Numb3rs Fic: No Going Back
Written for numb3rs100 Challenge #160 – Contempt

Title: No Going Back
Series/Universe: Sworn Duty
Pairing/Characters: Megan
Rating: PG13
Word Count: 300
Spoilers: Seasons 1-4
Summary: Megan's assignment ends but it follows her back to L.A.
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

She stares into her oatmeal bowl every morning, dark shadows growing beneath her eyes.

She daydreams, imagines strolling back to her desk in L.A., accepting the warm welcomes of her co-workers, her friends...

If I could just go back...

She pulls a few twenty-four hour intensive interrogation shifts - punishment for her reticence.

When they end, the torture continues: she can't sleep.

She lies in her bunk, tormented by what she's done here, wistfully tasting the memory of the bad office coffee Colby makes every morning on her tongue, burned senseless from too much battery acid military sludge.

Her fingers worry at the worn edge of the blanket, restless, as she wonders how screwed up her life is that she's dying for a simple bank robbery to solve.

Just a few more days...

The end of assignment debrief back in D.C. is tedious and the agents are rude, cold. They treat her as if Gitmo tainted her. She answered the call of duty, but it's made her a pariah.

She types up a long email to Larry, pours all her rants into it in a cathartic purge, but then deletes it.

I can't do that to him.

The team barely has time for celebratory donuts on her return, but at least she's safe in her haven where the law is the law and the FBI are the good guys.

Then Don crosses the line.

They clash, they argue, but Don's the boss.

She's split between disbelief that the careless disregard of the law she saw at Gitmo could happen here on her team and a contempt for the actions of a man she once admired.

She thought she'd returned to the one part of the Bureau she could still believe in.

But now she knows there's no going back.

Just made it under the wire! Whew! That was a close one! ;-)

Very special thanks to beta melissima for her assistance with this fic.

I still haven't caught up with the end of S4, so I don't know what has happened, but this made painful reading. Excellent, as ever :)

Hey, Fred! Nice to see you!

I didn't spoil too much I think, but I hope you do see the final episodes as soon as possible. The sweeps! The drama! THE HANDCUFFS! Oh Megan! Oh Charlie! OH NO THEY DIDN'T!

Yeah, can't wait for you to see them... :-)

Don't worry, I'm pretty spoiler immune :)

Sorry I've not been around much. RL problems getting in the way of pleasure, I'm afraid. I need one of your monthly lists so I can work through what I've missed. I'll catch up eventually, I'm sure.

Sorry to hear about RL problems. As you've probably guessed from the dearth of fic on my LJ for the last couple of months I've had plenty of them myself.

There's always a monthly post on the last day of each month - there's just not much on the last one sadly. But hey! Two new fandoms! Not a total waste. LOL

Not that it's any consolation, but I have eight finished fic (and two more that will be done in the next few days) that just need beta/edit/polish in order to get out, so hopefully June won't be quite so barren on my calendar.

There seems to be a lot of it about, problems, I mean. I hope things are improving for you now. More fic from you will be lovely.

Thank you. I'm starting to be a bit sad that the series is only four fic long.
