the tender lobe.

He quickly grabbed Charlie and turned him, bending him over the desk so he was in the same position Colby was just in. He shoved Charlie's jeans the rest of the way down and pushed his shirttails aside to expose his bare ass.

Don ran his hand possessively over one ass cheek. "Fuck anyone you want," he growled, "but your ass is mine."

Don came downstairs after showering and dressing to find Charlie slung across his favorite leather club chair in the salon, one leg hanging over the chair arm while his other foot tapped out an unheard beat on the Persian rug.

He'd only bothered to button one button on his shirt after he'd left the study so he still looked like he'd recently been debauched - mussed curls and all.

He was so absorbed in what he was doing on his laptop he didn't notice Don come in.

Don tugged one of the ear buds out of Charlie's ears releasing a stream of loud rap music into the air.

"Doing the laundry?" he asked.

"Shit, Don!" Charlie jumped a little. "Don't fucking do that!"

"Now you see why I have to have a guy on you every time you go out," Don said, glancing at the laptop screen briefly. "You never pay attention."

"A guy? Don't you mean two guys? You think I don't pay attention, but I've known you've had a second guy on me all this month. What's up with that?"

"Well, first he's been on you for more than two months so I rest my case on your powers of observation."

Charlie rolled his eyes. "Whatever," he said petulantly.

"Second, it's just a precaution," Don shrugged as if it wasn't a big deal. "Edgerton is just getting too close for comfort, that's all." He stretched out on the leather couch. "Come show me how much money you funneled through our legitimate businesses last month."

Charlie got up and headed over to sit beside Don on the couch, even walking like he'd been thoroughly fucked.

"I have the figures for last month and year to date numbers by month for comparison. I also found a new shelter and I funneled 100K into it as sort of a test run. If it goes well I'll keep adding to it."

"The Caymans?" Don teased.

"The Caymans are for amateurs," Charlie scoffed, missing Don's humor. "Take a look."

Don reviewed the data on the screen. "Is this supposed to make sense?"

Charlie sighed. "Just trust me on this."

"Don't I have to?" Don teased.

"Yeah, because I know where all the money is."

"And I know where the bodies are buried," Don tossed back, sadness and regret slipping into his tone.

"Touché," Charlie said, heading back to his chair. He stopped short and turned back to Don whose expression implied there was more to that statement than a simple retort. "Shit..." Realization dawned on Charlie's face. "You're not talking about... Not Billy?"

Don nodded solemnly. "Yeah..."

"Fuck..." Charlie sank back down on the couch. "I was sure it would all turn out to be some kind of misunderstanding. There was just no way... I mean, Billy? He's been with us since like the beginning. I liked him. I can't see how he could have turned on us."

"Edgerton must have had something on him, something good enough to put him in jail a long time and that must have freaked him out. So I guess he panicked," Don said, shaking his head.

"I just wish, you know," Charlie said, ducking his head, "that he didn't have to die for that mistake."

"Me too, buddy, but if he had gone to the cops... Especially Ian Edgerton..."

"I know, I know," Charlie interrupted. "But still... Billy... He was one of our own, you know?"

Don ran a hand up Charlie's back and let it rest at the nape of his neck amongst his curls.

"When it comes right down to it the only person I care about protecting is you. Everyone else is expendable. Even Coop..."

Lieutenant Gary Walker saw Ian hovering at his doorway and put up a finger to have him wait as he took a call.

"Understood," he said into the phone. "I'll be there."

He beckoned to Ian to enter as he hung up.

"Detective Edgerton! How's the world of Vice treating you?"

"What can I say?" Ian said, dropping into the seat in front of Gary's desk. "As long as there are human beings the Vice Squad will have plenty to keep us busy."

"Yeah well, human nature... It's a bitch." Gary shook his head in resignation. "So what can Organized Crime do for Vice today?"

"I'm here about the Eppes family. I've got enough to open a case file on them and this really should be a joint op with Organized Crime."

