Dollhouse Fic: Visibility
Written for dollhouseflash Challenge #004 – Secret

Title: Visibility
Pairing/Characters: Alpha, Mellie
Rating: PG
Spoilers: Ghost, The Target, Stage Fright, Gray Hour, True Believer
Summary: Alpha makes a delivery invisible to those around him
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

He blends. He does that. He's designed to fit in - perfectly.

Today his role is FBI Agent. The ID was easy enough to fake. The security? Child's play. The only challenge, if one could consider it that, was procuring just the right slightly ill fitting, slightly better than just off the rack, but not expensive, drab gray government suit and completely humorless tie so that he looks like every other drone in the building.

His mission is simple yet critical: deliver the package.

Paul Ballard isn't an idiot, but he's working too slowly. He has to be fed new information else there's a risk the higher ups will reassign him, take him off the Dollhouse case.

That cannot be allowed.

For a while it seemed like Paul would be persistent yet ineffectual. But seeing as how Adelle sent Victor after him? Clearly they consider him a threat to be reckoned with. The fact that he'd gotten shot, almost killed, and still come back to the case? That earned him a level of respect.

The photograph had been a tease. The disc in his hand that he so subtly works into the mail cart when the distracted young man isn't paying attention? That's an all access pass into a past the Dollhouse wants kept secret, buried, forgotten. No turning back now. He either trusts Paul to follow Caroline's trail or he doesn't.

The elevator door opens and he finds himself face to face with a familiar face: a woman holding a glass container of food.

"Oops, sorry!" Mellie says, trying to get out of his way so he can enter the elevator as she exits it. She pauses, looking back into the elevator, a quizzical expression on her face as she stares at him. "Do I know you?"

He presses the Lobby button then the door close button.

"No, ma'am. I don't think so."

I was supposed to publish this this weekend, but I was busy. It's too bad because at 314 words long it would have been perfect for Pi Day on 3/14. When I did the word count I had the title in there too so at 315 it would have even been fine for 3/15, but I was busy and put it off and didn't even write the bunny until after midnight, thus 3/16, so I'm left with what could have been... /sigh/ /is a numbers geek/

FWIW if you're wondering if I kept the ending vague on purpose? Yes. I won't spoil, but I figure there are plenty of opinions about it so you can decide in your head what's going on in each of theirs.

This is really great, but I have to say, I just don't know how to comment because almost everything I could say would be spec or spoiler or...

I'm glad you left the ending ambiguous. We'll leave it at that :)

Truly, a great story.

Ah ha! See, now I hadn't thought of that! Of course people can't really comment in detail because so many people - myself included - are spoiler wary and it might get seen by the wrong eyes. Mea culpa!

But yes, depending on how much you know or surmise, the ending can mean different things. I wanted people to enjoy it on their own personal level. /grins/

Thank you so much for your great comment!

So glad I didn't read this until after I watched last night's episode. The ending works on a number of different levels and is chilling all at the same time.

I love you. I do. Really, and when did you start writing Dollhouse fic. /sighs/ I miss everything because of school. /pouts/

Keyla! /smishes/

I started pretty much when the show started and I even own the dollhouseflash comm. It's the Jossverse! How could I resist getting in on the ground floor? LOL

I'm sorry school is sucking up your free time. I miss you hanging around LJ with me, but sad to say I've not been around much myself. /points to fairly empty LJ this month/

Regardless, all my DH fic are short and the comm was designed just for short fic, so when you do have time it's easy to read a little nugget here and there.

/puts out a big platter of snickerdoodles, oatmeal chocolate chip cookies and brownies for you to make up for how long you've been gone/

mmmm dessert time. :D
I'll add that comm and I have break next week so maybe in between rewriting my paper and reading, i'll read fic. I miss fic. :D
I can't wait till summer, that'll hopefully give me more free time.
I miss hanging on LJ too, and ur fics. /sighs/ (it's also sad that it took me 3 tries to write fic. /headdesk/
Anyway, back to homework.

I won't keep you, but I look forward to summer for you too.

/sends you off with some cupcakes/
