Numb3rs Fic: Novice
Written for numb3rs100 Challenge January 2008 Rewind – Room Key, Reservations, Secret, Encounter

Title: Novice
Pairing/Characters: Charlie, Margaret, OMC, OFC
Rating: PG
Word Count: 400
Spoilers: None
Summary: Charlie is nervous about his first assignment with the NSA
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

027. Room Key

They'd told him in D.C. he'd be contacted.

They didn't say how or when, just that he needed to respond without question.

The room key somehow materialized in his jacket pocket; he found it just two hours before the meet.

He was afraid to look up directions to the hotel on his laptop, not wanting to leave any trace, so he turned off his car's GPS and navigated there using an old paper map.

He wondered if he was supposed to knock, turning the card key over in his hand nervously.

He took a deep breath.

He unlocked the door.

067. Reservations

The NSA agent removed the thumb drive from the laptop he'd used to brief Charlie on and handed it to him.

Charlie stared at the tiny drive in his palm.

"I have reservations about accepting this assignment. I don't think..."

"Dr. Eppes, this isn't a request."

"I'm a private citizen," Charlie said defiantly. "You can't make me do anything."

The agent closed up his case and headed for the door.

"If you don't do the work think about how many will die."

"That's not fair!" Charlie cried.

The agent put on his dark sunglasses.

"I never said it would be."

030. Secret

"Hey, Professor Eppes! What are you working on?"

"Nothing!"

Charlie slammed his laptop shut as a grad student flounced into his office.

"Great! About my thesis..."

"Ah, I need to be somewhere," he stammered, shoving his laptop in his bag. "Can you come back during office hours?"

The girl looked confused. "These are office hours."

Charlie faltered, caught off guard. "Yeah, I meant office hours another day. Today, they're canceled."

He rushed home, the burden of the secrets he carried making him seek haven.

"What's wrong, hon?" his mother asked.

"Nothing!"

He'd kept secrets before. He could keep this one.

029. Encounter

"You have the equations?"

Charlie pulled out the drive, but didn't surrender it to the agent. This encounter was critical. He had to stand firm.

"I do, but I have some conditions for my future work with the NSA."

"I have a gun," the agent said sternly.

"And I 'm the only one with the passcode to the encrypted files," Charlie responded. "I have a world-class mind. Only a handful of people can do what I do. You need me."

The agent stared him down.

Charlie didn't waver.

The agent pulled up a chair.

"Go ahead, Dr. Eppes. I'm listening..."

Confession
A fresh take on the Rewind prompts, IMHO. And who doesn't like Charlie working with the NSA? I'm using it in another series, but I like it so much I decided to pinch it for this series too.

I like this enough that I'm tempted to write at least four more using the February Rewind prompts. (It's good to be co-mod and know this stuff in advance. /grins/)

Let's just hope this title is not prophetic. I mean Novice = No + Vice. And I *really* need more Vice right now. /gulp/

FWIW, I'm not sure when Charlie would have started working with the NSA, but I'm assuming it's after he started working at Cal Sci, but before Amita became his grad student. That makes it over five years in canon so he'd be in his mid-20s or so - still young and inexperienced enough to have trouble standing up for himself when it comes to the government's intimidation.

But he's an Eppes, so he does it anyway. ;-)

Very special thanks to beta melissima for her assistance with this fic.

Thanks,

Emma DeMarais

Re: Confession
hmmm?

SO what the deal that Chuck made?

Very interesting progression from scared shitless to still scared shitless but with a back bone : )

Re: Confession
Well, I don't want to say too much, but I'd imagine he wanted right of refusal without being terrorized or guilted into the work to start.

It may not seem like much of a progression, but it's an important one. ;-)

AMEN! That would seriously piss me off.

Poor Charlie, so worried about giving away national secrets. *pets him* Good on him for standing up for himself!

Re: Confession
/♥s the thunk/

Yeah, I can see the U.S. Government as bullies easily and young 20 something Charlie being initially cowed. But he's an *Eppes* - made of stronger stuff.

Still, it's unsettling to be entrusted with data you know people *want*. It's made me nervous in the past and I don't even have a security clearance!

Thanks for reading!

Re: Confession
This was fun. And I do like how Charlie progressed to standing up for himself and actually 'demanding' something from the NSA Agent at the end.

<3 it.

No + Vice = Funny

Tuesday = Vice Update and more SexyVice!Don. Woot! And more Kim/Don Angst. =) Sigh... I love that world so much; so much that I find myself playing it! That's a sign of a lasting piece. And your genius for creating it.

Re: Confession
Hmm.. This is really weird, and I'm sorry to post a double comment. It appears that LJ has put my comment up under someone else's. Just wanted to let you know, I so did not do that.

=)

Re: Confession
Gah! /panics/

I'm still like a scene short for Vice tomorrow. I pray it shows up in time. MEEP!