Gary let out a long breath.

"Now, we've been over this more than once. The Eppes brothers are legitimate businessmen. They check out. You can't have anything on them because there isn't anything." He paused and gave Ian a patient look. "Listen, I realize that for some reason the Eppes brothers got under your skin, but my department investigated them thoroughly the first time you went after them and we didn't find a shred of evidence to implicate them in any wrongdoing."

"Well, this time I've got something all right. Something good." Ian leaned forward in his seat. "I've got an informant."

Walker's eyebrows rose. "Oh, really?"

"One of Eppes' trusted lieutenants. I've got sufficient evidence on video to send him away for the next twenty years. I told him it was prison or he could get Witness Protection if he testified."

"I see." Walker steepled his fingers in front of him. "And he went for it?"

"Why wouldn't he?"

Gary shrugged and stood, walking Ian to the door of his office.

"You're absolutely right. This should be a joint op. You let me know when you're going to pick up this - what did you say his name was?"

"Cooper," Ian answered. "Billy Cooper."

"Fine. You tell me when you're bringing in this Cooper fellow. I want to be there for every word he says."

Ian nodded with a satisfied grin. "Thanks."

"Happy to help," Gary said. "Now if you'll excuse me I have an appointment to keep."

Gary drove up to the warehouse and got out of his car, taking in his surroundings as unobtrusively as possible. Convinced he was alone, he headed into one of the buildings.

He'd changed out of his police uniform and into civilian clothes so he felt out of sorts without his shield and sidearm.

Once inside the door he nodded a greeting to the man in the dark suit who gave him more than a perfunctory pat down.

After it was done, the man steered him through an inner door into the main warehouse area.

The air in the warehouse was dank and stale and little light filtered in through the mostly blacked out windows high overhead.

A voice greeted him out of the darkness.

Don stepped out of the shadows and stood a distance away.

"We seem to have a situation... Again..."

Gary fought back the urge to fidget and stood up straighter.

"It won't come to anything. I took care of it last time, I'll take care of it this time."

"It already has come to something," Don said tersely. "Your boy Edgerton got too close to one of my men."

"Cooper won't testify. I'll make sure of it."

"No, Cooper won't testify. That's for sure."

Gary bristled. "What happened?"

"Well, imagine the pressure a man would be under," Don mused. "His options are to spend his remaining good years in prison or rat out his family. Enough to make a man want to eat his gun."

Gary let his head hang down. "No one was supposed to die," he muttered. "Where will we find the body?" he asked.

"What body?" Don tossed back innocently. "We were only talking in hypotheticals here."

"Of course."

"Just wanted to make sure you understand the position my family is in."

"Good," Don said nodding.

"Is there anything else?" Gary asked.

"Just my condolences on the death of your Great Aunt Walker."

Gary chortled. "Quite the idea to hide a payout as an inheritance. I take it you found a woman who was about to die anyway?"

"She had a comfortable end in a nice hospice, just what she wanted. Finding her will and a mattress stuffed with large bills after she passed... Well, that was just your good fortune."

"Pretty clever..."

"Helps to have a genius in the family."

"I'm sure." Gary caught himself fidgeting and stilled himself. "For what it's worth," he offered, "Edgerton did come to me to make this a joint op with Organized Crime so I had control over the case."

"Not enough control apparently," Don said coolly. "I pay you to prevent police involvement in my business, not do damage control after the fact." He turned and disappeared into the shadows. "Get Edgerton off my back, Gary. Or it won't just be your Great Aunt leaving a will behind..."

Yay it's up! :shakes pompoms:

I love Charlie in this part. :) He's such a troublemaker, sleeping with the staff. And Possessive!Don is always delicious.

