Numb3rs Fic: Fog (The Golden Gate Bridge Remix)
Written for numb3rs100 Holiday Drabble Remixathon - Remix of Fog by jelsemium/Challenge #17 – In Another World

Title: Fog (The Golden Gate Bridge Remix)
Pairing/Characters: Larry, Charlie
Rating: PG
Word Count: 300
Spoilers: None
Summary: The fog begins to fog Larry's thoughts
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

The fog, as white as it was, didn't soothe Larry as it enveloped him on his cross-campus journey. It clung close, seeming to seep through his skin with chill fingers - his decalcified bones unable to ward off its invasive touch.

The road behind him seemed to fade away, the sounds of passing cars muffled in the dense air. Buildings rose up out of nowhere and dissolved into nothingness as he passed, leaving the landscape an almost temporal air. Students appeared and disappeared, passing him like wraiths in the clouds, soundless as they vanished. He forced himself to watch his footsteps, to tune his ear for his own footfall lest he become spectral himself.

Wondering as he wandered, Larry's mind skittered through all the philosophies he'd learned in his life, using them to question his own existence at that moment. If all around him was ephemeral, as inconsequential as the vapors swirling around him, was he not also ethereal?

He passed through the open doorway to the Math building and into Charlie's office distracted, his mind focused on sensing the forces that bound the atoms of his body together, keeping them from flinging out into space and discorporating his rather minimal mass into the ether.

Charlie's hand came down on his shoulder in greeting and suddenly Larry felt solid again, real, grounded.

Heat flowed into him, the chill receded and he felt his facial muscles move into an answering smile: action and reaction, matter in motion, the physics of physicality confirmed.

"What can I do for you?" Charlie asked with a bright sunny smile.

Larry just stood there, enjoying the feel of terra firma beneath his sneakers and the warm touch of a living breathing human being connecting him to reality again.

"I believe you already did it."

This fic was written for the Holiday Drabble Remixathon at numb3rs100. The original author was jelsemium whose fic I remixed was Fog.

I really liked the feel of the original piece and while I knew it wasn't within my personal style to capture that sort of ethereal nature, I decided I wanted to try anyway. I still like Jels' version better, but it was fun remixing it, for sure.

The funky remix title (as remixthedrabble calls the part in the parentheses) comes from the icon Jels used to post the fic. It's a shot of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge in the fog. I really liked it so I stole it for my fic remix title.

Hope you like the remix Jels and thanks for all your lovely fic at N100 over the years!

Very special thanks to beta melissima for her assistance with this fic.

Loved both yours and Jels' version of this.

Very... other-worldly, very Larry. LOL. :)

This is wonderful! I like it much better than my version. This is much more lyrical and evocative of the other wordly feeling I was trying to convey. I especially loved Larry focusing on the atomic bonds that were holding his body together.

Well done! And thanks! Fog was the drabble I was most hoping someone would remix!
