Numb3rs Fic: A Reunion of Sorts
Written for numb3rs100 Challenge #257 – Roll

Title: A Reunion of Sorts
Pairing/Characters: Charlie, Don, Ian, Oswald, Matt, Colby
Rating: PG13
Word Count: 300
Spoilers: Seasons 1-6
Summary: It's been years since they all worked a case together in person in LA
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

"Charlie!" Oswald's face lit up as he and Matt caught sight of Charlie striding across the bullpen. "I'll be damned!"

"Hey guys." Charlie headed towards his protege, accepting a warm embrace and returning a welcoming wave from Matt.

"When did you fly in?" Oswald asked.

"Last night," Charlie answered. "Or morning..." He shook his head. "Nothing like the time difference between England and California to throw you off." He cocked his head to Matt, addressing him with a grin. "Oswald been giving you a hard time since he got his doctorate?"

"Oh yeah," Matt deadpanned. "Everywhere we go it's Dr. Kittner this, Dr. Kittner that."

"So where is my brother, Mister Assistant Director?" Charlie asked, looking around.

"He went to pick up the rest of the cavalry at the airport," Matt said, gesturing to the elevators as Don exited one, in conversation with Ian who was rolling along by his side in his wheelchair.

"Ian! Good to see you, man!" Charlie shook Ian's hand warmly, both men clearly pleased at the reunion.

"Professor! How are Amita and the kids?"

"The twins just turned three and Amita's due again in July."

"Congratulations! You two are going to fill the world with genius kids aren't you?" Ian smirked.

"He's doing his part," Don teased, slinging an arm around his brother and giving him an affectionate shake. "Just don't ask about baby pictures!"

"Oh, like you wouldn't drag yours out too!" Charlie mock complained.

Colby stuck his head in, looking grim.

"Hate to break up all the fun, but we just had a near miss reported in Westwood. It might be part of the serial sniper case..."

"Or we might have an epidemic of copycat snipers - again," Ian said soberly, nodding his respect to Charlie. "Reunion later. It's time to get to work."

I really wanted to say 'Look Ma! No angst!', but a serial sniper case bad enough to drag Charlie back from England and Ian from the east coast doesn't qualify as fluff. Oh and putting Ian in a wheelchair either. (I imagine him getting shot in the line of duty and a bullet getting lodged in his spine FWIW. I also imagine it doesn't slow him down much to be on wheels. He's still the Bureau's sniper expert.) But at least this future fic has lots of lightness and a bit of fun in it. Sadly the original version (about 450 words) was a lot more fun. (Anyone curious about it is welcome to email me for a copy of the original rough first draft to see what they missed getting this down to 300 words.)

To anyone who has read Virtue - did your mind automatically go to Matt/Kit? /snickers/

I confess to being lazy about the spoilers. There's not any big ones in the fic, but I didn't feel like adding up all the guest star ones and figuring out which I needed to spoil Don and Charlie being married.

Very special thanks to beta melissima for her assistance with this fic.

Re: Confession
Nice work on this! Poor Ian, I think it would be rough on him to be in a wheelchair. Not so easy to go camping in one! Nice to see they have basically happy lives, though. (And congratulations to Dr. Kittner!)

Feel free to post the rough draft at numb3rs_gen_het. *Puppy Eyes for All She's Worth*

Thank you! And cookies to you in appreciation for you commenting so regularly on my fic. It's nice to know I don't just put these things out into the ether. (Or would that be ethyl formate? Hehehe)

"Mmm Fashnik like mmm cookies." (Sorry BTVS quotes always come to mind whether I want them or not.) /big grin/

I'm a serial ficcer so that makes us a good pair. /cheesy grin/ (Though I've been off my game this month. I've barely written/posted at all it seems. /frowns/)

Yes, full time uni + concussion = unhappy brain. (Thankfully my profs have been very cool about it, but they can't make the stacks of homework or exams go way, they can just be patient while I slog through the backlog. /sigh/)

Well done, Emma.

As I said on the 'Roll' post, it's interesting that you put in a wheelchair because my N3BB is going to have a couple of our guys in one sooner or later.

This was a great piece... really. It's always great to see a reunion story now and again.

Nicely done.

Ooh really? I'm looking forward to hearing your N3BB plot then!

I've live the last couple of years with women in wheelchairs so it's hard not to let them sneak into my fic life as well. I've actually got a long fic where I put a major character into a wheelchair, possibly permanently, but it's languishing because it's going to be so bloody long. Gah!

I'll have to go peek at your comment on the Roll post. Mel put that one up so she gets the notification of comments on it.

I don't do much future fic, but this reunion story just felt perfect for the prompt - a quick view into the future, a snapshot if you well, and done.

Thank you for your lovely comment!

I've done a lot of caregiving in my life, am disabled (invisibly) myself so... /chuckle. As the saying goes, write what you know.

Yes, Ian is involved in a raid gone wrong at the beginning of the story and then later, we have another one of the guys taking a bullet that ends up leaving him in a wheelchair, whereas Ian's only in one for a relatively short time.

Still trying to pull the storyline together as well as work on my "Assaulted! series" and a few others.

Oh, I like it! I can't wait to see the finished product. I'm a huge fan of H/C and whump fic. There's definitely not enough in our fandom (good stuff that is).

I 'pass' as well despite multiple disabilities so salute to you and the rest of us who are 'invisible'.

Thanks for the sneak peek!

i very much enjoyed this drabble. you definitely maintained the balance between yay and ouchie quite well. i love future fics that pay homage to both because not everyone gets to live happily ever after- although i know ian is the kind of guy to make adjustments and then rebuild his life successfully and happily. it's just not everyone gets the spouse and kids and career success so it's nice to see the range of futures represented. and you didn't lose any of that balance cutting the 150 words although i too prefer the blend with the brotherly banter. :) nice job, luvie!
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on March 30th, 2010 11:32 pm (UTC)
Thanks, sweets! It helps to know at least a couple of people got to enjoy the full length version, you know? And yeah, Ian's very pragmatic so he'd adapt as needed and keep on pushing forward.

Okay there was a bit of angst there but it was angst wrapped in fun fluff. I rather liked "Dr. Kittner this, Dr. Kittner that."
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on March 31st, 2010 09:40 am (UTC)
Hee! I simply could not take that bit out even though it really wasn't necessary to the story. (There has to be some parts I get to leave in because I *want* to, right?)

And yay for you finally getting to say something other than 'ouch' to my drabbles! LOL /big grin/

Oh and yes my brain when to Matt/Kit instantly. I'm actually thinking about going there in the next Whitman.
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on March 31st, 2010 09:40 am (UTC)
HEE! That would be awesome!

I really do like them together.

Thank you!

I heart this. I love that Ian's working with the bureau, obviously kicking ass on wheels.

Now I want porny Ian/Colby or somebody, set in this 'verse. /greedy./
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on April 1st, 2010 02:42 am (UTC)
Ahem. Yes I did.

And I tell you, my brain went to that Pike/Kirk wheelchair fic in my brain only with Ian/Colby so damn I'm tempted to write that porn.

(Maybe not in this verse, but still... Where's the bad?)

I love this!

Very nice evolution of the characters and an awesome mix of angst and fluff. I'd love to see the expanded version!

(and the Ian/Colby wheelchair sex. *g*)
