Title: The Eighth Night (Sequel to A Day in the Life)
Series/Universe: Safe Harbor
Pairing/Characters: Charlie/Billy, Alan, OCs
Rating: PG13
Spoilers: Man Hunt
Summary: On the final night of Hanukkah Billy gives Charlie a gift meant to last a lifetime
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

The Craftsman was aglow, filled with festive signs of the season: a fire was lit in the inglenook fireplace, candle tapers burned down low on the dining room table and twinkling white lights blinked on the Christmas tree, glinting against the silver menorah.

A sleepy Rocio yawned in his mother's arms as they said their goodnights at the door to the breezeway leading to Casa Rojo. Elena leaned against Alan, eyes at half mast, clearly fighting off slumber as well.

Hugs and kisses were exchanged, final 'Happy Hanukkah' wishes and then Charlie and Billy stood - arms around each other - watching as the other half of their family headed back to their house next door.

The eighth night of Hanukkah had been perfect - idyllic even.

Now Billy planned to make it a night Charlie would never forget.

"The kids seemed to enjoy Hanukkah this year," Charlie mused, fishing the candle snuffer out of the sideboard drawer. "I mean their first year they were full of questions - why do we have to wait for sundown, why is that one candle higher up than all of the others, why nine candles when there are eight nights - but this time they just seemed to look forward to lighting the menorah, the traditional food, my Dad's stories…"

He went to snuff out one of the dining room table candles, but Billy halted him with a hand on his arm.

"Leave them - for now." He beckoned, tugging on Charlie's arm. "Come sit with me for a little while."

"Okay," Charlie agreed with a smile. Billy led him over to the inglenook and installed him in one of the old Stickley chairs as he sat on the rug at Charlie's feet. "This is nice… I forget how nice it is to have a fire in the fireplace. We don't do it often enough."

Billy kept hold of Charlie's hand, his thumb swiping across the back of it as he sat silent for a moment.

"Yeah," he agreed, almost absentmindedly.

"Everything all right?" Charlie asked, a hint of concern in his tone.

"Everything's perfect," Billy said thoughtfully. "So perfect sometimes I'm sure I'm going to wake up in some crappy motel in Dubuque on a hunt and discover it was all a dream."

"Well, if it was a dream would we have gotten a flat tire half way up Mount Wilson on the night the Perseids meteor shower was at its peak?" Charlie teased. "Because a dream would have definitely given us front row seats for that show instead of mud and a tow truck."

Billy chuckled, shaking his head. "You're something else…" His hand tightened on Charlie's as he took a deep breath. "You know, a little over a year ago? I almost lost you."

Charlie's hand tightened in response. Neither of them had gotten over the fright of the attempt on Charlie's life, both unable to forget how close it had been.

"I know," Charlie whispered.

"And a little later, I almost lost you again when I let you go back to California without me." Billy pressed Charlie's hand to his face, closing his eyes as he turned into his touch. "Twice I almost lost you… And I know - I know - I don't want to risk a third time. I want to do whatever I can to keep you with me - always."

"You have me," Charlie assured him, cupping Billy's face in his palm.

Billy looked up at him, blue eyes clear and determined. "And you have me. I want you to know for sure that I'll always be there. I want you to know that wherever your life takes you, I'll follow. I want to tell everyone I know that I love you. I want to be there to watch your hair turn grey. I want your face to be the last thing I see when I take my final breath."

"Billy…" Charlie's breath hitched, his emotions clear on his expressive face.

Billy continued, taking both of Charlie's hands in his own and holding them tight as he knelt on the carpet in front of the man he loved.

"I want to stand up in front of all our friends and family and pledge my life to you. I want all of it: ceremony, vows, rings, so that there can be no doubt that I love you and I will love you, till death do us part. And if you want that too…"

"Yes!" Charlie blurted out, all but throwing himself at Billy in his rush to embrace him. They tumbled to the rug as Charlie peppered Billy with ecstatic kisses, arms avidly wrapping around each other as their joy overwhelmed them.

When they finally broke for air, Billy hovered above Charlie, gazing down at his face, lit by the golden light of the fire. Love swelled in his chest and he felt breathless, speechless, overcome with emotion.

Charlie beamed up at him, his expression one of wonder and awe.

"Did you really just propose to me?" he asked, marveling.

"Yes, I believe I did," Billy replied with a little smirk.

"Wow…" Charlie gazed up at him, smiling so brightly Billy couldn't help but share his glee.

