Numb3rs Fic: Pi and Coffee
Posted to numb3rs_slash

Title: Pi and Coffee
Pairing/Characters: Charlie/David. Colby, Nikki
Rating: PG13
Spoilers: Judgment Call, High Exposure
Summary: David always notices Charlie but even more so when he's wearing a nice suit
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

"Last two boxes," Colby said with a huff as he plopped down two file boxes in a scant bit of spare table space in a war room completely overflowing with folders laid out over almost every horizontal surface.

"Sorry, not so lucky," David told him, looking up from where he was overseeing - and hopefully organizing - the avalanche of paper their fraud case had led them to. "DeWinter called. He's got four more boxes up on the ninth floor in organized crime."

Colby let his head hang down as he let out an almost melodramatic sigh. "Colby, climb the sixth street bridge. Colby, jump in the water. Colby, tackle the naked perp. Colby, carry these boxes."

"Hey, I was on that bridge with you," David pointed out. "And I was there - you did not have to tackle that naked guy."

"I still had to cuff him," Colby muttered. "And I'm taking it you're pulling rank on me so I have to go get all four boxes and not just two?"

"Hey, being backup supervisor when Don's out of the area really sucks," David teased, grinning widely. "Hey, be glad I don't ask you to get me coffee!"

"You don't drink coffee!" Colby protested.

"Yeah, so imagine how mean I'd have to be to make you get me some!" David huffed out a chuckle. "Seriously. Do you really want to trade places with me and have to be the one in charge of organizing all these files?"

Colby put up his hands in surrender. "You're the boss! I'm just the pack mule." He turned and headed for the elevators. "I'll be on nine hoping to convince some bored soul to carry half my boxes for me just to get off phone duty."

Before David could come up with a retort, he heard Colby do a low whistle.

"Check you out!" It took David a second to shift position enough to spy a head of curly brown hair and figure out who Colby was addressing: Charlie. "Looking all spiffy!"

"I had court today," Charlie explained and as he stepped into view David had to admit he looked great: perfectly fitted navy suit, crisp dress shirt and silk tie. He was also clean shaven for a change, a look that David thought suited him better than the slovenly academic appearance he normally sported. "Expert witness sort of thing," Charlie continued, looking down at himself.

When he looked up he apparently realized Colby had kept moving, was already past him and probably didn't hear that last part. Charlie looked a little like he was floundering, embarrassed at not realizing Colby wasn't paying attention anymore.

Wanting Charlie to feel like he was being listened to - David always tried hard to do that - he piped up, picking up where Colby left off. "Expert? Man, I think you look like a fashion expert in that suit!"

Charlie almost blushed at the attention and walked the rest of the way into the war room.

"Thanks," he said, acting kind of bashful. "That's saying something coming from Mr. GQ."

David gestured down to his own smart suit. "Got to go with the look that says success."

"As opposed to what I usually wear that says 'I just rolled out of bed and threw on whatever was handy?'" Charlie teased.

"Is that what it says?" David taunted back playfully. "Because there's been a day or two when I wasn't sure if you were still wearing what you wore to bed."

"Ha, ha," Charlie mocked. "So, Don called from Orange County. He says you need my social network analysis on the fraud case?"

"You've got it?" Charlie plucked a printout from his briefcase and held it up with a flourish, at which David let out a groan of relief. "Thank you!" He headed over and took the sheet from Charlie's hand, reading it quickly. "Five of the names on your list? We've got files on them - two of which I've already flagged."

He quickly bustled and gathered up the files, waving Nikki over from her cubicle.

"Yeah, Mini-Don?"

"I need you to fax these files down to the Orange County office. Don needs to see them ASAP. And this." He put Charlie's list on top of the stack and placed them all in Nikki's hands.

"Yeah, sure thing. Beats being stuck on the phone. Hey Charlie," she added off hand as she turned to go.

