Numb3rs Fic: First Do No Harm
Written for numb3rs100 Challenge #230 – Crutch

Title: First Do No Harm
Series/Universe: Regret to Inform
Pairing/Characters: Megan/Larry, OCs
Rating: PG13
Word Count: 300
Spoilers: Seasons 2-3
Summary: Megan post-surgery isn’t the Megan Larry once knew
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

Megan had the best care; she healed well – her body at least.

The doctors declared her free of cancer, but she was too weakened physically and too scarred emotionally to celebrate despite Larry’s urging that she revel, albeit sedately, in the good news.

The prognosis lifted the dark cloud over her parents – Elizabeth even began to call him Lawrence at the dinner table - but an ever-present one hovered over Megan.

She drifted like a wraith from room to room each day, Larry her white shadow, following her like the tail of a comet as she made her regular circuit, waiting for her spark to return to fire her path.

Chess games would be conceded midway through - considered pointless, movies abandoned before the climax, mentions of her doctoral work met with listless shrugs.

While Megan was showering – still not willing for him to see her disfigured body – Larry called her doctor to ask that she be screened for depression.

She fought it, as he knew she would, spouting all sorts of psychology research. She was adamant that she was fine and people should cut her some slack - she was recovering from almost dying after all.

Larry made like he agreed long enough to tell her that since she was clearly doing so well he’d booked a plane ticket to go back to California.

She crumbled then, all bluster gone, and pleaded with him to stay.

He agreed on the condition she let her doctor test her for depression.

He was willing to support her in whatever she needed; he wasn’t willing to be the crutch that kept her from moving forward.

Three weeks after starting on meds Megan beat him at chess, laughing in exultation at her victory.

Then Larry knew it was really time to go home.

Man, I'm really evil. I give Megan breast cancer then a double mastectomy and now I'm giving her a mental illness? Wow, it's a good thing I feed you guys juicy porn from time to time else you'd gang up on me for all the heart wrenching angst. Hehehe

FWIW the phrase "First do no harm" refers to doctors, but since Larry is such an important part of Megan's healing process he takes it upon himself to risk the drastic step of threatening to leave to get her to realize him staying is keeping her from the next phase of her healing and that's more important to him than anything.

Very special thanks to beta melissima for her assistance with this fic.

You are evil!

But this is most probably a natural reaction and I wouldn't be surprised at all if in this situation, Megan did get a bit depressed.

I don't want Larry to leave. =(

It rang true to me; it's a hard change for any woman to accept and her body chemistry is probably quite out of whack after all she's been through medically.

Sadly Larry must leave, but never fear. That doesn't mean he's gone for good. :-)

Thanks for reading this, hon.

Aw, Megan! I can understand the depression and it's just like Larry to threaten to leave to get her to realize that she needed help. He just wants what's best for her.

He does and that's at the root of him being there for her - he's totally her advocate, no agenda of his own.

Patience, the ending is coming soon and I know you'll like it.

Which is just what she needed. Someone who's sole interest was her recovery.

I'm sure I will, so long as it ends up with them settling down together. ;)

This was perfect. Absolutely pitch perfect.

This was truly wonderful, and so very much like Larry. The line about him not being her crutch was the most potent and I was glad he convinced her to get some help. *happy sigh*

I don't want him to leave though... not until he makes her remember the beautiful woman that she is. ^^ :)

This is lovely. I adore that Larry gave her enough room to decide but pushed her when she needed it.
