Title: First Impressions (Sequel to Beginnings)
Series/Universe: Beginnings
Pairing/Characters: Derek, Penelope, OCs
Rating: PG13
Spoilers: Extreme Aggressor
Summary: After a Quantico tech saves him in the field Morgan has to meet her in person
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

Derek wove his way through the unfamiliar hallways of the tech pool area at Quantico looking for a sign he was in the right place. He'd flown back from their case on the West Coast that morning and even though Jason had told them all to go home and take the rest of the day off, Derek had some unfinished business to attend to first.

"Excuse me…" He flagged down a passing tech. "I'm a little lost here. I'm looking for Penelope Garcia."

Before the young man could respond, a tiny Asian girl breezing past halted at the sound of Penelope's name.

"You want Garcia? I'm headed that way. I can take you."

Derek followed the sprightly young woman who seemed to talk as fast as she walked.

"She has a cubicle like the rest of us do, but she's always in our war room. You just can't fit enough screens in those stupid little cubicles and besides all the really good hardware is in there..."

She wound through a dense maze of cubicles then turned a corner which revealed a large set of double glass doors. Through the doors Derek saw a room full of computer workstations set up like a theatre all facing a stage area of sorts which had huge screens hung all over, each with a different display. Some were satellite imagery, some graphical monitors and still others live video feeds. It seemed the focus was on an airport and the techs that were manning the stations all had headsets on and were typing furiously.
His guide ushered him in then gestured to him to wait.

Before he could ask her which one was Penelope she was already on a headset and immersed in the work, talking just as fast to whoever was at the other end of the line.

He stood around and watched for a while but became impatient and began to roam the room, watching over the shoulders of the techs as they worked. Some seemed to be scanning crowds with facial recognition software, some were remotely monitoring levels on what he guessed were chemical detection units. As he passed he tried to listen to the voice of each woman he stood behind, hoping to recognize the voice that had talked him through his narrow escape in the underground tunnels the day before.

As he neared the front rows a sound rose above the hush of voices. In front of the first row of techs there was an additional row of folding tables that had obviously not been part of the original plan of the room. The sound he had heard was repeated - wheels on the only part of the floor not carpeted. A woman with a profusive mop of light blonde curls atop her head was gliding between monitors at opposite ends of the table, typing first at one and then the other.

Curious, he descended down to that level. The monitors before her were far more active than the others, so much so he couldn't keep up enough to see what they had on them. It looked more like raw data than pictures, but even that scrolled by so fast he couldn't make it out.

As she worked he took a closer look at her. She clearly had a retro vibe going on, the floral patterned dress somewhere between 50s housewife and 50s pin up girl. She wore chunky vintage jewelry, bright red shoes and tucked beside the faux red rose in her hair was a section of hair died bright red as well. Few people were individualists at the Bureau - either because the FBI attracted traditionalists or because they knew sticking out like this might likely keep them from being promoted. For her to get away with the loud getup she had on and getting them to give her this custom setup when all the other techs had to make do with standard workstations? She had to be his Penelope. That kind of talent was worth any amount of crazy hairstyles and bright red flowered dresses.

"Yes!" With a single word of jubilation she almost bounced out of her chair in excitement. He followed her eyes as the main video screen above their heads changed to an airport surveillance camera aimed at an airport thoroughfare.

A graphical box of red lines surrounded one face as it moved through the crowd, clearly tracking the target they'd been seeking.

If the room had seemed like it was jumping before, now it was at fever pitch.

With an experienced eye Derek could see the undercover agents moving in on their target, confirmed when a second later green boxes surrounded the agents, tracking them on the fly as well.

Watching closely, he witnessed a textbook takedown for a public and populated place, four agents with two flanking them easily taking control of the target and directing him out of the flow of humanity into a side doorway with almost surgical precision.

A loud cheer rang up and several of the techs leaped out of their chairs in glee, one even pounding his fist in the air.

The blonde woman pushed her chair back, glowing with satisfaction as she addressed the screen.

"Thank you for playing the Homeland Security version of our game. We have some lovely parting gifts for you on your way to our glamorous Federal Detention Facility in Miami, Florida! Yes, it's Terrorists 0, Penelope Garcia 1 and the day's not even over yet, folks!"

Derek started applauding, grinning from ear to ear. Of course it was her - who else would it be?

She turned as if surprised to find someone standing behind her and her face lit up.

"Well, if it isn't the still very much alive and thankfully no longer soaking wet Agent Derek Morgan!"

"At your service, oh mistress of all things digital," he said, with a grand bow. "I didn't want to interrupt you working your magic for any other agents, but I just had to come meet your illustrious self in the flesh to say thank you once again for saving my bacon."

She twirled in her chair, clearly relishing his show of appreciation.

"And such nice bacon it is," she teased. "Speaking of, I believe there was an offer of dinner in there somewhere as well? Hmm?"

"Absolutely," Derek replied. "So when you're not busy saving the world from terrorists why don't you give me a ring at the BAU and we'll pick a night for me to wine and dine you in the fashion to which you should definitely be accustomed?"

"Music to my ears," she crooned. "Why can't every agent offer proper tribute after I come to their rescue?"

"Well, you just point me in their direction and I'll go give them what for on your behalf," Derek said with a chuckle. "Seriously…" He gave her a heartfelt smile as he took her hand. "Thank you. I mean it."

Penelope gave his hand a squeeze in return. "Happy to help." The serious moment passed, her lip curled up in a little quirky grin. "You keep going out and hunting down pigs and I'll be happy to keep looking after the bacon." One of her computers started beeping and she had to turn her attention to it. "Duty calls," she said with an apologetic shrug.

