Title: Gone But Not Forgotten
Pairing/Characters: Dean, Castiel, Sam
Rating: PG13
Spoilers: No Rest for the Wicked, Lazarus Rising, AYTGIMDW, Yellow Fever
Summary: Dean needs to get back to normal after the fear's gone (Yellow Fever Post-Ep)
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

It's the first time Sam's left him alone since he was humiliated beyond belief at being turned into a freaking coward.

At least Sam didn't see him running for his life from a fucking purse dog.

The Impala's a sanctuary and Dean needs that about now, blasting the most manly music he has in his tape collection while trying to forget what he said about his tape collection.

Trying to forget it all, actually.

He pulls off the side of the road where there's a view of the lake beyond, but he doesn't see it. The last few days are replaying in his head like he's trapped in some Clockwork Orange universe where he can't look away.

He doesn't jump when Castiel just appears in the passenger seat; he doesn't.

"You've forgotten Hell," Castiel says as if he's just continuing an ongoing conversation and not just dropping in on Dean's private time, thank you very much. "Most of it at least, because the mind needs to forget to function."

Dean bites back a retort. Castiel's words still sting in his ears: 'You should show me some respect'. That and the part about going back to Hell even though he knows that won't happen, right? If God commanded Castiel to drag him out of Hell, Castiel can't just toss him back on a whim. Dean's just trying to make sure he doesn't give God any reason to order him back into the pit. Best not to piss off the messenger.

Especially one he can't kill.

"Yeah, well tell my mind to forget these last few days," Dean huffs. "Because it sure as hell is getting in the way of my 'functioning'."

He didn't really mean it as a request so when Castiel reaches towards him he backs off a little, brow furrowing in apprehension.

"I can't make you forget it all, nor should I," Castiel says. "However I can help."

Castiel's fingertips are cool against Dean's face; Dean's eyes fall closed. A few seconds pass or a few minutes, Dean's not sure, but when Castiel removes his hand, he's still sitting there and there's still AC/DC on the car stereo.

Damn, he forgot how much he likes that song.

He taps out a particularly good drum flourish on the steering wheel and turns to tell Castiel what a really good song this is and he should listen, but he's gone.

Dean shakes it off with a shrug and starts down the road again, enjoying the rest of the tape before he finally heads back to the motel, head still bobbing, lyrics just under his breath as his keys jangle in his hand.

"You're back!" Sam looks up from the laptop, hiding his relief well, but not well enough. "You go clear your head?"

It's then that Dean figures out what Castiel did for him. The memories aren't gone - just sufficiently buried.

"Yeah," he beams, tossing his keys in the air and catching them expertly with a smug little grin on his face. "All cleared up!"

This was written for my friend umbralillium's recent birthday. Again, I was lame and didn't manage to post same day. And yes, all the four or whatever birthday fic I did in the last couple of weeks were emailed on time, so I'm not a *completely* sucky friend, just a rather lame one. /feels bad/ /offers friends cookies in consolation for being stuck with me/

If you haven't been to umbralillium's LJ? She has a great pic of Misha Collins aka Castiel in her header. I was so inspired by it I wrote her Dean and Castiel for her birthday.

Amazingly, no baked goods were to be found. /big grin/

There is, however, AC/DC. /bigger grin/

Psh. He totally stopped off to buy some donuts on the way back to the motel. Don't try to pretend otherwise.

Re: Confession
Wait, maybe donuts don't count as baked. Are they always fried? My bad. STILL. Haha.

I just made myself hungry.

Re: Confession
Damn woman. I want donuts now - baked, fried, fricassed, don't care. WANTS.

/glares at you/

And they *so* do munchies runs, you know it. Dean lives for convenience store food. /points to Lazarus Rising/

Re: Confession
Dooooonuuuuuuuts... Now I want to eat donuts AND watch The Simpsons. *sigh*

"Munchies" reminds me that I was totally craving Sam&Dean-get-high fic earlier.

Re: Confession
OMG Just say no to Win!Stoner fic!

Are there any decent donut shops around? Mel and I actually meant to ask you, believe it or not, since I suggested donuts as a NaNo milestone treat.

Re: Confession
Oh, come on... ;-)

I don't eat donuts very often! Um. There's a donut shop right next to The Lanesplitter on San Pablo, which is maaaaybe slightly sketchy but pretty yummy. Other than that I don't know! Maybe you could check yelp.com?

Nice story! I like the idea of Castiel helping Dean to forget.
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on November 3rd, 2008 08:59 am (UTC)
Thanks! It can be viewed as an act of compassion if you like or just a way for Castiel to use his abilities to keep Dean at the top of his game for what's to come since he's apparently needed.

I prefer the former. :-)

Very nice... ::hugs dean::

I was waiting for this. *grin* She told me about it, but didn't let me read it, which is fine. I liked that moment between Dean and Castiel. For someone like Dean, being seen acting like a coward is the worst thing that can happen to him. He would need help pushing them far enough away to be able to focus on what needs to be done. Bravo!
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on November 8th, 2008 04:55 am (UTC)
She didn't let you see it? /mind boggles/

Meanie! /glares at her/

The next best gift he could have given? Making sure Sam forgets it too. /grins/

Sorry it took so long to get these all up!
Jestana: #s: Donjestana on November 8th, 2008 06:40 pm (UTC)
I didn't mind. We knew you were going to post it eventually, so I was content to wait. I didn't show her the one you wrote for me, either, so it's fair. *grin*

No problem! It's worth the wait.
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on November 8th, 2008 07:48 pm (UTC)
ROFL You guys are too funny, holding fic hostage!

Next time I shall have to stick my tongue at you both and publish it on mlleemma - both of them on the same day!
Jestana: #s: Edgertonjestana on November 9th, 2008 02:54 am (UTC)
No, it's not holding it hostage. I just decided to wait for you to post her fic and she waited for mine to be posted to read it. If I'd asked, she probably would have let me read hers. If she'd asked, I'd have let her read mine.

This was excellent. I like how you portrayed Castiel as the straight-shooting semi-emotionless angel we all know and love (except maybe for Ruby, haha) yet had him performing an act that could be construed as compassion.

SPN's been treading a delicate balance with their portrayal of angels in the episodes, I think (and doing a decent job in my opinion) and you stuck wonderfully to canon. Awesome job!!
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on November 8th, 2008 04:58 am (UTC)
Thank you! As much as I often like to play with canon to my own ends *cough*cestfic*cough* I do really like the challenge of meeting the series in tone and characterization. I really enjoy Castiel and think Misha's doing a great job with him. It was interesting to try to strike that balance with him in this fic and I liked that the end result was fairly open to interpretation.

Thanks for reading!

Yeah. Dean's smart, and smart enough to not think he can outsmart God. ;-)

Thanks for reading!