"Hey, Nikki." Charlie gave her a polite little wave and a smile and then pulled another printout from his briefcase. "I made an extra copy." He held it out for David who crossed over to take it.

"Are we that predictable?" David said with a chuckle.

Charlie's mouth quirked up at the corner. "I'll take the fifth." As David sat down on the edge of the nearest table to review the list again, Charlie cocked his head at him. "Do you mind if I ask you a personal question?"

"As long as it's not X rated or 'do you ever wear anything other than a suit?'" David tossed back. "Though in your case, when it comes to suits," he gestured appreciatively, "I'd be in favor!"

Charlie definitely blushed that time, though just a little. "Hey, as long as the conversation entails everyone staying fully clothed I think we're safely PG13." He cocked his head at David, looking at him as if he was a problem he was trying to solve. "That fragrance you're wearing? It wouldn't happen to be by Givenchy? Say, perhaps Pi?"

Now it was David's turn to flush, though he knew his dark coloring would save him from the embarrassing heat rising to his face. He'd only tried the cologne at the store because the name reminded him of Charlie and he found he liked it a great deal. He just never figured anyone would ask about his cologne. Not even Colby did.

David finally managed a little shrug. "What can I say? I like Pi."

Charlie stepped closer, still eyeing him. "Pie, P-I-E or Pi the mathematical constant?"

"A man can't like both?" David teased, suddenly wishing he wasn't sitting so he could back up a little. Charlie too close was definitely distracting and David was starting to have some very distracting thoughts about how Charlie would smell in Pi cologne. Out of his suit. Naked. In his bed.

"I like both," Charlie said, his tone almost sly. "I like lots of variety in life." He was so close his fingertips brushed the fabric of David's pants at the knee. "When you get offered an either or choice, isn't it tempting to say yes to all of it?"

"Yes," David agreed. "It is... tempting."

Charlie leaned in, taking his time with a slow inhalation in David's personal space.

"Pi smells really good on you," he murmured as he was retreating.

"How does it smell on you?" David asked.

"Don't know," Charlie admitted. "I've never had the opportunity to try it on me."

"But you do know you like the other kind of pie."

"Very much so," Charlie said, licking his lips. "Lemon meringue's my favorite, but chocolate creme's a very close second."

David nodded, smirking. "For the variety."

"Yeah," Charlie said. "The variety."

David stood up and moved into Charlie's personal space, taking the offensive finally. He adjusted Charlie's silk tie then ran his fingers down the length of it, ostensibly to smooth it.

"I tell you what: you bring me some pie and I'll share my Pi with you. Deal?"

"I don't know, a whole pie for just one spritz of cologne?" To his credit Charlie didn't back down. If anything he looked ready to match David toe to toe in this little flirting dance they'd somehow fallen into. "Not the best value ratio."

"I never said a whole pie, but I tell you what. You bring a slice of pie to my apartment and I'll trade you a decant of my Pi. Then you'll have both kinds."

Charlie carefully adjusted the already perfect lapels of David's suit jacket.

"Agent Sinclair, I'm not sure it's appropriate for me to bring baked goods to your private residence after hours." He stepped away, gathered up his briefcase and headed for the door, only stopping when he was clearly just out of earshot of the bull pen. "8 o'clock then?"

"What about your brother?" David asked.

Charlie looked thoughtful for a second. "You're right. He's going to make you work late. Nine o'clock then." He gave David an appreciative once over, playful in its intent. "I like coffee with my pie: strong, black and at that hour, decaf. So be ready."

"All my forks will be in a row," David teased back. "So don't be worrying about me."

"Gangway!" Colby appeared carrying two more boxes, his noisy entrance covering Charlie's silent escape. "Couldn't find anyone to bring the other two so I have to go back."

"I tell you what," David said, hooking his thumb towards the door. "I'll get the last two boxes if you'll cover for me for like fifteen minutes. I have to run out and get something."

"Dude, the only place you can get to and back that fast around here is the coffee shop."