"But you kind of interrupted it with your answer," Billy admitted playfully. "Though don't get me wrong - I'm definitely thrilled the answer is yes."

"Like it would be anything else," Charlie scoffed, giving him a mock shove. "So what did I miss in this I assume well rehearsed monologue?"

"Just the last part…" Billy pulled away slightly to retrieve a box from behind the fireplace tools. Coming back to hover over Charlie as he lay on the rug, he put the box on Charlie's chest. "Open it."

Charlie bit his lip and cracked open the small black jewelry box.

He gasped in delighted surprise when he revealed the contents: two gold wedding bands, both with the same engraving: the symbol for infinity.

"Can we wear them on our right hands until the ceremony and then switch them to our left?" Charlie asked, looking hopeful.

"If it would make you happy, sure." Billy pulled out the smaller of the two rings as they sat up and Billy went to put it on Charlie's outstretched hand only to find it trembling. "This ring is my promise to you," he said, holding Charlie's hand still for him. "Only you - forever." He slid it on Charlie's right ring finger then kissed the palm of his hand before letting him go so Charlie could gaze at the ring.

"I love it. It's perfect." Charlie took the other ring out of the box and set the box aside. He took Billy's right hand in his and this time his hands were steady. "This ring is my promise to you too. Only you - forever." He slipped it on then pulled Billy in for a tender loving kiss.

Wrapped in each other, Billy lowered them back to the rug and they lay in each other's arms, warmed by the fire and by their love for each other.

"You know," Charlie said hesitantly. "When…" He lowered his eyes, unable to finish the sentence. "I saw my life pass before my eyes - my past that is. They say that happens."

"Shh…" Billy soothed. "Don't think about that anymore."

"No, no," Charlie hastened to explain. "What I wanted to say was when you asked me, I saw my life pass before my eyes again. Only this time it was my future - our future. I saw us growing old together. I saw Rocio and Elena as adults with families of their own, I saw you and Don retire from the Bureau, I saw Magda remarried…" He trailed off, shaking his head. "I saw it and I was happy in it." He took Billy's face in his hands and pressed an ardent kiss to his lips. "You make me happy. I love you and I want to be with you, like you said, til death do us part."

Billy felt a fresh swell of joy well up in him and he covered Charlie's mouth with his own in a passionate kiss, sinking into it as their hands joined together - rings both shining in the firelight.

"Is this the part where I get to call everyone I know and tell them the wonderful news?" Charlie whispered as their lips brushed with the promise of more kisses to come - a lifetime full of them.

"Tomorrow," Billy told him, gazing at him reverently as he threaded his fingers into his lover's curls. "Tonight is for us to make into a memory."

Surprise! Even more Harborverse!

Bet you didn't think I'd come up with it this fast! ;-)

I wanted to get this out while it was still actually Hanukkah so Happy Hanukkah all!

So in the list of proposal, wedding, honeymoon and porn fic, I get to check proposal fic off the SHH list. /grins/

Obligatory Wikipedia links: Yes, Mount Wilson is near Pasadena and it has an observatory and yes, the Perseids meteor shower is real and would have happened in the fall so the timing works.

Repeating this info because now it's even more relevant! uld_numb3rs chose the Harborverse for today's entry in her fanwork Advent Calendar! Go check it out by clicking on the 17 on her post. I was excited about it when I had new Harborverse fic for yesterday so I'm doubly excited that there's Harborverse fic on the same day as well!

Very special thanks to betas t_vo0810 and melissima for their assistance with this fic.

Aww, that was just perfect sweetie. The only problem with this verse is that I want to read everything. I want to read Charlie telling Don and Alan, seeing Magda and the kids squee with happiness, the wedding, the honeymoon, the whole five years down the line still gloriously in love fic:) And you mention porn being on the list? *coughs* wouldn't mind reading that either *grins*....

Loved it ♥

Will there be any more to this series? Maybe Don or Alan getting involved with someone, or anniversaries?

Hello! And sorry for the late response. I just found this email mislabeled so it didn't get answered. (Though I admit I suck at replying to my comments, what with a full load at uni and so little time to write period.)

Yes, there is more planned - at least the wedding itself. I hope for more, but that's what's up next, but since it's such a big deal it's daunting!

Any thoughts as to what you'd like to see, feel free to share. My muse tends to ignore me and give fic to third party requests. Go figure. LOL

Thanks for reading!
