Title: Can't Go Home (Sequel to Mind Is Made Up)
Series/Universe: Not the Only One
Pairing/Characters: Charlie/Colby, Don, Larry
Rating: PG13
Spoilers: Judgment Call, Dark Matter, Breaking Point
Summary: Charlie has to spend a second night in the hospital
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

Colby shouldered his bag as he got off the elevator and caught sight of Don leaving Charlie's room, scrubbing his face with his hands and looking totally worn out.

"Don... Everything all right?"

Don looked up and nodded. "Yeah, no more seizures, though I might have one if I go any longer without sleep."

"You only got about two and a half hours," Colby said, frowning sympathetically. "That's got to hurt."

Don rubbed the back of his neck. "At least he seems fine now. The doctor said he'd let him go home in the morning if he can go a full 24 hours without another seizure. I guess having two that close together is a bad sign, but he agrees that Charlie being," Don made a face, clearly displeased, "agitated was a factor."

Colby shook his head in dismay. "I still can't believe... Never mind. I don't want to go there."

"Good idea." Don cocked his head down the hall towards where Charlie's door was slightly ajar. "Larry's in there with him right now, but they'll only let someone with a badge stay after visiting hours are over. I appreciate you being willing to take over for me and stay with him."

"Happy to help," Colby told him. "I crashed for a good portion of the afternoon so I'm good for another night shift." He hooked a thumb over his shoulder. "Go on, get some rest. I promise I'll call if there are any problems at all."

Don clapped a hand on Colby's shoulder as he passed. "Thanks. My Dad and I will be here first thing in the morning."

"I'll see you then."

Don headed into the elevator and Colby started down the hallway, pausing just outside the door when he overheard his name.

"Yes, Colby. Why are you surprised?"

Larry's speech was slow, thoughtful. "I suppose because you've never shown any affinity for him in the past. On the contrary, your interactions with him at the house during this case were, shall we say, fairly confrontational? That and it's statistically unlikely you would have many interests in common, given your widely disparate backgrounds... However..." Colby heard a noise of protest he assumed must have come from Charlie. "Given my own unexpected liaison with an FBI agent, I have to allow that basing such an esoteric aspect as connection on mere common interests is intrinsically flawed."

"Can't I just say I like Colby and let it go at that?" Charlie complained.

A little flush went through Colby at the sound of Charlie's words and a delighted grin took up residence on his face, so much so he couldn't seem to make a straight face even when a nurse passed him in the hall and gave him an odd stare.

"You can and clearly you already have," Larry mused. "And as your friend I'm happy that you've found someone else who understands an aspect of the mystery that is your brain, especially since I'm finding this particular one eludes me."

"Colby's been through a lot. He gets it. He gets me, at least when it comes to what I'm going through now."

"That's reassuring. As much as I wish I could stay with you this evening I fear Nurse Ratched will be back as threatened to remove me from the premises in a few minutes. But if you have Colby..."

Another nurse turned down the hall, startling Colby into action. He took the remaining steps to Charlie's door and tapped lightly on it.

"Come in!"

"Just your friendly local FBI agent," he joshed to Charlie on entering. "Hey, Larry."

"Colby." Larry greeted him with a friendly nod. "Charles," he said, turning back to his friend. "I shall leave you in capable hands. Alan said he will phone as soon as you're settled at home tomorrow, so sleep, heal and I will speak to you tomorrow."

"Thanks, Larry."

With another nod to Colby, Larry headed out just as the nurse was glancing in the door. Colby held up his badge and the nurse gestured her understanding and left, closing the door.

"So, Charlie..." Colby reached into the backpack he'd brought with him. "You up for some ass kicking at chess?" He laid a small travel size chess kit on the tray table beside Charlie's hospital bed.

"You're willing to spend part of our evening getting beaten at chess?" Charlie asked, half joking, half incredulous.

"Who said it was my ass that would get kicked?" Colby tossed back playfully. "I've got five generations of military strategy in my family. I think I learned a thing or two about chess along the way."

Charlie's face lit up and he rubbed his hands together. "Excellent! I've always wanted to analyze military inspired offenses against pure theory approaches." He pulled the tray table closer and started setting up the board and pieces. "Okay, this has got to be the tiniest chess set ever!"

"That chess set has been a lot of places with me I could have never taken a real board," Colby said, settling down in a guest chair.

"Well, when it comes to me kicking your ass at chess?" Charlie teased. "Size doesn't matter."

Colby's laugh rang out before he could choke it back, remembering the quiet expected after visiting hours.

"Just for that you can be white," he said kindly. "Though if you try to pull the Ruy-Lopez opening on me..." He trailed off as Charlie promptly moved his king's pawn to e4. A second laugh escaped him and Charlie chuckled, looking smug as he sat back against his pillows.

"You were saying?"

"You seem in a pretty good mood for someone stuck in the hospital for two nights," Colby ventured, moving his king's pawn out to match Charlie's.

Charlie gave him a sanguine smile. "I guess I figured I can't go home, so why not make the best of it, you know? My Dad and I did crossword puzzles after you left this morning, Don and I watched a game on TV this afternoon and Larry and I just had a good talk." He reached out and moved his knight, making Colby laugh all over again.

"Not the knight! Oh, you've got to be kidding me!" He shook his head in amusement as he moved his knight to match Charlie's.

"You seem to be in a good mood too," Charlie said, cocking his head as if examining Colby more closely than normal.

Colby looked up from the chessboard, almost surprised by the realization.

"Yeah, I guess I am."

The Accidents Will Happen lyrics may say 'She says she can't go home without a chaperone', but you can bet it's going to be Colby chaperoning Charlie home in this story...

Three guesses and the last two don't count as to what the next installment is called. Hehehe

FWIW, the reference to Nurse Ratched is from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

I confess to being largely clueless about chess. I'm pretty sure I know how *most* of the pieces move. ;-) I have played a handful of times in my life and lo and behold, despite taking on someone with a supposed military background who knew actual *strategy* I still won. /grins/

Glad to hear it!

Can't promise daily installments anymore, but it's flowing rather nicely so I'm hopeful.

Thanks :)

Who'd have thought that *I* would be the one fulfilling *any* Charlie/Colby needs last year? ROFL

It may have taken me a while to write this pairing, but at least I'm apparently doing a decent job of it now that I am!

That was really great. :D I love their banter and Colby listening in on Charlie and Larry's conversation and then being inexplicably happy. :D

Hi, I'm a mostly-lurker reader, but I decided I really needed to stop lurking and tell you that I'm enjoying this series a lot. I like the bit in this part where Charlie is like "Stop analyzing my feelings, I just like him," though Larry's dialogue is pretty funny.

:-o There's more today! *claps excitedly*

I love the visual of those two playing chess together. *ponders who would win*

And for some reason I'm visualizing after the chess game Charlie getting tired and making Colby cuddle him on the hospital bed *looks hopefully at the muse*

Whoa. Awesome and timely updates, Emma dear!

The chess game was so cute and such a nice way to get them talking. Not that they really need a reason to. :p

Thanks. I do plan more but having done seven installments in about seven weeks I needed a break from it.

I pretty much took the last two months off from ficcing, but I do plan on getting this series going again this summer. I could envision around twenty installments - maybe even more - so there will certainly be more to come.

I'd say Colby's entitled to his good mood after overhearing that bit of Larry and Charlie's conversation :).