"That's where I'm headed," David admitted, already half-way out the door. "I have a sudden need to buy a coffee machine."

This was written for ladygray99's birthday. Yes, I know I posted birthday fic for her yesterday, but I had also wanted to do a little ficlet in return for the ficlets she was doing for people as reverse birthday presents on her LJ. (Go read them and poke her to publish them! They rock!)

So this was supposed to be a little ficlet of Charlie/David (a pairing L has been getting me into via her in progress Charlie/David novel which I adore!) flirting in the war room. It just got kind of meandering as I avoided the hard part of the flirting which made it kind of long. Since it got long I figured why not actually publish it. (It also gives me more leverage when I try to talk L into publishing her little gift fics! Hehehe)

So this is me giving the Charlie/David pairing a try. It's not easy, but I think there's definitely some fun challenges to be had with it. I don't have it nailed yet, but I may keep trying. /grins/

Enjoy, L! And happy Cinco de Mayo! /sends virtual homemade tamales your way/

Very special thanks to beta melissima for her assistance with this fic.

Hee! Poor Colby the pack mule. Although I'd take carrying boxes of files over organizing them any day...

Loved this, hon. Aggresive!Charlie was hot, as was nervous!David. And pie? (Or Pi?) Yummy!
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on May 6th, 2010 04:37 am (UTC)
Hee! Thanks! I've been the pack mule enough to grumble about it with a chuckle myself. That said, I would rather organize since that part I tend to like!

/shares pie with you/

P.S. Pi smells yummy on me too.

Aww, I love their flirting and the name of David's cologne.
David going to get a coffee machine at the end was priceless, LoL

Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on May 6th, 2010 08:51 am (UTC)
FWIW David's Pi cologne is real and it does smell very nice!

I can just picture David splurging on one of this nice machines they sell in Starbucks just to impress Charlie. Hehehe

Thanks for reading!

(A) David love!!!!!!!!!!! FTMFW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(B) David/Charlie rare!pairing love!!!!!!!!!!!! FTMFW AGAIN!
(C) Wanting Charlie to feel like he was being listened to - David always tried hard to do that -
YES, YES, YES! This is just one of the many reasons this pairing WORKS! David has always tried to listen AND hear Charlie when he spoke and to make sure others were paying attention. And they just work well together. I'm always surprised by the lack of this pairing in the fandom but we've said many times, David doesn't get much love (although he has been recently and OMFG!YAY I LOVE IT!)

I loved Colby the pack mule, David admiring Charlie in his suit, and Aggressive!Charlie leaning in (PS OMG - you know how I love David anyway, but to know he smells good? *flops around on the floor* Nothing sexier than a sharp dressed, good smelling man. *wants to jump on David when Charlie's done with him*)

I know you don't like to cross-post so... allow me to rec this at davidsinclair. *skips away happily at the David!Love.

Edited to fix jump around flailing with glee typos. *continues to jump around and flail with glee

HEE! You are so cute. I'm tickled that you were so gleeful over this.

I'm with you on the sharp dressed man who smells good. I had a friend in college, a big Hispanic guy (linebacker sized) who would come by my house dressed in a nice suit wearing very nice cologne. My *Mom* always gushed over how good he smelled - that's how good it was. /grins/

This pairing's not easy for me to write, I admit, but I tried to use those things that feel like them: David taking great care with his appearance, him taking his supervisor role seriously and him making the effort to really listen to Charlie even when everyone save Don's already tuned out. /grins/

And you're welcome to post links to any of my stuff; you don't even have to rec it. I just hate making headers with a fiery passion so crossposting is something I do under duress if at all. (Tam had to talk me into crossposting Ladygray's birthday Charlie/Ian fic at Ladygray's Charlie/Ian comm!)

BTW, I usually give comms a link to my fic for their focus, like once a year I give the Ian/Charlie comm a list of my Ian/Charlie fic to date. Did I ever do that for your David comm? It would be harder to put together since it's not pairing specific, but if you wanted to I'm sure I could review my back catalog for David-centric fic. I know I have some. The entire Tel Aviv Series is all about him before he even met Don et al.

