White Collar Fic: Just a Bottle
Written for melissima's 2010 Anti-Valentine Challenge

Title: Just a Bottle
Pairing/Characters: Neal/Kate
Rating: PG
Spoilers: Pilot
Summary: Neal finds the bottle and gives up hope
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

He'd known as soon as he'd seen the place was cleared out, standing in the doorway, his heart sinking in his chest with a sickening lurch. To be fair he'd known in prison, but that niggling doubt - call it hope, call it hubris - that she might not have meant it, that she'd still be there was enough for him to risk it all.

But this? Leaving the bottle behind? Their bottle?

Neal sank down, back against the support beam, staring at the wine bottle in his hand in disbelief.

She didn't take it. The one thing that signified their relationship, their love, and she'd left it behind as if it were trash - just a bottle.

Worse, she'd left it behind for him to find, as proof she was serious and it really was over. His other hand rubbed across his chest in an almost unconscious response to the pain within. No one else had ever gotten so close to him; no one else had the power to hurt him like Kate did.

He just never thought she'd do it.

She'd waited for him - for over three years - so he couldn't believe she'd give up on him now when they were so close to being reunited.

He let his head fall back against the beam.

He could hear footsteps approaching.

That would be Peter. Peter had caught him the first time. It would be Peter again.

He should jump up, run, hide, anything to avoid going back to prison where his sentence was sure to be extended for his escape.

But Neal couldn't seem to move, couldn't seem to care to move.

Kate was gone, really gone.

So he sat and waited for Peter to come.

There was nothing left for him on the outside anyway.

New Fandom!

(And here I thought Warehouse 13 would beat White Collar to become my 21st fandom! Then again, I thought I'd beat Mel to writing W13 so what do I know? Hehehe)

This was written for melissima's 2010 Anti-Valentine's Challenge. I had wanted to write my normal Numb3rs In Time of Need Series, but I spent weeks unable to come up with a decent bunny for it. Once I allowed myself to consider other fandoms within 2 minutes I had the perfect White Collar bunny: pining Neal FTW!

A note to anyone who wonders A) what the end of story symbol is supposed to be or B) about why I have different ones for each fandom. (Actually I have different chapter separators too, but they're not as interesting as the end of story ones normally.) The answer to A is that it's supposed to look like the half on handcuffs that Neal wears in the promo picture. As to B? I started doing it with Numb3rs because it was fun (the = and + signs for a math show? Bien sur!) and since it didn't work with my second fandom, Supernatural, I gave them a different end of story symbol. After that it became a fun challenge to come up with ones that related to the fandom (Like <9> for Doctor Who since I like Nine best or |T| for Torchwood on the rift) so while I'm absolved from coming up with a chapter separator just yet for White Collar, the handcuffs suit me (and Neal, who is so damn pretty - anyone remember Tru Calling?) just fine.

NEAL. I really do need to fic White Collar very soon. (And I so knew immediately what the ending symbol was, hee!)

SyFy was showing a marathon of Tru Calling the other day and yummy Eliza and Matt make a good pair. I'm going to have to Netflix the series or something.

Anyway, really lovely lead up to Peter catching Neal. Can't wait to see you write more!

I missed Tru Calling? ARGH! /tears out hair/ /rends garments/

I miss so much good stuff by not watching the TV Guide for what's coming up. Grr. /is annoyed/

Yes, you really do need to fic White Collar. Neal is too yummy, Peter is a great foil for him and the slash potential (and OT3) is bordering on epic proportions in the fandom. Srsly. Hollywood? Pay attention. These guys got it right. /nods/

Thanks for reading, hon. ♥

Oh, Neal! This made my heart bleed for him.

OMG, I can't believe we could be so lucky as to have you start writing in White Collar! ::jumps up and down::

Can I help? Would you like fic recs? Meta? Vid recs? Icons? Chocolate?

And, er, I liked your Neal introspective, here, too. *bg*

Well, at least he can rely on Peter not to redefine their relationship - although ouch. And it's a little extra sad to see how Neal understands Kate's gesture, the way she'd leave the bottle as a clear message to him, and yet not be prepared or braced at all for her having left.

::sniffles:: just beautiful...

Thanks, hon! And yay for us having yet another fandom in common!

P.S. Speaking of, did you see I had new Miracles fic? :-)

Pining and broken-hearted Neal = <3 :)
Thank you for the lovely fic - I like how you described his thought process.

He did look very shook up when Peter found him in canon!
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on May 16th, 2010 02:57 am (UTC)
Hey there! So you did come look! Sorry I don't have more, but I'm still getting my feet wet in the fandom.

And yeah, Neal really was in a bad way, else he would have made some effort to run. /kicks Kate for doing that to him/

Thanks for popping in to read this! :-)

Okay, just watched the pilot and am on board. Where are all the White collar fen hanging out?
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on May 30th, 2010 07:07 pm (UTC)
LOL Mel's slashchat? (Which is just starting right now. /is late/)

I don't do fandom for all the fandoms I fic so all I know is the WC LJ comm I posted to.

