Title: Benediction
Pairing/Characters: Jack/Ianto
Rating: PG13
Spoilers: Season 1
Summary: Ianto's reaction to Jack's unexpected return (End of Days Alternate Ending)
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

Gwen had sat with him.

She'd believed in Jack, believed he'd come back from the dead.

He hadn't believed.

His guilt weighed heavy on him, like the burden of hiding Lisa, like the onus of the secrets of Torchwood, like denying his love - his worship - of the one person he knew he could never have.

The faithful lover - albeit unrequited - faithless in his ultimate duty.

It should have been his hand Jack was holding when he emerged reborn, striding into the room like a conquering hero - reclaiming his kingdom wordlessly by his commanding presence alone.

Tosh, in a fit of unselfconscious girlishness, had run to embrace him - unrestrained in her relief at his resurrection.

Ianto's feet had moved him towards Jack of their own accord while his mind was still reeling with disbelief at the sight. Once he arrived he came to his senses somewhat and floundered as to what to do.

He'd betrayed this man, been party to his murder.

Decades of manners kicked in and he offered his hand to shake, some part of his brain deciding propriety was the better part of valor as his heart screamed to throw himself into Jack's arms with even more ardor than even Tosh had done.

As always, Jack knew what to do.

Being enfolded in Jack's arms was like a benediction: acceptance, forgiveness and grace all in one. For too brief seconds time fell away and they fell into a communion based on touch, on memory, on connection.

And then Jack's lips were on his, his mouth covering his own, and this time it was Ianto who was resuscitated. New life poured into him, replacing failures of the past with promises of the future, with hope for a chance... A chance he never thought he had with a man he'd grieved as dead and gone...

Ianto watched in wonder - both numb and aflame at once - as Owen broke down weeping in Jack's arms: a man destroyed and made whole again.

This man had forgiven his Judas.

Clearly Jack had moved beyond the touch of death, beyond mere humanity.

His immortal love, martyred for his faith and risen again, had grazed the heavens and returned with a touch of god inside him.

Ianto had never loved him more than in that moment.

The pre-dawn hours waned, but Ianto would not rest.

He sat gazing down at the man sleeping before him.

Jack's face was unlined by worry or strife, his dreams free and clear of the treachery, pain and devastation he'd endured.

Ianto reached out and brushed his fingertips through the spiky hair he knew so well, letting the foreign and yet familiar feeling soothe him, reassure him.

His Jack lived.

Now it was his turn to take his place by Jack's side.

His vigil was far easier than Gwen's had been.

But Ianto knew he would never let her take his place again.

New fandom!

(Is there an echo in here? /grins/)

After publishing my first Doctor Who fic yesterday I couldn't help but try to get out my first Torchwood today.

I'm partway through Season 2 and so far I'm most into Jack and Ianto and well, Jack/Ianto. I'm not used to slash being canon so it's a bit odd to have to deal with what's been shown on the show, but in this case it gave me the seed of a fic.

The Season 1 finale really gave me a lot to work with and I might revisit it again later. For now I found myself putting myself in Ianto's shoes during that pivotal scene. Technically Owen's been through the most traumatic experience, but Ianto's connection to Jack was the most intense of all of them IMHO.

I confess I think I overdid the religious imagery. I claim lack of sleep and an apparent inability to edit my fic once I've finished a first draft. ;-) I also admit to the same cheat as I did yesterday, avoiding dialogue in a brand new fandom. Mea culpa.

So hello and welcome to any new readers coming from the Torchwood fandom! I hope to have more soon, especially once I finish with the last of the Season 2 episodes.

Shameless self-promotion: I added Doctor Who and Torchwood to my ficfinishing comm. If you, or anyone you know, writes either of those fandoms please help spread the word.

Very special thanks to beta melissima for her assistance with this fic.

Re: Confession
Emma, I have to say, when i saw your post for ficfinishing in a TW comm, I squealed! You have always written some of my favorite Heroes fics, and to see you migrating to TW makes my heart happy!!

Welcome aboard! Its awfully nice here!

This was LOVELY! You captured exactly what I have always thought was missing from that scene. Poor Ianto, it SHOULD have been him holding Jack's hand when he woke up. And you didnt overdo the imagery at all. There isnt enough of it in this fandom.

Yay! So glad you are here!!

Re: Confession
Wow! /is stunned/

Thank you so much! I guess I always felt kind of like a nobody in the Heroes fandom so it's nice to know someone liked my fic there.

