Written for yuletide 2007

Title: The Importance of Popcorn
Pairing/Characters: Penelope, Derek
Rating: PG
Spoilers: None
Summary: Derek and Penelope enjoy a night in watching a movie for which popcorn is mandatory
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

Other comments are housed at Yuletide.

"Slide that sexy body over a bit, mama. There's room for two on that couch."

"Maybe me and my popcorn," Penelope teased, popping a kernel in her mouth. She moved over regardless and Derek settled down beside her, remote in one hand as the other arm went around the back of the couch in invitation.

Penelope shifted to snuggle beside him and he pressed a kiss into her pale curls as he wrapped his arm around her shoulder.

"So what DVD did you put in first?" Derek asked. "Should I brace myself for a chick flick?"

"Art film?"

"The Princess Bride?"

Penelope just stared at him. "Why would you ever guess The Princess Bride?"

Derek shrugged. "Who doesn't like The Princess Bride?"

Penelope paused for a second to ponder that then went back to eating her popcorn.

"You've got a point there, handsome."

"Please tell me it's not something full of criminals," Derek groaned. "We get enough of that at work."

"Nope. Here's a clue." She held out the popcorn bowl and Derek took a handful and popped some in his mouth.

"Popcorn's my clue?"

"Popcorn is mandatory for certain kinds of movies, ergo popcorn means..."

"Big Hollywood blockbuster?"

"Close enough, babycakes. Press play."

"Okay, let's see what we've got." Derek pressed the play button and the DVD started from where Penelope had paused it while he was in the kitchen making the popcorn. "We've got an FBI warning."

"I always like starting there," Penelope said with a little giggle. "I love the irony of the FBI warning FBI employees."

The movie began and Derek let out a howl of laughter as soon as he saw what it was.

"How did I miss guessing Sci Fi?"

"Clearly you were distracted by my beauty," Penelope mocked.

"That or the popcorn," Derek taunted.

"You're the one who said popcorn is important!"

"Yes, but I'm far more important." Penelope pouted.

"That you are, sweet thing. Now pass the bowl. There's no watching Independence Day without popcorn."

Penelope passed the bowl with a satisfied grin.

"Now you're talking..."

This fic was written as a Yuletide Treat for recipient torch as part of the 2007 Yuletide challenge.

The request was to show Morgan and Garcia having fun outside of work - gen or het. I liked leaving it open so shippers could sigh and gen fans could be happy too. They're so playful and flirty in canon it's hard to draw the line between normal behavior and couple behavior.

I confess I kind of ripped myself off in this fic. This is not my first time mixing Morgan, Garcia, popcorn and movies. /hangs head/ My apologies for lack of originality, but I liked the idea of them being cozy at her apartment and a DVD and some popcorn just flowed from that. It was done before I had time to realize why it felt so familiar. It was the final hours of Yuletide and I erred on the side of giving a nice treat that wasn't totally fresh and original over scrapping what actually is a pretty cute little fic.

We'll call it twin fic of different, um, vintages. Hehehe

I had a bit of a hard time picking the movie, but I figured Garcia would pick one they'd both enjoy - her for the geek hero and sci-fi theme, him for the fighter pilots and action sequences and both of them for the good guys conquering over all. Plus not many good sci-fi movies that are also Hollywood blockbusters worthy of their popcorn.

Bonus pun in that The Princess Bride is referenced - it being one of the main movies Mandy Patinkin is known for. ("Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." /loves/) I don't remember where the whole "Who doesn't love The Princess Bride?" quote came about, but it crops up from time to time without a clue to its source. It actually reminds me of Angel saying "Who doesn't love Denzel (Washington)?" /grins/

So torch, thanks for getting me back into the Morgan/Garcia with your prompt! It was a sweet treat for me as well.

Very special thanks to hhertzof for her assistance with this fic.

Re: Confession
I love this. And in my imagination, they would head to bed together after the movie. ;)

Mmm, now to decide. I think I am going to go snuggle with the BF and watch a movie. But should it be TPB or ID?

Re: Confession
Thanks! I like your imagination! It gets along with mine swimmingly if that's what you thought. Hehehe

Awww, this was cute!! And you know I *just* figured out (about two weeks ago) that Inigo Montoya, whom I love, is Mandy Patinkin? It's true, though. Who *doesn't* love the Princess Bride?

I love the way you write dialogue between these two. It's so funny.

<3 Much love. ; )

It's amazing, isn't it? He seems so different, yet it's really him. Inigo is a great role in a great movie, so it's nice to be remembered for those - especially when you're getting old and balding. ;-)

Glad you enjoyed this!

It's one of the few movies I can run across on TV midway through and totally enjoy it from any entry point.

First Reader Invitation
Many read, few are chosen... ;-)

Far fewer receive an engraved invitation.
(Well as engraved as LJ gets. Hehehe)

I've launched my new comm ficfinishing and wanted to ask you personally if you would consider signing up to be a First Reader there.

First Readers aren't betas, don't worry. They're just enthusiastic readers who are willing to read works in progress and help encourage authors to get them done. I appreciated your supportive comments on my fic in the past so it made sense to ask you.

As a First Reader you'd get first looks at fresh fic and inside access to the authors as the fic is being written. You'll get thanked by authors, of course, but I imagine most people who sign up as readers will do it get get more fic for their fandoms.

Read the comm's profile and Welcome page and if you're interested join and watch the comm. Most of the posts are f-locked, including sign ups, so you can't see them unless you're a member.

We're signing people up for Numb3rs and Criminal Minds only this month, but more to come in the future.

P.S. If you want to sign up as an *author* that would be awesome, but I don't want to push since that means a commitment. Maybe just a nudge? /grins/
