Title: Check and Mate
Pairing/Characters: Derek, Spencer, Emily, Penelope
Rating: PG
Spoilers: None
Summary: Spencer has no idea how Penelope beat him at chess
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

"She did? Get out!"

Derek leaned back at his desk, laughing at Spencer.

"I'm still trying to figure out how!"

Spencer sat in his chair, bewildered, as Emily walked up.

"What's going on?" she asked.

"Garcia beat our resident genius here at chess," Derek told her.

"Get out!" Emily stared at both of them.

"That's what I said!" Derek exclaimed, laughing all over again.

"I was about to check," Spencer explained, "and something happened. My opening closed up and suddenly I was the one in check."

"She put the whammy on you?" Derek teased. "Hey! There's my girl!" He waved to Penelope as she walked into the bullpen. "I guess you're the new genius in town, hot stuff. I heard you trounced Reid in chess."

"It was a snap," Penelope gloated. "Like taking candy from a baby."

"I've got to know," Derek said. "How did you do it?"

"Yeah, I was there and I can't even figure it out!" Spencer cried.

Penelope walked over to Spencer and stood close to him, reaching out to straighten his collar. "Spence, didn't you enjoy playing chess with me?" Her finger trailed down the V of his sweater vest before she pulled her hand away. "I thought we had a good time."

"Yeah, a good time," Spencer said, slightly dazed.

Penelope put her hand over Spencer's briefly, giving it a light squeeze.

"We'll have to play again soon. Ciao." She flashed a grin and a quick wave at Derek and Emily as she walked off.

"Oh my god!" Emily gaped. "You totally fell for that!"

"Fell for what?" Spencer asked, perplexed. "What just happened?"

"You, my friend," Derek taunted, "just fell victim to the whammy... Again!"

Every year (I say that like it's old hat, but it's only been two consecutive years so far) for the holidays I post Holiday Gifts for my F-list where anyone on my F-list can make a comment post between Christmas and New Years and get a ficcy present from me in return.

They are normally small things, not worth publishing for real, that I post just in the comments of my 12/25 posting. But this one? This one grew. ;-)

I wrote this for patch_tank, one of my fellow Morgan/Garcia fans. She wanted a Criminal Minds ficlet and this came out of nowhere. We all know Garcia's world class smart when it comes to computers, but everyone assumes Reid is the chess champion. (He only lost to Gideon ostensibly because Gideon was such a good profiler.) I got a ficlet idea for her to use social engineering - a major tool hackers know how to use - to beat Reid at his own game.

I adore Reid, but as smart as he is and as much as he's *studied* human behavior his practical experience (especially with the fairer sex) is rather lacking. Garcia? Give her a target and she can turn it on enough to reach her goal. Reid is not an unhackable system in her book. ;-)

I confess I've barely played chess in my life, just a handful of games over decades. I probably don't remember the rules about how all the pieces can move even. But when I was a teenager I beat a much older man who used one of those strategies that has a name and all, yet I still beat him. I could totally see through his offense and as soon as I poked a hole in his main thrust, I proceeded to dismantle it and win the game.

See, I needed some social engineering skills back then. He got so pissed off that now I know to at least make it seem hard for me to win so my opponent doesn't feel so bad. /grins/ Ah, the male ego, it can be a fragile thing indeed...

So thanks for the inspiration, Patch!

Re: Confession
Go, Garcia!
Girls rule!

I almost feel bad for poor Reid- he never saw it coming. Hee!

We should play chess sometime.
I used to play it a lot as a kid- haven't in years, though. Now that I think about it- I just realized I never played it against a male...

Re: Confession
Hey, it's my fic! *dances in celebration* Thankyou so much Em, I lovelovelove it!
I adore Reid too, but he really is a socially awkward dork, isn't he? I love that Garcia outsmarted him simply by being her lusciously sexy self, she wins at life (as do you, for spoiling me with awesome fic!).

And you are more than welcome for the inspiration, let me know if you ever need me to beg for fic again!

*hug* :D

Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on January 11th, 2008 10:06 pm (UTC)
I've got more in progress, including a super long case fic. These two were just what I had for now.

I take it you've read my entire back catalog? If not it's all tagged and memoried so you don't have to slog through my other fandoms at all.
Angela's Ribbonsthought_ribbons on January 11th, 2008 10:34 pm (UTC)

I'm open to it, should the muse want it.

For now I'm trying to buckle down and write my big huge case fic story. Gah! So many scenes! /is cowed/

That was so adorable :) Spencer souldn't feel bad though, Garcia's someone who can put the whammy on anyone (myself included lol) The reactions from Emily and Derek was the funniest part, Derek being so proud of her lol
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on January 11th, 2008 11:03 pm (UTC)

That's why I figured the bewildered aftermath would be more fun to read than the actual chess game. Morgan and Emily just make it all possible in this story. Hehehe

I totally loved this! Poor Reid, beaten by the power of such a woman!!!
Garcia just rocks! And I agree, she could whammy anyone!
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on January 12th, 2008 12:53 am (UTC)
Thanks! She totally rocks. She might have trouble putting the whammy on Hotch, but I bet given the right circumstances she could suck Morgan in without him catching on right away. Hehehe

"Fell for what?" Spencer asked, perplexed. "What just happened?"

Reid, Reid, Reid...tsk tsk Reid. Gotta watch out for that Woman Whammy! We girls play very dirty. xD

Haha, that was cute. I enjoyed it very much.

So how funny do you think it would be if Garcia tried that on, say, Hotch? =D (Maybe she's got magical powers!)
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on January 12th, 2008 12:55 am (UTC)
LOL! Hotch might just be whammy proof. He's so somber I think he's immune to the Garcias of the world. Or really, any sort of fun. /grins/

Oh wait, Garcia did manage to make him smile at least once. I thought his face might crack from disuse, but I liked it. (Hard to believe TG was once the lead in a SITCOM!)

Reid? OMG Easy target. ;-)
melissima: Garcia Laughsmelissima on January 12th, 2008 04:41 am (UTC)
He was the straight man. I could do that job.

But yes, Garcia is the definition of fun. It's one of the main things I love about her (along with her geek cred and offbeat sensuality.) But you knew that.

I am ashamed to admit that I'm no longer a chess player because I don't enjoy the competitive aspect of the game at all. But the intellectual challenge? The puzzle making and solving? :sigh.: so fantastic.

I love this fic and the fact that it seems like everyone has faced Garcia's Whammy at some point. You write her like no one else and I hope you never stop.
