"Don!"

Don looked up from paying for takeout to see Charlie walking in.

"Hey! What's up?"

"Nothing, just not used to these random encounters. You were gone so many years running into you around town is still a little weird."

"For me too," Don admitted, offering him a bag. "You want to come over and help me eat this?"

"Me and what army?" Charlie chuckled.

"Long night," Don explained. "I'm working a fraud case and that means stacks of spreadsheets."

"I'm good with numbers. I could help."

Don gave Charlie a long hard look.

"Okay. I suppose it can't hurt..."

Confession
This is fic number 29 out of 31 in the Two Brothers Series.

Happy Thanksgiving to those of you who enjoy today's holiday.

This fic marks the beginning of the end of the Two Brothers Series. Most of the fic have been unconnected vignettes showing the slow changes in the brothers' relationship over time in the year prior to the show's pilot. In the beginning there was a lot of grief and rediscovery, then came bonding and now the last three fic in this series - starting with this one - are designed to transition out of the two men as brothers theme and into them being brothers who work together.

I haven't watched the pilot in ages, but I seem to remember that Charlie mentioned helping Don in the past with I think a fraud case, so this hearkens back to that conversation. It makes sense that Don would accept Charlie's help in a harmless white collar crime that deals with accounting - even if he does have to think about it a moment - since he probably feels like a) there's no danger of anything happening to Charlie and b) it's not disturbing like the violent crime cases he has the rest of the time. (And since when are they a special violent crime task squad as Gary Walker mentions?) Don in the pilot is resistant to Charlie getting involved in such an ugly case - and can you blame him? But our Charlie is nothing if not stubborn and since Don set a precedent with this fraud case, it follows that Charlie - who wants to be with Don and earn his approval - is willing to deal with all this horrible ugliness in order to help his brother make the world a safer place.

Yes. Alan and Margaret raised these boys right.

FWIW, I don't like the title of this fic. I just had no ideas for alternatives. I did like the idea that Charlie running into Don at that restaurant which led to his first case with him wasn't by accident. It would be nice if fate, which took their mother away, found a way to bring them closer together even if it involved egg rolls. ;-)

Thanks,

Emma DeMarais

I'm good with numbers.

Is this the understatement of the millennium...? *grins*

And little does Don know what he's starting here...

Nice! I like the idea of how they came to work together for the first time. And there's also the scene in Uncertainty Principle, when they're looking at what the bad guys hacked at the banks and Charlie recognises the Federal Reserve numbers, Don says that Charlie helps them out on fraud cases "all the time".

on tv.com there is a clip from tonight's episode that makes this snippet come alive from then to now on how the brother's relationship have changed.
