Brimstone Fic: Fading
Posted to lucifen

Title: Fading (Companion to lonelywalker's Pining)
Pairing/Characters: Rosalyn
Rating: PG13
Spoilers: Pilot
Summary: She tries, she really does
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

She tries, she really does.

She goes out on dates, when her friends push her to, and they're all nice men, really. One's even a doctor - a pediatrician - and it's just a bittersweet reminder that she and Zeke never had children. She ends that date early even though she'll never hear the end of it from Sheila.

She finds herself making the same mistakes she always did - saying the wrong thing at the wrong time, falling silent for long stretches, not remembering to laugh when he tells a joke in hopeful earnestness. It's work for her; it was never work with Zeke.

The goodnight part is always hardest - how to get by with saying she had a pleasant evening and a wave, trying to cut off the aborted effort for a kiss or worse the angling to come inside for 'coffee'. But she does what she has to. Her home is her sanctuary, even if it acts more like a tomb sealing her in her dead marriage.

She goes inside, makes herself a cup of tea and lets herself sink into a corner of the couch, sink into the realm of memory - when Zeke bought her that snowglobe, when they went on the Atlantic City trip where that framed picture was taken, when he came home soaking wet and desperate and they fell to the floor together and made love right there on the entry room rug. Only it wasn't this room. And the replay in her head is starting to lose its detail. The thought leaves her eyes glassy with unshed tears as she curls around her steaming tea mug.

The memories are fading.

She knows she's losing him.

Confession
This fic was written in response to and as a companion to lonelywalker's Pining, which she wrote in response to my request for Zeke/Rosalyn pining during a drabble meme on her LJ.

Thanks,

This is painful and lovely.

Only it wasn't this room. And the replay in her head is starting to lose its detail. The thought leaves her eyes glassy with unshed tears as she curls around her steaming tea mug.

The memories are fading.

Yes! I know that, right there, from experience. Excellent.

:swallows lump in throat, and applauds: Brava!

Did you read the companion fic? It's equally tragic. I feel so bad for them, I told lonelywalker I might have to sit down and write a happy ending for the series to reunite them after Zeke's done with all 113.
