Numb3rs Fic: Come Full Circle
Written for numb3rs_het Summer Challenge 2008 – 25
A man travels the world over in search of what he needs and returns home to find it.
- George Moore

Title: Come Full Circle (Prequel to A Family Man's Homecoming)
Series/Universe: Not Leaving Las Vegas
Pairing/Characters: Billy/OFC
Rating: PG13
Spoilers: Man Hunt
Summary: To have and to hold from this day forward
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

Things never work out the way you expect them to, Billy thinks as he's standing at the altar.

Girls gaze longingly at bridal gowns in thick glossy magazines as early as their teens, anxious frat boys prick their fingers pinning their girlfriends and Billy Cooper just ran past all that and never stopped running.

Until now.

Growing up in Las Vegas he always made fun of the roadside chapels and the saps who got married there, always bitching that they should put drive through divorce processing right next to them. He couldn't imagine any relationship born in Sin City being worth the paper they, and their Elvis impersonator officiators, signed to make it legal.

But then the music starts up and it's not a slightly cheesy synthesizer programmed to sound like an organ, it's the wedding march and it means something now.

His mother's crying already, no big surprise. He'd spare her a quick glance, but his eyes seem to be glued to the double doors at the other end of this endless aisle.

He has his mother in his mind a thousand times over, kissing his cheek, welcoming him home for a visit from Fugitive Recovery and asking, never subtle, over dinner when he's coming home to stay.

Now Mother, he thinks. You got your wish.

He's been all over the United States: knows the crunch of the frozen tundra in Alaska under his boots, has the chaotic colors of Mardi Gras in New Orleans burned into his eyes, swam in the Pacific and the Atlantic Oceans. He's had homemade fried chicken in South Carolina, good old boy Texas barbecue on a cattle ranch, real foldable New York pizza in Brooklyn and licked the juice of both California and Florida oranges from his fingers.

He's trekked the Himalayas with Nepalese sherpas, backpacked across Europe with stringy haired hippies, gone scuba diving amongst the sharks in the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia and sailed the crystal blue waters of the Carribean on a catamaran.

And yet somehow this desert rat had come full circle, come home to find something he hadn't been looking for, or at least thought he hadn't sought, hadn't wanted, hadn't needed.

The doors open.

Adrenaline he knows: the rush of the hunt, the chase. This is different. This sensation - the skip tripping beat of his heart - this time it's about anticipation. Love.

In a moment of perfect clarity any lingering doubts are erased. He knows. This is what he wants, more than anything. This is what he's been waiting for.

No more waiting.

She appears. He forgets to breathe.

It's all a dream he fears he might wake from until, painfully slow step by step, she's beside him - right where she belongs, 'til death do us part'.

She offers him her hand.

He takes it with reverence.

It feels right, it feels like home.

He's happier than he's ever been in his whole life and he knows this is just the beginning.

The words rest lightly on his lips and he can't wait to hear her say 'I do'.

Things never work out the way you expect them to, Billy thinks as he's standing at the altar.

Sometimes they work out far better than you can ever dream.

I confess this isn't the fic I set out to write.

When people surprised me by wanting more of the backstory on A Family Man's Homecoming I started getting ideas. Lots of ideas. Lots and lots of ideas.

I outlined the fic I intended to write: a prequel describing everything from their meeting and courtship to their wedding and perhaps even the birth of their twins.

And then I put my head in my hands when it hit me just how long this fic would be and how little time I had to get it in by deadline.

Thus the idea to focus on the quote and write just a flyover type fic, which changed in the writing to just a vignette. /shrugs/ I don't argue with the muse anymore. She's stubborn and I never win. I had worried I couldn't make the long fic easily fit the quote so this way I free the long fic from constraints, get a nice moment in this universe and fulfill my fic challenge obligation.

All that and I get to enjoy an unabashedly romantic fic starring a dressed up cleaned up Billy. Seriously, where's the bad?

Okay, so maybe the borderline sap is the bad, but hey, I couldn't angst up a wedding fic. That wouldn't be nice. Let it not be said I can't write happy fic.

And happy Het fic at that. /grins/

Okay, there's one more bad, but really only for me.

