Title: The Spark
Pairing/Characters: Nine, Rose
Rating: PG
Spoilers: Rose
Summary: Rose's first night in the TARDIS
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

Right then, where do I sleep?

That innocuous - yet wholly practical in a very Rose Tyler way - question had sent a jolt through him, but he'd taken care not to show it.

He'd walked her to her suite and showed her the rooms that would be hers for the duration of their time together. He'd not had a companion for a while, yet he'd spruced up this suite just recently, somehow knowing it was time. Being the last of his people left a yoke of loneliness slung around his neck that he'd come to accept as his burden. If there were anyone to tell he'd swear he never noticed it - which would be a lie - but sitting sprawled in a chair as she natters on about how she always said her mum's flat was no bigger than a box and now she's got a bigger flat inside a box, he feels lighter. Her laughter, her joy, her wonder is infectious and it bubbles up in him, expressing itself in an irrepressible grin he can't and won't stifle.

She wears out eventually, like her kind always does, and he sees her off to bed with a blithe promise of more adventure to come tomorrow.

She yawns and tells him she's had plenty for today thank you very much and before she can get to where she's going with whatever thought is flitting through her head she nods off, settling into the pillows like a child, safe and trusting, unafraid of the world - or worlds - outside her walls.

He can't seem to leave.

He sits on the edge of the bed and adjusts an errant strand of blond hair feeling a little spark go through him at the contact.

He'd felt it the first time he'd taken her hand. He'd only done it to prove a point, but the connection forged there had stayed with him.

He'd walked away then, sure he was doing the right thing.

But she'd come back into his life and he knew. Stupid as these silly apes were, there was a reason for his inordinate affection for them. Rose summed up so much of what was good in them: brave bordering on stupid, ripe for adventure, fiercely loyal and bound by some internal moral compass to do what was right, damn the cost.

Unable to resist, he slips his hand in hers, already a familiar feeling.

Even in her sleep her fingers close around his automatically.

They fit.

They belong.

Indulging himself a bit more than he should, he lies down on top of the bed beside her, content to watch her sleep and to hold her hand.

He'll go back to his own bed eventually, cursing it for its emptiness, but for now he has a companion.

More than that, he has what he'd been missing.

The spark of life.

Confession
New fandom!

(Technically two since this decision means I'm going to start writing Torchwood as well.)

To any new readers coming from the DW fandom, welcome! I'm a Fourth Doctor girl from childhood who got sucked into Nine via my F-list and pushed headfirst into Torchwood by my lovely slashwife melissima. I've not seen any Ten yet and I'm holding off for now until I get fully caught up on Torchwood. (I've seen all of Season 1 and none of 2.) I can't imagine anyone being better than Tom Baker or Christopher Eccleston, but I'll see if I can get over my apprehension of David Tennant at least enough to watch the episodes where Jack appears.

I actually wrote The Spark last year as a gift for nina_ds, but never officially published it since I wasn't planning on adding DW to the rather lengthy list of fandoms I've committed to write regularly (okay, not quite regularly, but you get the picture). I had just started to watch Nine and wanted to try to capture a tiny bit of that lovely Nine/Rose chemistry I saw from the start. I had really liked CE in Heroes, but found him hard to fic in that fandom. Thankfully he was far more accessible as The Doctor than as Claude.

I pulled my normal trick when entering a new fandom, which is to avoid dialogue. Normally dialogue is my forte, but getting character voices down for a new fandom is unnerving and makes me quite anxious, so I tend to go for more basic gen without any dialogue to lower the barrier of entry. I do look forward to trying them out in the future, especially with Jack who is delightful on his own but even better in a dynamic with the other two.

To prove I am jumping in with both feet, I added Doctor Who and Torchwood to my ficfinishing comm. If you, or anyone you know, writes either of those fandoms please help spread the word. I'd love to see more fic get done in those fandoms via the comm.

So thank you again to nina_ds and melissima! I hope you - and all the new DW readers /waves/ - enjoy this and all the new DW/TW fic to come...

Thanks,

Emma DeMarais

Re: Confession
Yay! Fly little fic, fly!

I loved this the first time around, and now I love it again. So sweet and tender and just right for Nine and Rose. :) I'm so happy that their fans will get to read it.

Re: Confession
That's rather cute! I don't think Rose would have taken it well had she woken up, but for needy Nine, even she'd make allowances once she'd stopped flipping out. XD

However, your disclaimer's... tl;dr, so I didn't read it all. I promise to read your stuff at my own risk, though. ;)

Re: Confession
Sorry; I apparently hit the wrong button to reply. Meant to just do a reply to entry. I shouldn't be on livejournal at 2 am, apparently.

Re: Confession
LOL I assume most people don't even click on the disclaimer link, so bully for you for even going there at all. /grins/

Like any good disclaimer it's just my way of being able to point out I *did* warn people (plus the legal stuff is de rigueur), but as verbose as I am I can't contain myself to a mere line in a header. Hehehe

I can picture Rose waking up with a start, seeing him there and jumping out of bed with a loud "Wot's going on here?" then calming down with an "All right then" once he explained and apologized. Maybe even a slightly playful "Don't let it happen again" scolding. LOL She really is resilient, that one.

Thanks for giving my fic a go (even if you couldn't wade through the dross of my disclaimer). ;-)

Your disclaimer had me worried, but I trusted the PG rating and plunged right on ahead. Beautiful little scene between Nine and Rose her, just perfect for their dynamic--the sweetness, the tension, the innocence that somehow doesn't strip the relationship of its sexuality. Love it!

