Title: The Words That We Don't Say (Sequel to Never Know)
Series/Universe: Not the Only One
Pairing/Characters: Charlie/Colby
Rating: PG13
Spoilers: Judgment Call, Breaking Point
Summary: Charlie confronts Colby about his recent reticent behavior
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

"I'm just saying they don't have to know!"

Charlie headed straight into the garage from the car with a flustered Colby right behind him.

"We can't lie to Don and your dad about you having a seizure at the hospital!"

"I'm not saying lie!" Charlie protested, coming to a halt in the middle of the room. "I'm just saying we don't mention it!"

"The sin of omission is still a sin," Colby warned. "And you know they're going to find out later and Don - in particular - will be pissed."

Charlie rolled his eyes and headed for a chalkboard, grabbing a nub of chalk. "Don's pissy half the time anyway. I can handle it."

"I'd say you don't have to work with him, but since I'm still on administrative leave you'd just counter that I don't either," Colby said grumpily.

"Ah, logic!" Charlie mused, rolling the chalk between his fingers as he stared at the board in front of him. "It wins out every time." He reached out to the chalky surface to write only to have Colby take hold of his arm and turn him away from the board.

"Doc said rest. That does not include work."

"It's not work, it's my Cognitive Emergence Theory," Charlie countered, trying to turn back to it.

Colby held him firm, hands on both his biceps.

"All math is work, unless you're figuring out how much to tip the delivery guy," he added as an afterthought. "So even though I know you've snuck out here a few times in the last week, today you had a seizure. You should go rest." He paused for a second. "Let me put that another way. If you don't go rest I may be forced to toss you over my shoulder in a fireman's carry and put you in bed forcibly."

Charlie moved in close, raising his mouth to whisper in Colby's ear. Before he even got the words out Colby stiffened, the nearness of Charlie's body to his sending a flush through him so strong it was all he could do to not push Charlie away - and all he could do to not close the scant space between them and make full contact.

"What if I told you carrying me off like that would be stressful - perhaps stressful enough to trigger a seizure?" Charlie said wickedly.

Colby let his head hang down. "Charlie, Charlie, Charlie... You really do play dirty, don't you?"

"In a word? Yes." Charlie took a step back, but found Colby's hands were so tight on his arms he couldn't break the hold. "Uh, Colby?" He glanced down at Colby's hands then back up at Colby's face as if to remind him to let go.

His expressive face - tilted up to Colby's, eyes wide and questioning - was enough to make Colby falter. It would be so easy to just lean down...

His hands came off Charlie's arms abruptly.

"Sorry," he muttered lamely. "Didn't realize I was holding on to you that tightly."

He took a step back, but Charlie stepped forward, not letting him get away.

"Okay, now I know something is going on. As promised, I'm not letting you get away until we talk about this." Colby made gestures of dismissal and backed up again, only to have Charlie follow him. "I keep thinking that I'm making you uncomfortable or something - that I've said or done something to make you not want to be around me anymore."

"No!" Colby responded automatically. "That's not it."

"Then what is?" Charlie asked. "Because it's definitely changed how you act around me."

Colby opened his mouth a few times, failing to assemble enough words to form a sentence.

"Charlie..." he finally pleaded, his expression begging for escape.

"I thought we were getting along well," Charlie said.

"We are!"

"I thought you liked staying at the house."

"I do!" Colby's back hit the wall; he'd backed up as far as he could go.

"I thought we were starting to get to know each other, that we were getting closer, that you liked me."

"I do like you!" Colby protested before he could stop himself.

"Good," Charlie said. "Because I like you too."

Colby finally tried to take control of the conversation. "You know, you really should go lay down..."

"In a bit," Charlie said dismissively. "You know we talk all the time."

"Sure, since I'm staying here," Colby said, floundering.

"But we keep talking around things," Charlie mused. "We're great when we talk. We have a lot of fun, get into interesting conversations... But you're holding something back. It's the words that we don't say that are making me wonder." He stepped in close, demanding Colby's attention with his gaze. "What is it you're not telling me?"

Colby might have studied interrogation and anti-interrogation for years, but in that moment a panic flooded him, a fear that everything he'd been trying so desperately to keep hidden - every emotion - was there on his face for Charlie to read.

