Numb3rs Fic: Without Warning
Written for numb3rs100 Challenge #138 – Reunion

Title: Without Warning
Pairing/Characters: Don, Charlie
Rating: PG13
Word Count: 200
Spoilers: None
Summary: Charlie never saw it coming but then neither did Don
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

The SUV came to a screeching halt and Don bolted out of it, running up to the portable quarantine unit just as Charlie rushed up to the other side of the clear plastic barrier.

"Don!" Charlie's fingers curled anxiously against the wall between them. "I inhaled some powder..."

"You're going to be okay, buddy," Don assured him, using his best big brother voice. "I'll make sure of it."

"What if it's..."

"You're going to be fine!"

Tears welled up in Charlie's eyes and his voice cracked as he spoke. "I... I'm scared."

Don's hands trembled as he placed them on the plastic, matching each of his hands to Charlie's, palm to palm with only the barrier between them. Their eyes met and Don forced an encouraging smile, the strain of hiding how terrified he was clear in the tense lines of his face.

"Don't worry. You'll be back at the house with Dad and I in no time."

Charlie let out a cough and his eyes widened in panic. As Don watched, helpless, an uncontrolled bark of a cough erupted out of him and two hazmat-suited doctors quickly spirited him away.

Tiny red specks of blood dotted the plastic.

Treasure your loved ones - even those with whom you have conflicts - because you never know when you might lose them. Believe me, I know.

The best gift to give this holiday season is love. Forgiveness runs a close second.

In case you missed the memo a) I'm evil and b) the warm fuzzy snowy cabin fic was yesterday. Please go read Flurries for your holiday porn sweetness needs.

I confess the fic I had originally planned for this prompt was also an extremely sad tearjerker. I eschewed it thinking it cruel to inflict that on readers during such a festive time, but then the muse gave me this instead. I cave. She wins. You get your love your friends and family while you can PSA.

Here's hoping no one reads this until Boxing Day...

Re: Confession
Don't know what it says about me, but I loved it. :) Angst is always good. Anytime, anyplace.
