Numb3rs Fic: A Family Man's Homecoming
Written for numb3rs100 Challenge #169 – Las Vegas

Title: A Family Man's Homecoming
Series/Universe: Not Leaving Las Vegas
Pairing/Characters: Billy/OFC
Rating: PG
Word Count: 300
Spoilers: Man Hunt
Summary: Billy looks forward to coming home after being on the road
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

He knows every detour around the Strip, every back road in the desert that makes up their backyard, so she expects him home by dinner - her road weary road warrior.

June 1st. They have it circled on the 2009 calendar they bought special when Billy promised to retire from Fugitive Recovery. He doesn't have to start at the Vegas field office until July, so they're taking a long vacation first. They're heading out to California, out to the hot but not too hot beach to kick back and relax, visit with old friends and nurse the inevitable sunburns. Damn Billy's fair skin genes.

He hadn't planned on giving up the road before 40, but when he pulls up in the driveway and walks through the front door the two best reasons a man ever had tackle him - as ineffectually as toddlers can take down a trained federal agent - yelling 'Daddy, Daddy!' at the top of their two-year-old lungs.

She gives him a welcoming smirk from over her laptop; she'll get a proper greeting when they're done wrestling on the floor. The twins come first now and while telecommuting lets her work at home, the work still has to get done.

Trey squeals with delight when his father blows raspberries on his belly. Sarah scratches his three-day-old beard with tiny nails, the roughness of the not so sparse anymore wiry gray hairs amusing to her.

They let him up eventually and he bends to kiss his wife - they'll have a proper reunion later after the kids are asleep - before he heads into the kitchen to grab a drink and check the progress of the enchiladas in the oven.

Billy had never considered himself a wife and kids type, but a family man's homecoming suits him just fine.

Ooh, a new pairing I hadn't written yet! /is such a huge pairings whore/ I've done Billy/OMC, but not Billy/OFC. I have a whole backstory for how he met his wife and all including her work history, but no desire to ever write it. Besides, who would care?

I had trouble naming the kids of all things. I picked Trey because I could see Billy being William Cooper Jr. which makes his son William Cooper III. I needed a placeholder name for the girl so I picked Sarah, figuring he wouldn't go with anything too frou or flighty or even flowery. I decided to go look up top Irish baby names and guess what? Sarah was number one. LOL So there it stands. Once again letting coincidence be my collaborator.

I know people don't think of families when they think of Las Vegas, but when I was there looking out across the part of the desert that the city carved out from the desolation I was struck at just how much *housing* there was. Honest to god suburban homes. People live there, people work there, people raise children there. The Strip is not all there is to Vegas and since I have this feeling that Billy would make an excellent desert rat (he seems more a warm weather boy - why I can't say) I thought it would be a reasonable home base for man hunting the western United States.

I confess I used inspiration from the awesome song Birthday by the Sugarcubes when it came to the beard bit. (He knows how many freckles she's got/She scratches his beard) Oh and a certain guy who always goes unnamed even though I like running my fingers through his beard. ;-)

Very special thanks to beta melissima for her assistance with this fic.

Really now. One would think you couldn't forget me so easily. ;-)

/blows kisses to both of you, while still naming no names./

Re: Confession
So very true about Las Vegas. I have a dear friend who grew up in Vegas [her parents run a high end flower show] and still lives there. She married three years ago.

*Raises Hand*

I'd care! I'd care!

I'd love to see Coop meet this lady. I'd also love to see their California vacation. I can tell you all about Disneyland in nauseating detail...

By the way... cute story! :D

OMG... *flails* This made me get all teary. When I saw Billy/OFC and Family Man I was thinking "um... is she talking about Coop?" haha. You certainly were and this was just lovely. A different perspective on Billy Cooper... I loved it.