When Colby didn't answer after a while Charlie just nodded sagely, eyes never leaving Colby's.

"I get it," Charlie said slowly. "I'm not good with words either. Sometimes you just have to find another way to express what's going on inside."

He placed the flat of his hands on Colby's chest and when he didn't move to dislodge them Charlie slid them up until they went behind Colby's neck.

Paralyzed, and watching almost as if it was happening to someone else, Colby felt Charlie's hands behind his neck, tugging him down as Charlie tilted his head up to meet him.

Charlie's lips parted and his mouth hovered scant millimeters from Colby's for a split second before the space between them vanished and they were kissing - kissing Colby's brain screamed. Charlie's mouth was soft, warm and fit his so perfectly it all seemed effortless, idyllic, right.

And then his brain went offline entirely.

His arms wrapped themselves around Charlie, holding him so tight he was almost lifted from the ground. He returned the kiss so avidly, so completely, that Charlie made a little rumble of surprise in the back of his throat which only spurred Colby on.

His hands roamed over Charlie's back, sank into his hair and cupped his stubbled jaw before they finally parted, both panting quietly and staring at each other.

"Well," Charlie said breathlessly. "I'm glad we got that settled."

"What just happened?" Colby marveled.

"You proved my probability matrix equations correct?" Charlie offered.

"Huh?" Colby blinked, still stunned.

"This..." Charlie said smiling as he stepped back into Colby's arms. "This is what happened."

The kiss this time was slow, thoughtful and with full awareness, and if it got dark outside during neither of them noticed.

I confess this is one of my favorite title lyrics.

Seems a good time to share the actual song/video that inspired this whole series. It's an old video, but kind of cool. See how many fic titles *you* can recognize as he's singing! LOL

Accidents Will Happen by Elvis Costello

I've been trying to find a definitive source for the lyrics but the official site doesn't have them readily available. Grr. For now I'm using this site to go by, although I'm pretty sure there's at least small two errors in that version. Annoying because I'm trying to pull word for word titles so I kind of need word for word. /grumbles/

Oh, BTW there was a kiss in this fic, wasn't there? Hehehe Thanks everyone for your patience in getting to this point. It only took 14 fic. (Slow much? Hehehe) Hope you enjoyed it...

FWIW I find myself amused that after Just Don't Know and Never Know the opening to The Words That We Don't Say is about *not* telling someone something they should know. LOL Oh, my muse can be so amusing...

Re: SQUEE!!!!!
Thank you, Amy! What a lovely comment!

I *love* getting a squee out of people and of all the Charlie/Colby moments in this series so far this was by far the most squeeworthy! (I keep rereading it myself and I'm not even a shipper!) It's probably at least a little unusual for Charlie to be the pursuer in a Charlie/Colby fic, but I kind of like the bashful nervous farmboy and the sly knowing genius. /loffs/

How weird am I, fangirling my own fic? ROFL

Last one in the arc tomorrow! More slashy goodness!

Hee! Yeah, I wanted something a little out of the ordinary. He can certainly be devilish, that imp. Glad you liked it!

Mmm such a lovely visual, bravo! Can't wait for the next part, but I'll be sad when this Series is over :/

Not to worry, I don't think this series is even half over. I think I identified something like 40 potential titles from the song lyrics and as of the 19th fic in the plan I feel like I'm just getting warmed up. /grins/

Last fic in this arc went up /checks clock/ yesterday now, so no waiting!

Why thank you!

Welcome to my LJ, btw. I don't think I've seen you around before, but if you like N3 plenty to read here!

Am loving this series, just caught up. This chapter especially was fab. Loved Colbys hesitancy and Charlies confidence in taking control..lovely last line too.
Look forward to more

Thank you and welcome back!

The last story in this particular arc went up a few hours ago. A new arc is coming, probably in August. I like this universe and plan on keeping it alive as long as I can milk Elvis Costello's Accidents Will Happen for fic titles. /grins/

Good for Charlie!! I'm glad he just blew past Colby's emotional wall. The kiss was a super mixture of sweet and hot. And well worth the wait.

Yay! \o/

I'm glad Charlie didn't let Colby escape. They seemed to be having a lot of fun, so much better than Colby silently angsting over it for the next century (because we know he would if Charlie didn't force the matter *g*).

The kissing was very sweet.