Anyway, thanks for the gleeful comment! You certainly livened up my morning. /hugs you/

P.S. OMG If you liked this? You are going to need to be resuscitated after you read Ladygray's Charlie/David *novel*. It's *really* good!

that was like the best flirt ever! I'm sure the walls in the war room are still sticky from all the sweetness!
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on May 6th, 2010 07:49 pm (UTC)
Hee! Thanks! We so rarely get to see Charlie as the aggressor, but I think once you get him going he'd be a wonderfully playful flirt!

*makes delighted squeeing noises* My crappy day has been made infinitely better by discovering this splendiferous, flirty, adorable David/Charlie! With bonus Colby the Pack Mule! Oh, Emma, you have redeemed my day. *hugs you through the Internet*

Knowing I made your day brighter makes *my* day so much better. Thank you, hon. ♥
princess_noname on May 6th, 2010 10:51 pm (UTC)
that was lovely! David/Charlie is not very popular pairing (or at least I didn't see a lot of it) but maybe it's a time to change that fact:D and David as Mr. GQ?:) that's soooo true;) as the serie advanced Don and Colby were becoming more and more "cool" about dressing code and such, but David is always Mr. Perfect;)
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on May 7th, 2010 01:43 am (UTC)
Thank you! They are definitely a rare pairing - especially for me! In over 600 Numb3rs fic I never got around to writing David/Charlie before! /marvels/

David's definitely upward mobile and wants to look the part. Don? He's already established himself in the FBI and doesn't need to impress anyone with his clothes anymore. Colby? He's already impressed the brass with his spy work so he's earned a pass to dress down for a while. /grins/
lilacs_roseslilacs_roses on May 7th, 2010 03:44 am (UTC)
Well... while I loved the interplay and the story itself... the jury is still out with regards to the actual pairing of David and Charlie. I don't know why, but it's one of the few in all of any fandom, that I just don't 'get.' That said, however, it might grow on me at a later date /chuckle.

BTW, loved all of the conversations here /chuckle.
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on May 7th, 2010 06:47 am (UTC)
Charlie/David is *really* hard to write IMHO. That said, when ladygray99's Charlie/David novel comes out you *must* give it a chance. She's found a way to make it work and I admit it helps that it starts out pretty gen, but you get why they have a bond in her book. I'm really enjoying reading the in progress work so I'm sure I'll be pimping it once it's published as well.

For now? I promised her I'd try on the pairing for a present for her and I had fun with it at least. :-)

Thanks for giving it a shot!
ladygray99: Charlie Blueladygray99 on May 7th, 2010 04:14 am (UTC)
:-) See this was great. And as you can see there is David/Charlie love in the world. I love flirt!Charlie and I love Charlie in a suit and I love it when a guy smells great. I think you really nailed David's voice here and did a pretty good job on Charlie's as well.

I love it when your muse gets the better of you. I can't wait to see you write more of these two. Of course I'm up for you writing damn near anything so I don't know how much my vote counts. ;-)

Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on May 7th, 2010 06:49 am (UTC)
/hugs back/

I found it amusing that I felt good with David's voice (especially when he's talking to Colby) and my Charlie (whom I always feel natural with) felt totally alien to me. I really have trouble writing aggressive Charlie, but I felt like David's too smart to make a play for Charlie at work, so if you wanted war room flirting Charlie had to be the instigator.

And your faith in me is inspiring. /is honored/

okay, not my pairing but it's such a rare pairiing I couldn't resist checking it out. The flirting is awesome as are pie and pi.
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on May 31st, 2010 10:51 pm (UTC)
Not mine either, honestly, but ladygray99 is writing a Charlie/David novel that knocks my socks off so I had to give it a try. I can't wait for the fandom to see her take on these two.

Glad you liked it! Thanks for giving it a chance!
