"There are three flowers in a vase.
The third flower is green."

November activates instantly, just as Topher promised. Despite him programming her with a craving for rich foods and sweets to ensure she put on enough weight to look like a normal girl next door, her hand-to-hand combat skills have not atrophied in the slightest. She dispatches Hearn handily - even faster than Adelle anticipated, which is good since Echo can only keep Paul distracted so long - and evades what everyone save Paul will believe to be an attacker sent by the Borodins.

The Actives all once had these skills in their wiped state. Alpha changed all that, leaving Sierra helpless against unwanted advances in her Doll state: a fact Hearn knew all too well and took advantage of. She watches, impassive, as November throws Hearn down and, with a well-placed stomp, breaks his neck against the coffee table. Viewing his lifeless body on the video feed, Adelle feels nothing: she takes no satisfaction in his death nor does she experience any remorse. It had to be done and at least this way his end serves some purpose.

'Do you have an exit strategy?' Laurence had asked her. She'd nearly laughed at that. As sharp as the man is, he does suffer from a certain naïveté when it comes to their employers. A woman in her position does not simply resign from this work. There is no exit to strategize, no escape from this life. She made a Faustian deal - a lifetime commitment - but she'll be damned if anyone but her will decide when that life ends. For now, her strategies are working as planned, especially those dealing with the Paul Ballard issue: November has been fully accepted and will be able to keep close tabs on him, Victor has been established as a source of intel allowing for misinformation campaigns and Oscar is about due for a third date with the former Mrs. Ballard. Every contingency covered, as always.

"There are three flowers in a vase.
The third flower is yellow."

Confession
I had a really good idea going for this fic and then I decided to rewatch the episode before I wrote it down. I lost it. /headdesk/ This was all I could remember about it and sadly the purpose of it - the zinger at the end - was lost. So I made up a new ending, adding the bit about Paul's ex-wife for the unexpected angle - and am left to mourn what could have been. /sigh/

FWIW, more than one person had said, like me, that it might take until the 6th episode for the network brass to get out of the way and let Joss do the show how he wanted. This was the first episode I truly got into and enjoyed completely. This? Finally felt like Joss. Welcome back. /bows before the Master/

Very special thanks to beta melissima for her assistance with this fic.

Thanks,

Emma DeMarais

it makes sense that there are Dolls we aren't seeing much/any of (ie Oscar)

very nice Mellie fic, and good Adelle fic.