But welcome to the fandom! Isn't Neal tasty? Isn't Peter made of awesome? Oh say an you see the OT3? LOL
ladygray99ladygray99 on May 31st, 2010 03:23 am (UTC)
OT3 Peter/Neal/El all over the place. Still got a lot of N3 work to do but I'm going to be keeping my eye on WC
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on May 31st, 2010 03:28 am (UTC)
I've got 1400+ words of a new OT3 that I started writing during chat today: Neal and Peter and Elle at the dinner table after a catering tasting menu. Yum. Flirty goodness still to come, but definitely fun.

Cearesceares on May 31st, 2010 10:07 pm (UTC)
aww! Neal was like the woobiest thing ever in that scene. Clearly the WC were smart enough to make us fall for him there before they let him and us figure out what was going on.
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on May 31st, 2010 10:49 pm (UTC)
Yes! Who doesn't love a hot guy who's a die hard romantic AND a dedicated monogamist? Still, it was Matt Bomer who sold it. I think with anyone less talented it might have felt too forced or too schmaltzy. (Dare I say 'too Lifetime movie?' LOL)
Cearesceares on June 1st, 2010 12:02 am (UTC)
Yep. Matt Bomer is perfect as Neal. I was completely unfamiliar with him before White Collar but I see that he has done quite a few things. Apparently this was the role though.
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on June 1st, 2010 12:13 am (UTC)
I found him yummy in Tru Calling, but missed him in Traveler. But yes, this is clearly his breakout, tailor made like a Devore suit role. ;-)

Some guys, also, tend to be more appealing in their 30s than in their 20s. Not sure if it's the maturity or just growing into their looks as an adult, but it works for him, for sure.
Cearesceares on June 1st, 2010 01:16 am (UTC)
Tru Calling, Traveler and Chuck are all shows I almost watched but didn't and I swear I probably saw pics of him but other than a 'he's cute' he didn't register. Actually seeing him in motion on White Collar is what worked for me. Neal is so adorable. Hot and cute yeah, but character wise I just want to snuggle and smish him so kudos to Matt Bomer and the writers for taking a character that could have been smarmy or just very slick given his occupation and making him come across as vulnerable and open and almost innocent in his charm. Of course that's what makes him a brilliant con-man.
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on June 1st, 2010 01:27 am (UTC)

And yeah, I liked him in Tru Calling because he wasn't just a hot guy he felt real, with honest emotions. He's just a lot better as Neal. I saw him for like five seconds at the start of Chuck but other than how attractive he was it wasn't super memorable.

Damn, can't Season 2 come faster? I may have to have a rewatch party in the interim. /grins/

Oh wait! I'm behind on Leverage and Castle! Perfect way to bide my time until WC returns. /grins/
Cearesceares on June 1st, 2010 06:04 am (UTC)
All caught up with Leverage. Don't know if I should put Castle on my list or not. Network t.v. kind of scares me at this point.
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on June 1st, 2010 07:50 am (UTC)
It's Nathan Fillion!

Okay, listen here. Watch the pilot. Give him that much of a chance. If you don't like it? Then only 45 minutes invested. But if you like Leverage and White Collar (and even Warehouse 13) you might enjoy the snarky good fun of Castle too.

Give him a shot, for Joss' sake. ;-)
Cearesceares on June 1st, 2010 09:55 am (UTC)
I love Nathan. I've been a fan since One Life to Live, but I trust cable more than I trust network tv not to randomly cancel shows mid-season or leave them hanging with a cliff hanger and just never bring them back.

Does it have a strong story arc or is it cliffhangerish or can I just randomly enjoy the show without serious investment in the storyline?
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on June 1st, 2010 10:38 am (UTC)
It's very crime of the week so you can enjoy it pretty ad hoc if you like.

The main story arcs that happen over time are a) Castle, inspired by Kate, starts writing a new book series using a female detective as their protagonist "Nikki Heat", b) The unsolved case of Kate's mother's murder years ago (the only really serious/sad parts really and they are infrequent and c) the growing attraction between the two of them (very slow and mostly just banter)

Me? I LOVE the scenes with Rick Castle and his teenage daughter. The girl who plays Alexis ROCKS and they have awesome chemistry on screen. Lots of fun.

It got picked up for Fall so you should have more than one season at least. No Firefly syndrome. ;-)
hoosierbitchhoosierbitch on June 19th, 2010 03:06 pm (UTC)

I love this. Because, fact is, Neal absolutely could have kept running - but he saw the bottle, and sat down, and stayed there until Peter showed up. And you capture perfectly how absolutely devastated he must have been by Kate's departure.
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on June 19th, 2010 10:02 pm (UTC)
Thank you! I figure there had to be a war inside him - his natural instincts to always run from capture and the heavy listlessness that comes from despair and the latter won this time. /sniff/ Pauvre Neal!