"No problem. I'll let you get back to kicking ass and taking names."

"You know it, sugar!" She flashed him a quick yet friendly smile then turned to her keyboard, red painted fingernails flying over the keys.

He started to leave, but turned and came back after only a few steps.

"Hey, Garcia…" When she looked up expectantly, he continued. "What would you say to the idea of being dedicated to the BAU - working for just us full time?"

This time her smile went ear to ear as she beamed.

"You might be able to lure me over there, if you were, say, persuasive enough? And asking over dessert wouldn't hurt your chances."

She batted her eyelashes at him mock coyly and he just threw back his head and laughed.

"If I have to court you with a dozen dinners," he bowed again, this time even deeper, "I'll do whatever it takes to convince you to be ours and ours alone, my dear."

"A dozen? You, Morgan, know how to treat a girl right." She turned back to her monitor as it beeped again and typed furiously for a few seconds before glancing at him over her shoulder, peering over the rim of her glasses at him. "Show up next time with transfer paperwork and tiramisu and I'm all yours."

Derek couldn't stop himself from smiling even after Penelope was engrossed in her work again.

He had some favors he could cash in and he knew he could talk Aaron and Jason into cashing in a few of theirs. She was ready and willing and had already proven herself more than able. They needed her and what's more, Derek found himself really looking forward to working with her.

He nodded, more to himself, as he watched her working her magic on the machines.

"Count on it, baby girl. Count on it."

Yes, it's that time of year again: end of year fic finishing!

I polished off a Supernatural/The Unit crossover from 2006 earlier today (Mack/Dean!) and had enough juice left to finish this old partial fic from March of 2007. I had written and published Beginnings earlier that month and so jumped right into a sequel only to have it stall hard after a few hundred words. /headdesk/ But I signed up for it this month at ficfinishing and voila! Fic finished!

This one isn't as long as Beginnings, but a) I wanted it over b) making it long would pretty much ensure I'd not get it done any time soon (as proven by how aged it is now) and c) if I finished and posted this it might energize me into writing several short flash fic sequels in this universe in place of what might have been a longer fic here. (I admit I'm not sure. Past making them meet I don't remember what I had planned for this - whether they actually would go to the dinner or not or just talk about it.)

I confess the dialogue was a bit difficult here as I kept second guessing what they'd actually say to each other this early on, but when I reread the end of Beginnings I realized they'd already fallen into a fairly strong pattern of banter and pet names as it was so I had to rewrite this. If it's a bit uneven, blame the two years plus since I wrote the last one.

That's my story, at least. /grins/

It's a perfect face to face meeting. He is shocked at what he sees and she is non-pulsed. I bet she hacked to get a peak at his photo. A dinner fic maybe the start of their friendship. (Just have to feed your bunnies.)

LOL Thanks!

I figured she pulled up his personnel record when she was working with him before in Beginnings to find out his age and health/fitness level so she could better advise him on the physical challenges of the route she was taking him on to get him to safety. I mean, you wouldn't tell someone like Reid to jump with his bum knee, right?

(Although now it's Shemar with a screwed up leg so there's your irony! /grins/)

Thank you so much! I may be an irregular CM fic poster, but I do have quite a bit in my back catalog, much of it M&G oriented. I prefer their relationship in canon, but I do every once in a while jump in and write them as a proper pairing.

I have a Lucky/Penelope arc oriented M&G fic coming up, hopefully later this month, called In Between Days so keep an eye out!

Thanks for giving me a chance as a CM author. I'm glad you're enjoying the fic.

Thanks! I rather like this better than what little they gave us in canon. /grins/

Thank you! It's nice to imagine their easy banter was pretty much from the get go. :-)

Thank you! I was so sure back then this would be a long universe for me. I guess the muse had other ideas. /sigh/

That was a perfect cap to Beginnings!U give such good Morgan/Garcia banter. :) Of course Morgan wooed her over to the BAU with flirting, goddess appreciation, and tiramisu. This is canon. At least in my brain.....
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on October 23rd, 2009 11:03 pm (UTC)
Hee! Yeah, I much prefer this to what we got in canon. As a techie, I'd say I've been more than once influenced by sweets. /grins/

Glad you enjoyed this!

Oh, j'aime beaucoup!!!

I think it captures the characters perfectly! I don't follow Criminal Minds too closely, but these two are wonderful!

I loved it. :) You write their characters so well, it's completely believable! I can just picture them starting out like that.
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on October 24th, 2009 07:00 am (UTC)
Thank you! They're a joy to write when they're bantering and since I've been watching the show in syndication I've kind of rediscovered that. (The show hasn't had them bantering regularly since Penelope. /cries/)

I've noticed that too, and I definitely miss it. Their bantering is probably my favourite thing about the show.

Mine too, though Reid being his genius self is an awful close second. :-)

That was amazing. They were so in character I could hear their voices in my head. I love the fact you had Morgan note that she was dressing oddly and getting away with it. I'd had a thought or two about that detail, but never had a chance to address it or rant about it.

The banter is so easy and so humorous. Their interactions in this fic as just as good, if not better, then canon. You're Garcia comes off as the confident, self assured woman she should be.

Everything is so outstanding and I could spend days praising it, but I shalln't take up your time mam. ^^ Great job.
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on October 27th, 2009 03:42 am (UTC)
Wow, thank you so much! I'm thrilled that you felt that I did a good job compared to canon. I adore their banter so much that I can't keep myself from trying to duplicate it. :-)

Thank you so much for this lovely comment!

Thank you! Her voice is delicious to write; she's got great humor. Their banter is top notch and I just hope to do it justice.