I think you did a great job capturing Walker's voice too. :bounces.: Does this mean I have to wait 'til next Tuesday now? :bounces more:
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on September 27th, 2007 08:43 am (UTC)
ROFL! You crack me up my dear. You've already read all this and you're still bouncing over it? That's dedication. I knew there had to be a reason I adored you so. /smooches/

FWIW, Walker's voice is surprisingly tough. Will Patton gave him this odd way of talking, kind of Texas down home simpleton mixed with savvy law enforcement expert. I found it hard to capture, but if you think I pulled him off I'm inordinately pleased.

In other words, chuffed. Hehehe

Oh, this is going to be interesting! Don and Edgerton on opposite sides! Mind you, I'm still recovering from you killing off Coop...

*hmmm... I need an evil!Don icon*
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on September 27th, 2007 08:59 am (UTC)
You know, someone made icons for my Obshina Series before. I wonder if I can get someone to make icons for Vice? I mean mine's really basic, but I like the idea of Evil!Don!icons and Evil!Charlie!icons and maybe even Morally!Gray!Ian!icons. ;-)

I hope you don't recover too quickly from me killing off Coop. The Series is supposed to keep you on the edge of your seat. Well, as much as I can only posting weekly. /grins/
fredbassettfredbassett on September 27th, 2007 11:39 am (UTC)
Oh hell, I'd missread the info and thought this was going to be a daily post! How am I going to wait a while week for the next episode? Bugger. Loving this already, especially with Don and Edgerton on opposite sides. Adored Charlie too. He fits the spoily younger brother of crime boss image down to a tee.

Great start to what promises to be a great series!!
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on September 27th, 2007 06:02 pm (UTC)
Sorry! Not daily, no. If it was I'd be out of the ~60 pages I've already written tout de suite and then you guys would be very impatient for me to write the rest. ;-)

I figured I have enough to last weekly for the rest of the year save the holidays, so that gives me time to write the rest of Vice. I'm sure I'll need a break again before Virtue, but who knows. The first ~50 pages of Vice were written in a week so on ne sait jamais. /shrugs/

I hope Charlie's not too stereotypical. I promise the characters become more complex with time. These first two posts which are both technically part of Part 1's half-day (and oops! I forgot to include what day this is! /headdesk/) serve to set the scene and needed to be more extreme to point out the difference between Canon!Don and Charlie and Evil!Don and Charlie.

Here's hoping you like what's to come!

Yes, Gary is totally in Don's pocket, as are other cops - just not anyone in Vice anymore, much to his chagrin.

Some people did get to keep their canon jobs, but for obvious reasons most didn't. ;-)

Ooh, intriguing! I already love how this is developing...

Charlie is his minxy self and Don is his bossy, protective self. And Ian fits the role of Vice Cop perfectly...

Looking forward to more as it comes.

Glad to hear it. Minxy is a good word for Charlie. Much better than sociopath. /winks/

LOL, I love Slutty!Charlie and I absolutely adore possessive!Don. Poor Gary, he really has no chance of getting out of this, especially considering how Ian is like a dog with a bone in his going after the Eppes'.

Do I really have to wait till next week? *pouts like Charlie*
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on October 3rd, 2007 06:03 pm (UTC)
*pouts like Charlie*

LOL! That's perfect!

FWIW, Gary's fate has not been decided yet, although he's likely to make it through Vice just fine. Virtue and Sin? Not so sure. ;-)

Ian will *not* be put off this and his personal vendetta is what drives Vice and Virtue. I can't think of a canon character who'd be more tenacious than him. /grins/

Oh, my GOD! It's EVIL DON and CHARLIE! This is going to be a gloriously wrong thing, and I am ever so much looking forward to it.
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on October 3rd, 2007 06:16 pm (UTC)
gloriously wrong

I couldn't have said it better myself. ;-)

Evil!Don and Evil!Charlie are such great characters for me to write. Even though they're far less evil and more canon-like in their personalities than I originally envisioned, I really enjoy MorallyGray!Charlie and KilltoProtectFamily!Don.
