Numb3rs Fic: In Shreds
Written for numb3rs100 Challenge #253 – Shred

Title: In Shreds
Pairing/Characters: Billy, Ian
Rating: PG13
Word Count: 300
Spoilers: Sniper Zero, Man Hunt, Ultimatim
Summary: Their lives are in shreds and they feel as if they are alone in the world
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

'You've reached the voicemail of Assistant Director...'

'You've reached the Fugitive Recovery department. No one is available...'

'Hello, it's Agent Harlowe. I'm unable to answer my phone right now...'

Billy's thumb jabbed in frustration at the cell phone's call end button, cutting off yet another thwarted attempt to reach any human being who might give a crap about him.

He peered between the inconsequential drapes of the just off the highway motel he'd already forgotten the name of by the time they processed his credit card. The real world went on without him out there, a world where commuters with loosened ties walked through their front doors greeted by the aroma of homemade pot roast.

A friendly voice, he decided, dialing. That was what he needed - someone who hadn't forgotten about him.

'This is Agent Don Eppes. I'll be out of the office for two weeks for my honeymoon...'

Ian pulled the drapes closed in yet another off-season fake log cabin motel at the edge of a remote forest filled with trees, wildlife and one elusive criminal.

Thanks to his prison stunt his once impressive career was in shreds. He wondered if the Director got all the charges dismissed only because Ian was such a lethal weapon.

He checked his cell phone: no messages. No one had called him in days. He was starting to wonder if he was out here all alone, no one willing to be tainted by contact with him.

He paged through his cell phone contacts, hoping for a friendly voice.

Nikki? Last time they'd talked she'd given him a piece of her mind.

Don? No, the last person he'd trusted was the last person who'd want to hear from him after what happened with Colby.

Ian put the phone down. There wasn't anyone left.

Title and inspiration from The Chameleons In Shreds.

I confess this fic didn't turn out anywhere as good as I'd hoped (despite a ~500 word first draft) and nowhere near as good as the inspiration from the song's lyrics warranted.

Very special thanks to beta t_vo0810 for her assistance with this fic.

Thanks. I just wish I'd done better with it, but even I have the same deadline as everyone else when it comes to getting the N100 current prompt in while it's still current. ;-)

Sorry to hear that. It sucks to know what this feels like and I certainly wrote from experience on this one.

Thanks for taking the time to read and comment. I appreciate it more than I can express.

The last line of Billy's part and the last line of Ian's....::heart clench::
I really hope someone calls them back :(

Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on March 9th, 2010 07:51 am (UTC)
Oh, your icon! It kind of breaks my heart in the context of this fic! I'm torn between making them find each other and thwapping Don for a) not telling Billy he was getting married and b) not forgiving Ian because it's not like Don hasn't bent the rules to get what he wanted.

Thanks for taking the time to read and comment! I was sure no one would notice this fic, I put it up so late at night, but I am glad it got read even if I wasn't thrilled with how I did on it.

Just found this fic so... forgive me for not commenting earlier.

Hhhmmm... If Emma's up for it... anyone interested in some type of sequel? Have a lot on my plate but I can't stand hurt without comfort /chuckle.

If Em's up for it, (Emma) will have to contact me though :)
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on April 1st, 2010 12:52 am (UTC)
How about I try writing some new H/C fic instead of continue this one? I'm ready to let this one go for more hopeful ventures.
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on April 1st, 2010 12:57 am (UTC)
Ooh! Or better yet? Go prompt it at n3rs_commentfic. If it doesn't fit in with the current week's theme just wait until the weekend free for all and post it then to get it written.
Tamannaswingandswirl on March 9th, 2010 08:20 am (UTC)
Oh boys.

You made me tear up with this, Emma. I've been in that place where it feels like no one in the world gives a damn about you and you captured the sheer awfulness of it very well.

Brava. (now make it better, pwease?)
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on March 9th, 2010 08:27 am (UTC)
Aww! /hugs you/ I hope you never feel that way again, sweetie!

You can pretend there's a sequel where Ian comes down off his high horse and calls Billy only to find he's only two counties over. They talk, they hook up for dinner and after that they're speeddialing whenever they feel the need to kvetch/bond/experience contact with another human being.

The invite to Don's wedding shows up after getting mangled in the mail, Ian and Don mend fences and all is good when they next come to LA and Don apologizes for falling out of contact with them both as he toasts them with a beer bottle.

The (Happy) End.

Thanks, hon. I hope I never do either, and having awesome people like you in my life lower the odds significantly. *hugs back*

Yay! *dances* I am happy again. Especially at the thought of Ian/Billy. RAWR.