(P.S. I do love Ten, never mistake that, but Nine was my introductory Doctor, so he'll always be my favorite. Plus, IMHO, the Nine/Rose dynamic will always be sexier than the Ten/Rose dynamic. We're a noisy minority in fandom.)

Thanks for the reminder. My disclaimer's been up since 2005 and it needed updating. I do want to get people's attention since I tend to write some pretty intense stuff at times and I don't want minors or overly sensitive people to get offended by blanketly reading all the fic. I have hundreds of PG13 and under fic, but the harsher stuff is really harsh at times so it's worth it IMHO. Thanks for giving me a chance though.

Thank you so much! I recently got into a discussion about the Doctors being asexual, but I can see how easy it would be to write Nine/Rose het despite the lack of actual canon to support it.

Which one is the minority - Ten/Rose or Nine/Rose? I'm completely new to the fandom so I have no clue. /hangs head in shame/

I admit it was hard to put aside Tom Baker for CE, but I figure if I wait a little while I can at least try DT without too much prejudice. What can I say, it's hard to put aside affection for one's Doctor for another!

Thanks so much for reading and for your lovely comment.

While I certainly don't mind some harsh stuff in my stories or a little kink in my smut, there are a few lines I just won't cross. I appreciate it when writers are up-front about potential squicks.

New Who has pretty much put paid to the notion of the asexual Time Lord. I mean, not that the Doctor's taken to sleeping his way around time and space, but he flirts like nobody's business, keeps getting snogged (mostly by blondes), and it's even possible to see the Doctor/Rose relationship as becoming sexual by the end of S2 and make it work in canon.

Die-hard Nine/Rose 'shippers are a bit of a minority among New Who fans. Most Doctor/Rose you see will be Ten/Rose, and I do like some of it, but one sure way to draw me in is to promise me some Nine/Rose. For some of us, there's just no substitute.

Oh, lovely. You have Nine's voice down very well.

Thank you. You're very kind to say that. I'm looking forward to enjoying writing Nine dialogue in the future.

*sighs* Oh, Nine.

I loved it. I loved how wistful it was and wrapped up he becomes in her.

And DT as the doctor is fun, I adore him but at heart I am CE girl. There was just this something that he brought to the Doctor.

And welcome to the fandom! The finales will make you cry, both DW and TW.

They owe me for my therapy.
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on May 7th, 2008 04:54 pm (UTC)
Galadriel! Nice to see you back again! It's been ages. So here's yet another fandom we have in common, eh?

I'm glad you liked this, I admit to being a bit nervous, this being such a long-standing fandom and all.

And DT as the doctor is fun, I adore him but at heart I am CE girl. There was just this something that he brought to the Doctor.

Yes, I fear DT will lack the nuance and gravitas of CE, but I have to give him a chance at some point. I mean, I like Jack too much to skip any episode he's in. /grins/

And welcome to the fandom! The finales will make you cry, both DW and TW.

Nine's was very sad indeed - bittersweet even. Torchwood's first season finale was quite satisfying at the end so I'm glad I took the plunge and started watching/writing that too.

Thanks for coming back to read!
Valerie: Pink Rosegaladrielriver on May 7th, 2008 05:19 pm (UTC)
Yes, don't you love it when people on your flist have more than one fandom in common?

I think you captured Nine's angst perfectly, there was just something about him that made me want to coddle and protect him.

And Jack. I must say Jack made it very easy to steal my little fangirl heart. And with Jack, they became my OT3, because seriously? That was just hot.

Just be sure to have a blankie or friend with you when you watch the S2 finales because I bawled like a baby. Even ten minutes after.

And it is never a hardship to come back and read your stories.

Oh I really do like this, and its wonderful to have another Nine/Rose writer out in LJ land. Like others have already said, Nine/Rose shippers/writers are in a minority and as much as I love Ten, Nine/Rose had so much more bubbling under the surface.
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on May 7th, 2008 05:00 pm (UTC)
I haven't seen Ten/Rose yet (but I did finally get introduced to Martha last night via Torchwood) but I can't imagine it being better than Nine/Rose.

I do hope to do more Nine/Rose fic since that's what resonated with me. It might lean more gen than shippy, but to me their relationship kind of transcends sex on screen so it's going to be hard to decide where to draw the line between fic I denote as gen and fic I denote as het. I'm just glad the comm is open to both!

BTW, as a Numb3rs author I ♥ the 3 as E in your username. /grins/

Thanks for reading and commenting!

I love Numb3rs! I completely identify with the social and obsessive difficulties of Charlie. I have Asperger's Syndrome and Charlie seems very aspie, though leaning more towards OCD obviously.

Ten/Rose is good... but its more blatant, more sort of 'married for ages and now best friends' sort of relationship to me. With Nine/Rose there is sooo much more going on there. So much depth to their relationship. Him so damaged and her so naive and outward looking.

Wish that Nine's tenure had lasted longer.

Lovely fic! I'm not much of a Nine/Rose fan (I'm a Ten/Donna gal through and through!), but I really loved this! You really captured Nine in a nutshell, and it's a sweet lovely moment that would probably never end up on screen. Great job for a first fic! ;)

Thank you!

I ♥ CE so Nine's my guy, but I finally folded and started watching Ten. I'm not that into Ten and Rose as a team so I'm looking forward to catching up enough to try out Martha and then Donna.
