The Mentalist Fic: A Man of Many Talents
Posted to mentalistfic

Title: A Man of Many Talents
Pairing/Characters: Patrick, Teresa, Wayne, Grace, Kimball, OC
Rating: PG13
Spoilers: Pilot
Summary: People tend to forget that Patrick used to be a father
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

"Your hair looks pretty like that," Wayne said to Grace, gesturing to the elaborate braid her long red hair had been done up in with the hand that wasn't holding his coffee - just a donut.

"Thanks!" she replied, pausing from her typing long enough to flash him a bright smile. "It's called a French braid. Jane did it for me."

Wayne stopped short, blinking at her. "Jane, as in our Jane? Patrick Jane? A guy braided your hair?"

"Yeah, and he did a great job!" Grace preened, patting it carefully. "I could never manage it myself, but it's perfect: not too loose and not too tight."

As Kimball walked by, Wayne tapped him on the arm, pointing to have him look at Grace. "Hey Cho, Jane braided her hair for her."

Kimball gave it a brief glance then went ahead and sat at his desk. "Looks like he did a good job."

"Yeah, but he's a guy!" Wayne protested at Kimball's nonchalance.

"What's the matter, Rigsby?" Teresa said behind him, eyeing him when he whipped around to face his unexpected boss. "Are you too sexist to believe a man can't braid hair? Because it's not too far a leap from a woman can't carry a gun."

"No, ma'am," Wayne said, putting his hands up in surrender. "Not saying that at all. You and Van Pelt are more than worthy to be armed and," he swallowed hard, "dangerous."

"Good, now that we've got that straightened out…"' Teresa looked around, frowning at the empty couch where their consultant normally lounged and traded quips with them. "Where's Jane?"

Two rooms over, where families of witnesses waited while their loved ones were being questioned, Patrick sat French braiding the hair of a seven year old girl as the eleven year old brother who was supposed to be watching her stared at a magazine.

"Braiding is really quite simple," he told her, finishing off the braid. "It just takes practice to get it right. Try doing it each night before bed so you don't care how it looks and when you finally get good enough that you like it, you can do it in the morning and wear your hair to school like this."

He tied the braid off with an elastic and pointed her to the reflective glass to check her reflection.

"I like it!" she exclaimed, clearly delighted as she ran her tiny fingers over it in wonder. "It's pretty!"

Teresa watched as Patrick gazed at the little girl, knowing who it was he really saw and knowing where he had to have learned how to braid a girl's hair.

This ficlet was written for last year's Holiday Gifts for my F-list prompt from theoriginalspy. It turned out so long - and I kind of liked it - so I decided to publish it for real.

Yes, I suck for waiting until December to fulfill fic requests from *last* December, but at least I am filling them!

Thank you! I was worried about marrying humor and bittersweet, but I figured that kind of matches Jane to a T, you know?

Aw, so cute! I love it, Emma. Poor Jane.

I love your Rigsby, too, too...just perfect.

Hey there! Nice to see you!

Rigsby was fun to try to write. Jane, in his serious moments, just breaks my heart. I don't know why I don't write more Mentalist fic. /scratches head/

Thanks for popping by to read this!

How very horribly bittersweet. But also, just how amusing is the image of Jane plaiting Grace's hair?! I wonder if she asked, or if he just did it.

That's what I was going for - like the show, part humor and part bittersweet.

I imagine she was complaining about her hair or putting it up in a ponytail and he offered, which is to say he offered the Jane way which is to say it out loud as he starts doing it. ;-)

oh that was good!

Your Rigsby is just perfect... pointing with the donut and all. hahaha. Nice.

Poor Jane. You're right... people DO forget he was a father. *sighs* Sad. Beautiful but sad. Well done.
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on December 4th, 2009 11:28 pm (UTC)
Hee! Thanks!

I went back and added in the donut after I typed that sentence and it fit beautifully. I know the actor's lost weight since the start (and I miss him being a big man) but we still have lovely canon of Rigsby's eating habits to snark over. /grins/

Jane is a lovely tragi-comic hero. I know the show is more about the humor, but the underlying tragedy and his bittersweetness makes him so endearing to me. SB does a great job with that.

This is lovely, and it makes me want to hug Patrick Jane (knowing just enough about the show to know what happened to his daughter).
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on December 4th, 2009 11:29 pm (UTC)
Jane is definitely in need of many hugs. He hides his pain behind a mask of humor but it's not possible for a father like him to go a single day without missing his daughter. /sniff/

My heart, it is broken. ;_;

Aww... /frowns/ /hands over tissues/

You've got the perfect icon though. Jane's all about hiding his tragedy with a mask of comedy.

You are an evil, evil woman. I have been trying very hard not to read Mentalist fan fiction, I really don't need another community. And then you paste this brilliant piece. Why?
