Posted to bau_fic

Title: A Warm Welcome
Pairing/Characters: Aaron, Emily, JJ, Penelope, Derek, Spencer, Jason
Rating: PG13
Spoilers: Seasons 1-2, Doubt, In Birth and Death, Lo-Fi
Summary: Spencer's taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds and Jason has to come
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

Walking away is easy - the dramatic gesture, the grand exit, never to return.

Coming back is hard.

/

Aaron, stoic as ever, offers him only a curt nod, but does nothing to hide the accusations in his hard eyes.

"He's in room 417."

Emily, daughter of a diplomat indeed, greets him with a polite smile and a firm handshake.

"Good to see you, sir."

JJ, on the phone - her hand nervously roaming over her round belly - looks up and her eyes widen, her voice faltering.

"Yeah, yeah... I'm still here... It's just... No, something unexpected happened..."

Garcia's curled in on herself in a waiting room chair, but she sees him pass by, peering over her old-fashioned glasses.

"Oh my god..."

Morgan's pacing outside the door, an angry frustrated prowl of helplessness that's got to be killing him.

"Oh, no," he says. "They won't let us in there so no way you're going in." He's furious, as if this tragedy gives him license to speak his mind, to speak the subtext they're all thinking: 'you left us, you don't get to come back'.

Jason stands up tall. This is painful for him, but he's not afraid of any of them.

"I'm going in."

/

Spencer's always seemed too frail, gawky, bony. He's too tall for his body, too much brain, not enough muscle.

No wonder he wasn't fast enough.

Jason hardly recognizes him beneath the tubes and wires, beneath the bandages, half hidden by sheets and curtains, by whirring noises and persistent beeps.

His eyes are closed and Jason's struck by how long his lashes are, how delicate his features. Spencer knew profilers weren't required to carry guns, to enter tactical situations, yet he insisted on it - determined to be every bit as good as the other agents, even if he was one of the worst shots in the Bureau.

His ashen pallor is unsettling and Jason wishes anyone out there had let him know Spencer's condition before he came in. But he's alive - that's all that matters.

And if Jason has any influence, he's going to stay that way.

His hand slips awkwardly into that of the boy he mentored, he helped shepherd into adulthood, and for a second he imagines Stephen in the bed and winces. The pain's already hard to bear - he doesn't need more to make it hit harder, to make this journey more arduous than it has been.

Spencer's eyes flicker and open, the sharp intellect behind them masked in a haze of drugs and pain.

"Gideon?" he breathes, questioning reality.

"Hello, Reid."

Limp fingers come to life, grasp his with a strength that tells him not to underestimate this young man. He's a fighter, like the rest of them. He'll pull through.

"You came..."

Jason offers him a kindly smile, a squeeze of his hand, a breaking heart.

"I couldn't stay away..."

Confession
This was written for galaxy_song's request on the Fall Fandom Free for All. She asked for CM Gen with "Reid finding out he is sick or gets really hurt and Gideon comes back to see him. The others are angry at him for just leaving but Reid is glad to have him back".

I went for a kind of a flyover approach, but I still tried to hit hard with the emotion, however fleeting.

I like the idea of Reid getting shot up in the field. He's a horrible shot and so insubstantial physically that any major injury would hit him harder than say Morgan, who's really solid.

Who am I kidding? I just love hospital hurt/comfort fic period! More angst please!

FWIW I like that the title isn't the case except for Reid, who does actually give Gideon a warm welcome. He gets a pretty damn cold reception from the team, but Reid isn't like that. Of all of them he's the most likely to be forgiving and put aside old hurts just to see his mentor again, especially in a time of need.

/tangent/ It's been 3 years exactly today since I posted my disclaimer. Huh. My first post on LJ ever. Feels like it's been more than 3 years...

Thanks,

Emma DeMarais

I really love this. I love the relationship between Gideon and Reid, and love the way you wrote Morgan.

One minor point, though. Unless Gideon left much earlier in this story, Emily wouldn't have needed to "read so much about" him, because they were in fifteen episodes together.

Edit: Oh, and, adding to mems, because I loved this that much.

Wow! Really? /is honored/ Thank you!

Thanks for catching my snafu. I didn't sleep well last night and I think I had the Elle and Rossi mixed connection in my head, not Emily and Gideon. /smacks side of head/ See if what I replaced it with works better.

That works perfectly. It fits with how diplomatically she's been raised to be.

And, yeah, it's easy to mix up. I don't think Rossi and Gideon ever met (unless they worked together way before the timeline we're shown).
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on November 5th, 2008 10:55 pm (UTC)
Great. I figure she also didn't work with Gideon long enough to form the kind of emotional attachment that lends itself to a reaction like Hotch or Morgan's.

I would think Rossi and Gideon had met at some point, professionally, but for the purposes of this fic it seemed prudent just to leave Rossi out of it.

You broke me! That isn't nice. I'm now a broken Lee.

I'm not sure which is worst the moment between Reid and Gideon or the perfect characterization of the others. Gah! So, so good.
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on November 5th, 2008 10:03 pm (UTC)
Aww... /pets/ I didn't mean to!

Will it help if I tell you Reid gets all better fast, Gideon apologizes and everyone forgives him?

Just don't ask me if unicorns are real. ;-)

You should go ask for a happy Five Things on my other LJ to make up for it. Go! Shoo!
PhilLeeGirlphilleegirl on November 5th, 2008 10:36 pm (UTC)
*sniff* Yes!

Unicorns are real! Aren't they?

I did, since you insisted.

/hides unicorn and zombie fic/

Uh, sure! Yeah!

And yay! /goes over there/

Wow
I love how you have the team reacting to Jason's sudden reappearance It's also really cool that Jason is seen as a mentor, not a lover. To me, that isn't how their relationship dynamic works. I'm not saying that because I hate slash or anything like that. It's just that, for me, CM isn't really about pairing the members of the team with one another. It's more about how they work together and become very, very close friends by reason of their constant stressful assignments and proximaty to each other.

Anyway, This is a great ficlit! :D I'm going to shut up now.

Re: Wow
Thanks for your great comment!

I'm not much for slash or any kind of ships in CM. I write a lot of Morgan and Garcia, but rarely Morgan/Garcia sex since I prefer their close canon relationship to a romantic and sexual one. Some shows are just naturally slashy and while CM can do the 'two hot guys' formula of slash I just don't feel it with any of them. /shrugs/ I mean, Shemar's hot and Reid's adorable, but I don't see them together or with Hotch or Gideon and sure as hell not Rossi. (Femslash is a whole other story.)

I do think their situation caused them to form a much deeper bond than co-workers normally would, which is why it hurt so much for Gideon to leave like that.

And for him to return like that as well...
