Numb3rs Fic: Damaged Beyond Repair
Written for numb3rs100 Challenge #161 – Damages

Title: Damaged Beyond Repair
Series/Universe: Sworn Duty
Pairing/Characters: Megan
Rating: PG13
Word Count: 300
Spoilers: Seasons 1-4
Summary: Megan makes a decision about her future
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

The monastery is cool, even midday - the sunlight filtering through the leaves of the trees, the thick stone walls repelling the heat like unwanted chatter in a meditative mind.

I see why Larry likes it here she thinks, trying to let the gentle waterfall of the fountain soothe her.

He may have found his peace here, but she needs to make peace within herself first.

Fountains and trees won't cut it.

Her former thesis advisor practically begs her to return for her Ph.D. when she calls to inquire about it. Working with Charlie has inspired her and she can't help but be tantalized by the allure of the ivory tower - a place so far removed from the real world of the FBI it seems almost mythical.

She starts filling out admission paperwork before she realizes she's signing up to be in Washington when her obligations are still here.

I have to decide.

Somehow it seems like the decision has already been made for her.

Her relationship with the Bureau has been damaged beyond repair.

She just has to take the last step: sever the ties for good.

Don takes the news better than she thought.

Stoic as always, he mostly nods and talks about processing the paperwork.

She starts to leave the conference room and he calls her back.

The five minutes they spend talking - really talking - is the closest she's ever felt to Don.

But it's not enough.

I have to move on.

It's not a big send off, but with Colby and David flanking her in the elevator it's different from when she left for her DoJ assignment.

She's leaving for all the right reasons this time.

Don't get teary... Don't get teary...

She smiles, confident in her decision, and the elevator doors close on her former life.

And so it ends, tying into our final Megan canon. /sniff/

Very special thanks to beta melissima for her assistance with this fic.

Of all the women in Numb3rs, Megan is always the one I liked best. I thought Terry was alright, but I really, relly liked Megan. I can't stand Amita, and I'm not too keen on Liz either.

Beautifully written series, but *sniffles* all the same.

Amazing. You captured her sending off beautifully. And that one line about being the closest ever to Don was so perfect.
