In time, as it always does, the fog lifted.

They left the hotel at 9AM sharp, no dawdling, and cleared out of the police station - accepting, and offering, solemn nods of solidarity from the officers there.

The plane was silent on the trip back to Quantico, the agents wordlessly going their separate ways upon landing save Jason's brief order not to return to work until next Monday.

/

Morgan turned around and booked a flight to Chicago, spending the long weekend alternately complimenting his mother's cooking and staring out the window, eyes unseeing save what was in his head.

Spencer went home and wrote a long letter to his mother then decided it wasn't right and wrote a new one. He didn't like that version so he tried just writing his nightmare. His hand started to cramp after the fifth page.

Elle went to her gym and kickboxed out her emotions until she was so drained she slept for most of the weekend.

Aaron took Haley to the doctor despite her protests and then spent the weekend holding his son until he fussed so much Haley took him away, scolding him and asking what was wrong. Aaron had no answer for her, but he didn't let either of them out of his sight.

Jason looked up Deborah, after he confirmed her kidnapper was still firmly in prison, and asked her for a new picture. She told him she'd be happy to send a new one and no she hadn't moved recently nor had no plans to.

Then he called his son Steven.

/

"Hey."

"Hey."

Derek shifted in the coffee room to give Elle room to make herself a cup.

"Get any sleep this weekend?"

Elle looked pensive for a second. "A lot actually. You?"

Derek shook his head. "Late flight back from Chicago last night. Hard to get any rest on commercial flights, you know?"

The corners of Elle's mouth crooked up in a tiny smile. "The jet got you spoiled?"

Derek huffed out a little chuckle. "Easier to sleep on our plane, but no way any of us are ever joining the Mile High Club on that thing."

They took their coffee and headed to their desks, walking shoulder to shoulder.

/

"JJ!"

JJ paused on the way to her office and let Spencer catch up to her.

"What's up?"

"Can I borrow your shredder?"

JJ frowned at him. "You have a shredder, we all do."

Reid looked down at the slightly crumpled wad of handwritten papers in his hand, the bottom two inches of which were mangled.

"I kind of busted it. I think I overloaded it."

JJ gave him a kindly pat on the arm.

"That's okay, Spence. I've got a heavy duty model and you're welcome to use it - any time."

Spencer managed a weak smile for her as she led him into her office.

"Thanks." He sat down on the floor, his gangly legs cross-legged, and turned on the shredder.

The electronic hum buzzed quietly until he fed the first sheet in. Watching as if mesmerized, he gazed at each piece of paper as they were transformed into little white diamonds in the bin below.

"All done?" JJ asked.

This time Spencer's smile was wide and genuine.

"Definitely done."

/

"You're pensive this morning."

Aaron looked up to find Jason studying him from his doorway. He cocked his head to tell him to come in and Jason closed the door behind him.

"This job... It makes you see things that aren't there, you know?"

Jason made himself comfortable in Aaron's guest chair. "In searching out the nuances of human behavior we become over sensitized to those nuances and read things into them..."

"That aren't actually there," Aaron finished for him. He rubbed the bridge of his nose tiredly. "This case... It put an idea into my head... About Haley."

"Is she all right, is the baby all right?" Jason asked quickly.

"They're fine," Aaron said, waving his hand in a dismissive gesture. "But I made Haley go in for a postpartum depression screening."

Jason just nodded sagely. "Even if the screening was for your peace of mind and not about Haley's mind, it was still worth it." He studied Aaron across the desk for a moment. "That's not all, is it?"

"No," Aaron stated. "It isn't. But I can handle it."

"You always do," Jason said, rising.

There was a brisk rap at the door and JJ held up a file through the window.

"Looks like we have another case." Aaron let out a slightly exasperated sigh, but Jason gave him an encouraging smile.

"Let's go save some lives."

/

JJ stood in the conference room, holding the urgent case file she'd just gotten called about.

Five agents sat looking at her, each determined, ready.

Aaron gestured for her to begin the briefing.

"Daylight's wasting. Let's get started..."

Confession
So this is me, giving up on the final installment of this series.

Mea culpa.

I wrote this in August (Two years almost to the day since I wrote the first installment - Nightmares) and just wasn't satisfied with it, though I could never say why or what it was it needed.

Now it's November and I'm facing facts: I don't have the energy to rework this fic from scratch. I really don't.

So in the interest of not keeping this series going for a third year, I'm publishing this now and ending it.

I had always imagined from the very beginning that the series would be Nightmares, a fic for each of the agent's nightmares, then Daylight. I just thought Daylight would be more satisfying, fulfilling, you know?

Part of me thinks they should have done something as a team to address the trauma, but it never appeared when I tried to write so I've got nothing.

So YMMV on how you think they would have made the transition from tragedy to normalcy. I'm just making my own transition final. I started this series in 2006. It's time to bury it, grieve and move on.

Thanks,

Emma DeMarais

Thank you. Logically there is nothing wrong with it. It just never felt right to me, you know? I always felt I could have done better, though I have no clue what better would have looked like.

And thanks for taking the time to read the whole series!

Yay, someone who remembers the series! Thank you! I feel horrid about it taking so bloody long, but it took a little act of god to get the muse to work on it. I still really like the nightmares in this series - Morgan's and Reid's still creep me out - I just had put so much pressure on myself for Reid's that I paralyzed the series in the process. /sigh/
