"I caught the bad guy - you always said that was Daddy's job, catching bad guys - but it didn't help. It didn't bring you back..."

Nate almost knocked over his mostly empty Scotch bottle reaching out to pick up the picture frame.

"I was supposed to take care of you, Sam. I failed you."

A creak of floorboard made him lift his head abruptly.

Maggie stood hovering in the doorway.

"Hello, Nate."

"How did you get in?" he sputtered.

She just shrugged. "Parker."

She crouched down in front of him, smoothing his hair from his face.

"Let me help."

"He's been ignoring us for days, drinking - well, more than normal." Parker trotted briskly up to Nate's front door and frowned when she discovered Maggie was still halfway down the walkway. "He won't let us in and he won't come out. We figured you might have a better shot."

"It's this time of year," Maggie explained when she caught up to her. "Today would have been Sam's birthday."

Parker bent down and picked the lock, pushing the door open silently.

"He's not armed," she whispered. "At least we don't think so." She patted Maggie on the arm. "Good luck!"

Despite the sour stench of alcohol, Maggie recognized the familiar scent of Nate beneath it all as her fingers threaded through his unkempt hair.

"I'm starting to forget how Sam smelled..." Her breath caught, the revelation like a hand squeezing her heart. "A mother shouldn't forget that, should she? How her child smelled?"

"Maggie..." Nate gazed at her with bloodshot eyes, all guilt and shame and the deepest pain any man could be forced to bear. "I am so sorry."

"Hush," she whispered, pulling him into her arms. "Only ten hours left of the day. We'll get through them together."

Title from The Church song The Unguarded Moment with the bonus irony that thieves love to get past guards yet this time it's the one who isn't a thief who succeeds. (Extra bonus for the lyric "I knew you'd find me drinking.")

Great fic. I can see Nate's alcoholism worsening on Sam's birthday. At least Parker brought in Maggie to help.

"Only ten hours left of the day. We'll get through them together."

I loved all of this, the way you captured the characters in a few short words, but this was the line that really got to me. It encapsulates how hard grief is perfectly, I think, and made a perfect ending line. I love this.
