Title: Too Much/Not Enough
Pairing/Characters: Charlie/Larry
Rating: PG
Spoilers: None
Summary: Prompts - Too Much, Not Enough
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

033. Too Much

It's too much.

Larry seems to be everywhere he turns at Cal Sci. In his office, in the faculty library, at lunch...

Charlie realizes he'll never figure out how he feels about Larry if he's around all the time.

There's so much emotion and history all tied into one man: the professor who nurtured his love of physics and fluid dynamics, the mentor who helped him through his early days on the faculty, the friend who was there for him when his mother died, and now...

He knows Larry is interested in more. Somehow he's known since he first met him that Larry wanted to be a planet in Charlie's solar system.

Charlie's just not sure if that's what he wants.

034. Not Enough

Larry doesn't see Charlie as often as he wants to.

He's barely around these days, with all the consulting Don is having him do at the FBI.

Even when he is around, he's obsessed with solving whatever case Don has him on, so Larry volunteers his assistance, putting aside his own work just to briefly orbit in Charlie's atmosphere.

The times they have alone are so seldom now, Larry has to rely on his memories of the days when a newly minted Dr. Eppes sat at his feet and marveled at his knowledge of the cosmos.

Now it's Larry at Charlie's feet waiting for scraps.

No matter how hard he tries to insinuate himself more into Charlie's life, it always falls short of what he really craves.

It's not enough.

Confession
I'm not really a Charlie/Larry fan. There. I've said it. The slash part of the fandom seems to divide sometimes into the Don/Charlies and the Charlie/Larrys. I'm not squicked by the pairing really. I just don't feel the appeal of it. As such, it's hard for me to write them.

Still, I enjoy writing Larry and I love writing Charlie and their banter is really great once I get on a roll. So I thought I should try to write C/L just for the exercise of it. I think I wrote a few little tidbits I never published and from what I recall they were more about Larry's attraction to Charlie (which I could buy) versus any attraction Charlie had to Larry (the tougher sell).

So this fic has its basis in those beginnings. Larry is the more smitten of the two and, in this fic anyway, Charlie is uncertain but not ruling it out.

So apologies to the C/L fans out there. This was the best I could do for you. Mea culpa. /smiles/

Again, please go visit Audra's prompt table linked above for more great fic in this claim.

Very special thanks to beta iolsai for her assistance with this fic.

Thanks,

Re: Confession
I agree with you. I don't really see the pairing. I've always seen their relationship as more father/son, mentor/student (who's who at any given time is subject to change).

That aside, I think you've done a fine job with these. Brava!

Re: Confession
I like your thought about the mentor/student relationship being potentially reversible or at least situational.

When I think of Larry I tend to recall the chess scene with Alan, in which it's made clear that both men are father figures to Charlie, not just his own biological father. Larry, being an intellectual father to Charlie, had to realize that at some point this exceptional student would eventually outshine (read outgrow) his master. That's one reason why this pairing doesn't work for me. Maybe if it were set in younger days, but at this point there's not as much that Larry has to offer.

Thanks for your comment!

Well your confession aside, I liked it *g* Of course I read it as having potential in Charlie's case :D Larry breaks my heart. *loves him*

Well, my confession aside /grins/ it does have potential. I just wanted to write this from the POV of an imbalanced equation, inspired by the dichotomy of the prompts. Charlie's feelings exist, but are far outweighed by Larry's. It made it a lot easier for me to write this pairing, that's for sure.

Thanks for coming to comment!
