Colby felt like he'd just closed his eyes when the noise rousted him from where he was lying on top of Charlie's guest room bed, drawing him to the window. His heart sank in his chest when he saw the arguing voices belonged to Don and Amita standing in the driveway.

He quickly slipped his shoes back on and after a brief pause to listen at Charlie's closed bedroom door, he headed down the stairs - taking care to make his footfall as silent as his training and experience could manage.

The front door clicked loudly as he opened it and he winced, imagining the sound waking the sleeping man upstairs, but he went on regardless - leaving the door slightly ajar to be quieter. He walked up to stand behind Don who had turned just briefly enough to find out who had come out of the house.

"Amita, if you don't get back in your car so help me I'll pick you up and put you in it." Don's voice was stern, leaving no room for debate.

"You can't make decisions for Charlie!" Amita's hands were on her hips, her expression both indignant and angry. "This is his house. He owns it. And he decides who gets to come and go."

"That's right and he asked you not to come," Colby interjected.

"What?" Don exclaimed, shocked. His expression shifted to understanding after a second. "He called her, didn't he? Even after I took away his phone."

Colby just shrugged. "Hard to stop a genius," was his only excuse. "He called. He broke up with Amita. He told her not to come here or call him."

Don turned back to Amita. "You conveniently neglected to tell me that part," he said icily.

"He's drugged up!" she protested. "He doesn't know what he's saying!"

"Actually he seemed pretty clear to me," Colby offered. "Besides, even if he was drugged you still have no reason to go against his wishes."

"And you have no right to put him in danger of another attack," Don added. He paused, letting out a long breath before softening his approach. "Look, Amita. You're a nice girl. You've helped us out a lot in the past and I appreciate that. But right now the help we need is for you to give Charlie some time and space so he can heal. That's what he needs."

"What he needs," Amita spat out, ignoring Don's olive branch, "is the woman who loves him by his side."

"Your kind of love gave him two seizures," Colby barked out before he could stop himself. "If that's what you call love, no thanks."

"Colby, I've got this." Don put out a hand as a signal to back off. He turned back to Amita, his body still a barrier to her continuing up the front walk. "I know you don't want to hear it, but if Charlie says it's over, it's over."

"I won't believe it until he tells me himself," Amita balked.

"Then listen very carefully..." Both Don's and Colby's heads whipped around at the sound of Charlie's voice coming from the doorway, his hands out to the door jamb to steady himself.

Don automatically put out an arm to bar Amita from heading for him just as Colby rushed to Charlie's side. Charlie moved his arm to allow Colby to enter and stand behind him, leaning subtly against him for support as Colby held himself ready to catch him or shield him - whatever was needed.

"You okay?" Colby asked in a voice low enough only Charlie could hear him.

Rather than answer Charlie just nodded slightly, clearly trying hard to keep his breathing steady. "Listen very carefully," Charlie repeated as Amita struggled against Don's hold. "It's over. Don't come here again. Don't call me."

"Charlie, this is nuts! You can't do this! We need to talk!"

"You're right. We should talk," Charlie agreed, pensive. "But not now. Not soon. And certainly not when you can't control yourself. And what we need to talk about is how we're going to move forward as friends and colleagues. The relationship? It's over. That part's not up for discussion. Period."

"No..." Hot tears ran down her face as she sagged against Don, all the fight leaving her at once.

"Let her come, Don," Charlie said quietly. At Don's incredulous stare he just nodded.

Don led Amita up the walk to the door, vigilant and wary as if he expected her to try something at any second.

"I'm sorry," Charlie told her plainly. "I never meant to hurt you. But this is the way it has to be." He gave her a kiss on the cheek and a weak embrace which she returned, clinging so hard that both Colby and Don had to struggle not to extricate her. It was Charlie who finally removed her arms from around his neck.

"So we'll talk when you feel better?" Amita said hopefully, sniffing away her tears.

"When I feel better," Charlie agreed. "I'm tired now though. You should go."

She nodded, rummaging in her purse for a tissue. "I just wanted to see you. I wanted to make sure you were okay."