Yay as well for you noticing ficfinishing. I feared I would barely get any sign ups in the DW/TW fandoms, but so far I'm thrilled with the response.

TW may be like my 14th fandom, but so far I'm really enjoying it. I have a boatload of bunnies in my head, but I am trying to wait until I finish season 2 before I write too much since I want all the canon I can. (Clearly this fic means I wasn't able to hold out. /grins/)

I'm glad you saw this how I did: Ianto wishing it had been him stalwart by Jack's side. He has a wonderful mix of formality and sentimentality that I adore, that Ianto. I really wish they'd show us more of his life. /is impatient for season 3 already/

Anyway, thank you thank you thank you for the lovely comment and such a warm welcome. I'm chuffed to be writing this fandom and am looking forward to making some new TW friends once I really get rolling with the ficcage.

Oh, and who knows? I might even manage a Heroes fic or two before season 3 starts up for them as well. /grins/

Re: Confession
I JUST found this fic as I was skulking through the Archives. (I was looking for Ianto, but didn't find him...in the hothouse, maybe...)
Anyway - you've no idea how LOVELY it is to find someone else who saw the religious imagery in that episode! The young god dying and reborn three days later, forgiving those who betrayed him, and even Gwen's vigil was reminiscent of the christ story. I'm so glad you validated that for me. I'm NOT just reading into that, am I?
Thank you. So much.

A very good take on that scene and Ianto's thoughts. A real awakening of hope is how I like to read it too.
Welcome to the fandom, (from one who speaks for no-one else but herself here) it's a great place, and friendly IME. Honest of you to own up to your peccadilloes, being human, we've all got'em, so kudos for that too ;) I shalll look forward to your work.

Thank you so much for the gracious welcome! I'm pleased that you're willing to overlook my initial shortcomings and give my fic a second try. I have some nice bunnies bouncing around in my head and I might just let my slashwife (who is responsible for dragging me into Torchwood) help me decide what to write. She's got a better handle on what's been done to death and what might wind up an enjoyable read. ATM I'm considering a post-ep for Adam, exploring mostly how residual emotion caused by the wiped memories might linger and affect the team - mostly poor Ianto - in the days following. Hopefully that sounds good, but I've got more episodes set to watch tonight so who knows what new ideas will come with fresh canon.

So thank you again and I look forward to seeing you back here in the future!

Now! Go PR0N!

I second the motion! *G* I had wondered if you'd gotten into TW/DW when I saw they were the newest fandoms on ficfinishing. YAY! Lovely job on this, Emma. I agree, there was a little too much religious imagery, but I forgive you. *laughs*

Mmm... *swoons*

I miss you, Mistress!

I am scritching the little TW plot bunnies and feeding them monster carrots, so there should be pretty pr0n before too long.

/is all happy/

Not to fear, the porn it is in my head now. Nothing like canon slash to set the dirty mind going. ;-)

I am trying to decide what to write since there are so many delicious options in my head to choose from. Mel and I are going to watch the second season finale soon and once that's done stand back! Apres moi, le deluge! LOL!

FYI I just claimed Torchwood (read Jack/Ianto) at Leda's comm drabble123 which means I committed to writing *20* new fic for the fandom.

And the name of the prompt table I chose: Sex.

The Janto pr0n, it calls to me... Hehehe

Squee! Jack/Ianto! *bounces* Sorry, they're my favourite pairing on Torchwood. I think you captured Ianto beautifully. I can't wait to see what else you write for this fandom.

:sigh: So beautiful, I had goosebumps.

Your Ianto is going to kick himself for a long time! I wonder if Jack will suss out what's bothering him? Hmmm...

That was freakin' beautiful! And this is your first Torchwood fic? You really got Ianto's headspace feelings right! Thank you!

Wow, beautifully done! I love the line about benediction, it fits perfectly!! You really captured Ianto's POV quite well, not bad for a first TW fic ;) Great job!
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on August 28th, 2008 07:43 pm (UTC)
Thank you! I've got a soft spot for Ianto and Jack/Ianto. Canon slash FTW!

A little microfic:

"Sir," Ianto said a little breathlessly as Jack ravished his neck, eyeing the tray of coffee cups. "The coffee is getting cold."

"Let it," Jack muttered, not stopping.

"I didn't mean your coffee," Ianto protested.

Jack moved up to claim his mouth urgently.

"I know."

Great story! I've actually been looking for Ianto's POV from that episode, and this was really good.