(oh, btw, did you see my new Ian/Colby fic? I was thinking of you when I wrote it, since you're like half the reason I have a reasonably IC Ian voice...)
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on March 9th, 2010 08:49 am (UTC)
I saw, but I've kind of not been reading (or writing much) since I still have that nasty headache from hitting my head. (I think my laptop misses me. It's usually on all the time along with my desktop, but I've not been online very much as of late. /frowns/)

I will read it and I have every faith that it will be wonderful including your Ian voice. You care and that's what makes it good. People who don't care just put out any old Ian and figure he's flexible enough, but you want him to resonate so you try harder. That's more than enough for me to enjoy it. :-)

And ditto on having you in my life, hon. I really look forward to chats because Mel has so many cool and friendly people hanging out there now it really reminds me of why fandom is such an awesome place for making friends. ♥

*hugs the Emma* Oh, I'm sorry to hear that, hon. Get better soon! *sends Andy with cold compresses and aspirin*

*blush* Thank you so much! That's very sweet of you. I love the characters so it feels like a disservice to them if I don't do the best I can, you know?

*♥s back* Slaschat's one of my favourite parts of fandom; I hope it continues, regardless of whether we get a seventh season- there are just too many cool people there. *g*

What are you doing up so late? *sends Andy back with warm milk so he can shoo you off to bed* Sweet dreams, sleep tight, and may the plot bunnies bite! *g*

Which new fic hun?
ladygray99ladygray99 on March 9th, 2010 11:08 am (UTC)
Ouch on both parts. Poor boys. They both need love from someone.
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on March 10th, 2010 08:13 am (UTC)
They do. I was rather hoping from each other or Don, but angst and loneliness won out in the end. /sigh/
ladygray99ladygray99 on March 10th, 2010 08:52 am (UTC)
Tell me about it.
fyreflyfyrefly101 on March 9th, 2010 01:40 pm (UTC)
Ouch and ouch again. I think for me, Billy's resonates all the more, because FR, whilst necessitating independence, doesn't require cutting off from human contact, and I can see it burning Billy all the more. Ian is that much more of a lone wolf, that I can sort of see him knowing how to occupy himself, until someone does contact him.

Which is not to say that it doesn't hurt like hell, to hope that someone out there will make contact and every time, getting nothing. It's like the entire world rejects them.

Got their numbers? I'd definitely call them and make sure they're ok :)
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on March 10th, 2010 08:15 am (UTC)
Hee! I wish. They both could use a friendly voice on the phone even if Ian will blame the lousy cell service for not answering right away. /grins/

I think Ian's content being a lone wolf because it's his choice to be one. When he's one because he's persona non grata to his friends? That's got to sting. So yeah, I feel bad for both of them, thus all the work I did to split this fic in two and not just write Billy or Ian (because I could certainly have filled up 300 words for each of them given that my first draft was around 500!).
uld_numb3rsuld_numb3rs on March 9th, 2010 07:21 pm (UTC)
*Hug Ian and Billy*
It's a beautiful work!
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on March 10th, 2010 08:16 am (UTC)
Thank you!

They both need hugs and are just the kind of men who wouldn't ask for them. Gah.
Ayesha: me sortabrowngirl on March 11th, 2010 02:12 am (UTC)
*heart breaks for them* Oh, I want them to somehow get drunk together and share a night of human connection.
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on March 11th, 2010 03:06 am (UTC)
I want them to give each other the gift of human connection, but preferably sans alcohol.

/hugs you/
cat_13145cat_13145 on March 28th, 2010 08:27 pm (UTC)
Hugs Ian and colby, poor guys.
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on April 1st, 2010 12:54 am (UTC)
Ian's in serious need of a hug, but I'm pretty sure David took good care of Colby post-Ultimatim.

And I'm absolutely sure my slashwife would volunteer to go console/hug Billy. ;-)
lilacs_roseslilacs_roses on April 1st, 2010 12:43 am (UTC)
Nicely done Em, but I already mentioned somewhere below that I can't handle hurt without comfort :( But still, nicely done.

... I guess I'm lost -- unless you were referring to "Ultimatum" -- about the Colby comment. Care to explain?

Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on April 1st, 2010 12:50 am (UTC)
Sorry! As much H/C as I do, I do occasionally do straight up angst, especially in drabbles where there is far less time to get to the comfort stage. Different strokes as they say.

Yes, Ultimatim is in the spoilers line because Ian's referring to what he did to Colby in it.