Charlie glanced at Colby and then at Don. "I'm in good hands. Don't worry about me."

"I can, um, take some of your classes if you need me to," she offered.

"Larry's in charge of arranging that," Charlie told her. "Just talk to him about it."

"Okay." Her voice, once filled with bluster, was now small and sad.

"Goodbye, Amita." Charlie let a hand glide down her arm then gave her hand a brief squeeze. "Take care of yourself."

"Bye," Amita managed. She turned and headed for her car, fishing more tissue out of her bag as she went.

Don followed, at a respectful distance, and waited at the end of the driveway for her to get in her car and go.

"I really need to lay down," Charlie admitted, leaning more heavily against Colby.

"Let's get you upstairs then." Colby slung an arm around Charlie's shoulder and Charlie in turn put one around Colby's waist as he allowed Colby to help him up the stairs again. "Didn't think I'd be this tired, but I'm still pretty wiped out."

"Give it time," Colby told him. "For now, you can rest. Really rest. No more worries about unwanted visitors."

"Yeah," Charlie said as Colby escorted him to his bed. "That sounds really good." His head sank into the pillow and he closed his eyes only to open them right back up again. "Colby?"

"I know you need to sleep, but..." Charlie looked uncertain for a moment, almost bashful. "Could you stay?" When Colby went to pull up a chair, Charlie continued. "With me? I'd... I'd just like you nearby, is all."

"Sure." Colby moved to the other side of the bed and laid down on top of the covers. "Try to get some sleep, okay?"

"I will," Charlie said, settling down contentedly. "Thanks."

It was dark in the room when Colby next opened his eyes. Charlie was curled in a ball along his side sleeping peacefully. His agent's senses told him he was being watched and when he looked around he saw Don sitting in the chair.

He made to get up, but Don just shook his head, gesturing to him to go back to sleep. With an approving smile from his brother, Colby settled back down next to Charlie and let himself fall back into a dreamless slumber: safe, warm and not alone.

Amita's last gasp...

I couldn't make her a horrible person through and through, so forgive me if I made any of you feel sorry for her. I figured it would be more realistic to make her more self-centered and with blinders on than someone truly abusive to Charlie. It's always sad when people discover they've been staying together more out of habit than love and sadder still when only one of them sees that fact.

/lets out a long sigh/ Well! Now that that's over with I can start to get on with the business of getting Charlie and Colby together. Yes, that will continue on with the glacially slow pace you've come to associate with this series. ;-) So far I don't see porn happening in this series at all – I'm comfortable with it staying PG13 – but kissing? That could happen sooner rather than later, although I've got soul searching, uncertainty and a bit of reflection scheduled before that happens. /grins/

Perhaps I shouldn't spoil, in case any of you Don't Want to Hear It... ;-)

I confess that I've grown so used to these installments being three pages every single time that I've found myself editing them down when they go a line or two into a fourth page. LOL It usually just means curbing my addiction to making new paragraphs just about every freaking sentence, but occasionally a tiny bit of editing – always for the better. It just amuses me how set in my ways I am that I can't allow a fic to be a different length than the rest of its series mates. /shakes head at self/

I liked that you showed Amita's softer side a little...it made her seem more realistic rather than just purely antagonistic. Good job! Looking forward to the next one!
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on July 18th, 2008 10:45 pm (UTC)
Thanks! I couldn't make her just a screeching harpy. A lot of people have a good heart down deep, but just do a sucky job of being thoughtful with others.

Nice job with balancing out Amita. It makes it more real.

I just want to hug Charlie!

I love the amount of fic coming from you!
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on July 20th, 2008 03:22 am (UTC)
Thanks! I'm trying to work through my backlog of finished fic now that I have a little free time. If all goes well I'll publish a fic a day for a total of 30 this month!

I think that was a fairly realistic break up. And I'm good with just smoochies.
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on July 20th, 2008 03:23 am (UTC)
Oh good! I couldn't make her a huge ogre, so this was my shot at making it more realistic. Glad it worked. Thanks!