I'm a stickler for naming my series after the first fic in the series, right? So here I am with my first fic being pretty much last in the series, then writing one in the middle next. The main fic, which in my head is called Not Leaving Las Vegas because I'm too anal to call it (Not) Leaving Las Vegas, remains to be written yet it's going to be the one the series is named after. /headdesk/ What a mess! Ugh. How did I get myself into this?

Side Note: Can someone please get that Sheryl Crow song out of my head now? Please?

Very special thanks to beta melissima for her assistance with this fic.

Ha! I knew when I read that first sentence from the Meme that it was going to be amazing where ever it ended up.

And it is. I love it. It's so real for me to picture this and Billy and the words and the waiting and everything.

Wonderful job, Emma.

Thank you.

I'm so anti-schmoop it's hard for me to go there, but every year it seems I end up writing something hopelessly romantic. I guess deep down it's in me somewhere. :-)

No worries, my dear Mlle Emma, you can definitely write happy fic! Even happy Het fic! LOL

I also like your idea of backstories... always wanted to know a bit more about "The Ladies Man" and now we are witness of his marriage - gorgeous, simply gorgeous, my Dear!

Thank you very much for sharing this romantic snippet, dear Emma, and have a great Sunday!

Man... I was getting cold chills being so excited reading this.

I really enjoyed all the places that Coop has been and how he's come home again...

Loved the "things never work out the way you expect them to..." from both the beginning and the end.

Just loved... all of this. *flails and waits impatiently for the rest* :)

/is delighted/

I really adore his wife and am looking forward to writing when they meet. She's strong yet feminine, tough on the job but tender at home and totally can match him evenly on the banter. I kind of imagined he'd need to end up with a woman he respected, not just loved, and she's someone well worthy of his respect.

The only problem is, I can't seem to settle on a NAME for her! /headdesk/

I swear, it's ridiculous. Two fic in, several more fic in my head including dialogue for the scene in which they meet, and I still have no name for her. /shakes head in disbelief/

I have a first letter, a kind of name and a rejected name that I like but figure is too hard to type/remember/believe. Here's hoping the muse gives it up soon, because you can only call someone by terms of endearment so much, you know? /grins/

So glad you like this! It really makes me smile.

Your OFC sounds like me when I was trying to establish Callie Walker as an OFC to pair with Colby. She wasn't as stubborn as yours about giving up her name. haha. Naming is ALWAYS the hard part - the new OFC I have for the Star Trek fic I've been writing told me about her name but didn't tell me what it was. We eventually figured it out... but damn, writing stories should be more of a challenge than coming up with the character's name! haha.

I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more of this OFC and more of Billy... after all, it doesn't REALLY matter who you pair Billy with - he's YUMMY!!! :)

*still wonders why she doesn't have a Billy icon.

I think I'll be capping that episode and making icons this weekend. *nods*
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on June 17th, 2009 09:52 pm (UTC)
Oh, methinks you'll have one happy Mel if you decide to fresh cap and icon Billy!

Normally I get everything up front - and I mean everything as in the whole fic appears in my head and I just have to type it immediately - but in this case no name. I could describe her visually by picking two actresses and saying she's between the two, but I have no idea why the name eludes me. /shrugs/

Yay for you writing Reboot! I loved the thing about Uhura's name. I'm totally into characters who believe in the power of names and withholding them so as to not let that other person have power over you and that's a bit of what it felt like in Star Trek. I might indulge in a Reboot fusion fic this summer for the N100 Summer Crossover Spectacular (hoping you will do more Mentalist fic for that!) which might lead me to adding the fandom for real. Who knows.

Anyway, I committed to doing this universe for the Rewind so she gets a name this month whether the muse gives it to me or not! :-)

I would love to write anything right now. I've not posted a fic since... April. I don't know. I am just uninspired which really breaks my heart. I've been doing some writing but... I don't know. I just wish I could write a drabble or something Numb3rs related. I'm trying to be patient. My muse takes vacation for months at a time. Maybe after I get back from vacation, I'll be more inspired.

I can't wait to read more of this universe... Especially since I'm capping the Billy episode today to make icons. hehehe. :)

Thank you. Billy's an odd choice for an OFC universe, but I really liked him like this.
