Title: The Man That Was
Pairing/Characters: Nathan
Rating: PG13
Spoilers: Genesis
Summary: Prompt - Shade
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

Nathan stares at the mirror; he doesn't recognize the man he's become.

Some part of him, some tiny glimmer, remembers that he believed going into politics would allow him to make real change in the world.

There's been a change all right - in him.

He's pasted on a smile for people he loathes because they have money he needs them to donate for his campaign, he's compromised his ethics to improve his chances of winning special interest group votes and he's let his mother and his advisors direct him when he used to be his own man.

His wife's become a fashionable appendage, his children - photo opportunities.

Nathan's gone from fighting the good fight in the military and in the courtroom to fighting the polls. It feels shallow, empty, like his bright rising star has fallen under a shadow, shaded by his ambition when it should have been allowed to burn bright and hot, damn the consequences.

Mostly he misses being someone his brother Peter could look up to.

Peter used to look at him like a hero, worshipping his big brother, eyes filled with love.

Now Nathan can't meet his brother's eyes. He has to pretend he's too busy for Peter because he's afraid when he looks - really looks - it will be worse than looking in the mirror.

He already hates the man he sees there.

He's not sure he could take it if he sees that same loathing in Peter's eyes.

I hadn't published any Heroes fic for this year and I had an open day so I indulged in some Season 1 Nathan in a fit of nostalgia. I haven't watched the show for ages (so please don't spoil me), but I did hear Nathan's gone so let this be a bit of an epitaph for him as it may well be my last Heroes fic ever. /sniff/