I just read the series and all i can say is WOW, PLEASE KEEP GOING!!!!

In this chapter my favorite character was actually Don. I love Charlie and Colby the way you wrote them, Amita was balanced, but Don...just in the end when he's sitting there watching Colby and Charlie...

boymommytotwoboymommytotwo on July 8th, 2008 04:09 am (UTC)
wow - you're really enthusiastic. :) teehehe
Art3misXtheazndragon on July 8th, 2008 03:46 pm (UTC)
hehe, yea, when i get addicted to a story (in this case series) I really cant wait for more! *shrugs* dont mean to be pushy, i like to think of it as extremely active encouragement ;D
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on July 20th, 2008 03:29 am (UTC)
Oh trust me, the muse seems to like encouragement. (Just not from me. Me? She ignores. /glares/)
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on July 20th, 2008 03:26 am (UTC)
Wow! /is bowled over/

Thank you so much! I'm really impressed with your enthusiasm.

Never fear, this series shall go on and on and on and /looks around for energizer bunny/ on.

I've taken a brief break to publish other fic I had hanging around, but the next arc - about 4 fic perhaps? - is brewing and hopefully will be written soon.

FWIW I really love Don in this at the end. It was really important to me for him to be positive about this burgeoning relationship. It's important to Charlie too, I'm sure...

Thanks again for your wonderful support of the series!

i bought the realistic break up but that doesn't mean i liked it. i want amita to burn and go. away.

the boys - not alone. continuing to love it, of course. i liked the little squee of don watching colby and charlie sleep. hmmm... big brother = big deal. :)
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on July 20th, 2008 03:29 am (UTC)
Well, I have both Amita fans and Amita haters amongst my readers so at least this way each can latch on to whatever aspect they enjoy more. But if you want Amita eaten by a shark? Talk to sororcula. She's supposedly going to write that crack fic. Hehehe

Don watching Charlie and Colby sleep was love. I was so happy to include that little bit. It makes even me smile. /sigh/

Thanks for reading the series!

As ever a fantastic chapter and very realistic. I personally want Amita to go away so those two handsome men can get together :-D
Loved how Don watched them, very beautiful. Cant wait for more.
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on July 20th, 2008 03:30 am (UTC)
Consider Amita away! /dusts hands off/

Don!watching made me very happy. I'm glad so many others thought it was nice too.

Thanks for reading!

aww I could so feel the emotion poor amita (sigh) okay maybe not so much
im loving these fics
can't wait for more
the ending totally had me
don approving when there isn't anything right now
well at least they got that certain aspect out of the way.
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on July 20th, 2008 03:31 am (UTC)
Yeah, I wanted Don's tacit approval technically before there was anything to approve of, but still. /grins/

If you felt the emotion in this? I did my job. /feels proud/

Thank you!

Amita's a smart girl, just way too invested in Charlie. Glad that Charlie was able to talk to her without a seizure. It was sweet the way Charlie was sleeping against Colby and Don didn't mind. :)
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on July 20th, 2008 03:34 am (UTC)
That's a good way of putting it about Amita. She's not some evil bitchy girlfriend. It's hard to hear that someone you love doesn't want you anymore. She's had blinders on for so long that was an adjustment she just couldn't make right off.

I ♥ the ending so much, with Don and the sleeping and all. /sigh/ It's rare that I really like my own fic, but that bit makes me happy...

Thanks for reading!

Aaaaand relax ::slumps::. That was tense, but not entirely unexpected. I'm glad you handled Amita this way and didn't make her OOC. Yes, she was over-zealous, and probably more in love with the idea of Charlie than with the man himself- hence the arguments, but she's not a bad person. I think finally seeing Charlie face to face, seeing his resolve to end their relationship, was what she needed to realise that it wasn't the drugs talking, or Charlie being coerced. Once she understood that, she went back to being the Amita we know. I hope they can be friends and that she will now accept that it's over.

Loved the way Colby supported Charlie, and I liked that Don didn't seem bothered at finding Colby asleep with Charlie.