/kicks LJ/ I never got an email on this post or the one following. /makes shifty eyes at the Russians/ Hehehe

I've wondered if it would be interesting to open up Vice to other authors - not to contribute to the universe, but to make their own riffs on it. I am signed up to a Remix comm, but I think I excluded Vice from my offerings. It's been so long I don't recall.

I love that you think in my verse though. That's immensely rewarding, as are your compliments. Thank you. /hand to chest, bows/

Re: Confession
Yeah. LJ can be a bitch sometimes... Or so I've come to notice. *Gives LJ the shifty eyes and stern gaze* We'll see if that works. :P

I think it would be cool if you opened Vice up. It's a really creative universe that you have crafted.

*Bows the the Creator*

Hmm. Missing scene? I suppose as long as you hit the post button by 11:59 pm on Tuesday, you're good. Hehe. =)

Re: Confession
Well, I've been known to post fic at 2:30AM or so and backdate it to the previous day. /blushes/

I set the damn rule of a maximum of one post per day so I have to live with it.

Since opening up a universe isn't something one does every day I'm not even sure how I'd do it. I guess a bit in the Confession. If someone's not reading them they're clearly not that into Vice.

/blushes at your bow/

It's just fic... Just really freaking LONG COMPLEX OMG MY HEAD HURTS fic, but it's fic. ;-)

I don't think you understand much about the NSA and how it works - pretty common in fanfic - you should check out their website. Despite the ep of the show, for instance, there aren't a whole lot of guns on anyone but the building security staff. Charlie would be more likely to receive his assignment from someone wearing a palm pilot.
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on February 4th, 2008 07:51 pm (UTC)
I don't think you understand much about *fanfic* and how it works.

We don't deal in reality. Reality is *boring*. TV does not deal in reality (not even so called reality TV) for the same reason.

Go watch the Janus List again. Can you really tell me this fic is OTT in comparison?

It's a cloak and dagger tale, designed to parlay stereotypes into tension. It's not intended to be how a mathematician really works with the NSA. It's meant to *entertain*.

EEEEEEEEE I this fic so much. Charlie with a backbone is a rock-solid kink for me, and to watch him develop it like that? awesome.

He was afraid to look up directions to the hotel on his laptop, not wanting to leave any trace, so he turned off his car's GPS and navigated there using an old paper map.

showing his wily ways already! :D

"And I 'm the only one with the passcode to the encrypted files," Charlie responded. "I have a world-class mind. Only a handful of people can do what I do. You need me."

PWNS! \o/

I hope there's more of this. It's a lot of fun, and different from so much of what gets written for n3.
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on February 4th, 2008 07:54 pm (UTC)
But wait! There's MORE!

Well, okay. Maybe On U.S. Soil isn't exactly a sequel, but it's akin to this fic which to me is enough.

I never really thought about this aspect of Charlie, but if you like it I'll keep it in mind for the future. :-)

Ooh, me likey! Definitely a cool take on the prompts and I like how Charlie is scared, but determined to stand up for himself anyway.
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on February 4th, 2008 07:55 pm (UTC)
Thanks! If you liked this keep an eye out for On U.S. Soil, coming soon.
fredbassettfredbassett on February 4th, 2008 07:49 pm (UTC)
Great series. I love the way Charlie gets tougher. He's sexy when he's tough!
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on February 4th, 2008 07:56 pm (UTC)
Come on! Hard to think of a time Charlie's *not* sexy to his fans, isn't it? ;-)

Keep an eye out for On U.S. Soil, which is in a similar vein.

Thanks!
fredbassettfredbassett on February 4th, 2008 08:03 pm (UTC)
True :)

Cool, thanks for the rec.

Rewind Prompts
This was a nice twist on the Rewind Prompts. I liked that since it was inventive. Good to see Charlie stick up for himself at the end as well. I hope that doesn’t come back to haunt him later on.
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on February 5th, 2008 07:38 am (UTC)
Re: Rewind Prompts
Trying to give me ideas? /winks/

If so you might be a tad late. I already wrote February's Rewinds kind of in this universe. /grins/

I do like the idea of repercussions though. /files it away/ Thanks for the bunny!

Glad you enjoyed the fic!
CeriseRevecerisereve on February 6th, 2008 05:50 am (UTC)
Re: Rewind Prompts
You don't need bunnies. They breed in your brain all by themselves. No assistance needed. =)
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on February 7th, 2008 03:10 am (UTC)
Re: Rewind Prompts
To be sure! I slaughter more bunnies in my head per day than most authors write in a month. /grins/

I do still enjoy a good one when it pops up though. I'm not so vain as to think I'm the only one with good ideas.

(I may *act* that way at times though. /is hopelessly vain/)

Hehehe
CeriseRevecerisereve on February 7th, 2008 06:50 am (UTC)
Re: Rewind Prompts
No! You aren’t allowed to slaughter the cute, little, bounding bunnies. They are too, well, cute and little. =) I may not get many of them, but when they pounce…they pounce hard.

I'm glad you pointed me to this tale of yours, Emma. I really love stories that display Charlie's strength. Eppeses are no pushovers. :D
