Numb3rs Fic: The Last Day
Written for numb3rs100 Challenge #241 – Plane

Title: The Last Day
Pairing/Characters: Don/Charlie, OCs
Rating: R
Word Count: 300
Spoilers: None
Summary: An ordinary plane trip goes horribly wrong
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

Don holds Charlie's hand as the plane takes off. Charlie knows the equations that make jets aerodynamic, yet his faith in physics fails each time he takes flight.

"These things fly and land thousands of times a day." Don ducks down to catch Charlie's eye. "Nothing to worry about."

Charlie gnaws at his lower lip. "I know."

They're at 25,000 feet when the engine blows. Black smoke pummels the windows as panicked cries ricochet around the crowded cabin. The plane drops, veers, then rights; the ground looms closer as they break the cloud cover. The pilot shouts on the P.A. as oxygen masks drop to block shocked faces.

"Prepare for emergency landing!"

Don holds Charlie tight as the plane plummets from the sky. Two engines down now, they're a fireball and they both know the statistics for a crash from this height.

"Hang on tight, okay buddy?" Don's gaze is filled with every emotion he struggles to show any other time. "No matter what happens, you know I love you."

Charlie lets the tears flow freely. "I love you too."

They're at 5,000 feet when they reach an airport. Vibrating fuselage feels like it will shake apart before they can land. The impact slams, jolts, then scrapes; metal shreds as they screech down the runway. They've barely stopped when the crew throws open the emergency doors.

"Everybody evacuate now!"

Don holds Charlie steady for the slide inside. Then they're frantic and clutching each other again, desperate to ground themselves in the union they feared would be severed forever.

"I never knew how much I needed you." Don's voice is haunted by the memory of the last day. "I never realized losing you would be like losing a piece of myself."

Charlie breathes two words in his brother's ear. "I knew."

I was supposed to publish something else today, but when I decided to push it back I figured I should move something else into today's slot since December's going to be one of those rare post every day months for me as I attempt to get out as much fic as possible by year's end.

I had zero ideas for this prompt so I lured my slashwife melissima and her braintwin t_vo0810 into a Gmail group chat to ask them what they'd like me to write for the Plane prompt. Their consensus opinion (which was oddly hard to come by for the braintwins for once) was that I should write an emergency landing fic with Don/Charlie as the pairing. I shared some early drafts with them before sending T off to bed and making Mel babysit the final version so I could get it out before we went off to sleep for the night.

If you read this and think ABABA, then you too might be a poet or songwriter! /grins/ I couldn't help myself. I love highly structured drabbles to the point of structuring them well past the point where anyone but me will know or notice. I even lined up the sentences in the B sections about halfway through to better align them in structure and length. Yes, I am like that. I can deal with being eccentric, especially at 1AM. ;-)

The title comes from Sinead O'Connor's song The Last Day of Our Acquaintance, a heartbreakingly sad song that has the lyric "you used to hold my hand when the plane took off" in it. /sniff/

Very special thanks to betas melissima and t_vo0810 for their assistance with this fic.

Yay! Then it was worth all the rewrites it took to get it right. /beams/ Thank you, hon!

Emma, emma, emma. Gorgeous. How you spin your words from a chat idea into something gorgeous while i slumbered in dreamland is nothing short of amazing. You totally nailed the ending. It's exactly as it should be now.

And ABABA? /snort/- even at 1AM you find ways to amuse that muse of yours. Nothing short of impressive, my dear.

Hee! Thank you for the bunny, sweets! I honestly had nothing to write until I got you guys to help me. :-)

Now you see how much things can change for the better in rewriting. It gives me faith that even meh first drafts can achieve something far loftier with some hard work and time.

I'd hoped you'd like it! I published it late thinking that not many people would see it, but was comforted by the idea that you would and that would make it worth it. /hugs/
