Numb3rs Fic: Benefit of the Doubt
Written for numb3rs100 Challenge #187 – Debate

Title: Benefit of the Doubt
Pairing/Characters: Don/Colby, Dwayne
Rating: PG13
Word Count: 200
Spoilers: Trust Metric
Summary: Don hesitates and gives Colby the benefit of his doubt
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

"Colby!"

Don races across the subway platform; Dwayne and Colby are hemmed in - there's nowhere to go.

So they jump.

Don's looking right at Colby. He's so close; he can't miss. One shot is all it will take.

An internal debate rages; voices shout in his head: Traitor! Friend! Spy! Loyal! Colby!

A train is coming into the platform. There's only a second to act: to save a life or end one.

Don does not fire.

+

"Colby?"

Colby's head is buried in his hands, grief clear in the brittle arc of his slumped shoulders. His cell phone - the bearer of bad news - lies still flipped open at his feet.

His head snaps up when Don lays a consoling hand on his shoulder; he's so lost in his pain he barely registers Don's presence.

"My mom... She's gone. I should have been there."

"I understand."

A man loses his mother: this Don knows.

There are no voices shouting down his decision this time.

"Come on. I'm going to take you home."

Home is Don's apartment. Home is Don's bed. Colby loses one home in the woman who gave him life and finds a new one in Don's arms.

Confession
Oh look. Another Don/Colby fic. ;-) I blame N100 for making them the challenge pairing of the month.

Oh wait. I picked them for N100. Never mind. Hehehe

The title comes from a line Charlie says to Don right after the Trust Metric scene referenced in the first part of the drabble. Don goes to Charlie and admits he let Colby go. Charlie, of course, wants to turn Don's decision into math for his trust metric equation.

Charlie says, "Were you basing your decision on his statement, the circumstantial context, or a disposition towards giving him the benefit of the doubt?"

I figured Colby really does benefit from Don's doubt: he not only lives, but ends up with Don in the end.

There's just this little pesky problem with that scene in my mind.

If Don couldn't bring himself to shoot Colby to stop them?

Why the hell didn't he shoot *Dwayne*?

/shakes head/

I guess we couldn't have that, huh? That would have meant no dramatic (read expensive) rescue at sea... ;-)

Thanks,

Re: Confession
Can't go wrong with Don/Colby. Absolutely loved the line: Colby's head is buried in his hands, grief clear in the brittle arc of his slumped shoulders. Great imagery.

If Don couldn't bring himself to shoot Colby to stop them? Why the hell didn't he shoot *Dwayne*?

I like to think that he was just too focused on Colby. That whole scene, and afterwards when Don is talking to Charlie, he never mentions Dwayne. It's like Don saw Colby and his brain couldn't register anyone else. :)

Re: Confession
Thanks. I should try to write more Don/Colby. I often can't understand the appeal of a pairing until after I've written them a few times (as in Charlie/Colby).

It's like Don saw Colby and his brain couldn't register anyone else. :)

Hehehe I know some fangirls like that. /grins/

I like this story in two scenes. :)

I think Don didn't shoot Dwayne because as you said, the plot demanded it he might have hit Colby and was focused on Colby in that moment.

(And also, the plot. ;)

Hehehe Thanks. I have fun picking apart my shows just for the heck of it, but then overthinking is my way in pretty much all things. ;-)

Wow, I love the connections between every paragraph and the next, even between the sentences... *applause* Wow!

Thank you! I'm surprised with all the supposed new Don/Colby fangirls out there almost no one has read this.

Awwwww. I like the last line.

I'm having an oxytocin rush and can't seem to find a vocabulary, haha.

HEE! /gives you badge for best comment of the day/

Nothing like a little neurotransmitter mention to make my inner psychologist perk right up and smile. :-)

Thanks!
