Numb3rs Fic: All Enemies Foreign and Domestic
Written for numb3rs100 Challenge #262 – Foreign

Title: All Enemies Foreign and Domestic
Pairing/Characters: Don
Rating: PG13
Word Count: 300
Spoilers: None
Summary: There are many ways Don could have exercised his service gene other than the FBI
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

Spray from high waves splashed Don's already drizzle-damp slicker as he lowered his binoculars and headed into the shelter of the ship's bridge, strong winds buffeting him. Once inside he tossed his hood back and briefly took the helm from the coxswain. "New heading," he explained, grabbing the radio. "This is Captain Don Eppes on the Coast Guard cutter Kitteridge! I've spotted the ship Homeland Security sent out the alert on and we are changing course to intercept!"

Don strode into the dusty desert tent and the officers waiting inside snapped to attention, saluting briskly. "Our orders came through," he stated, rolling out a new map on the table. "Reliable intel has identified a terrorist training camp, northwest of here. Air recon confirmed it." He tapped his finger firmly on the map where he'd marked it. "We're going to take it out."

"The Eagle is about to exit the building." Don's eyes expertly scanned the crowd as he replied into his earpiece. "Hold for all clear." Spying a man working his way through the throngs to the edge of the rope line, Don alerted two other Secret Service agents with a subtle gesture, ordering them to intercept. Once the man emerged at the edge Don could see a slight bulge under his jacket. The two agents came up behind him, handcuffed him, extricated his handgun and swiftly escorted him away.

The plane banked into the final turn as Don made his approach, flying over deep blue water, the controls responding to the slightest touch. He landed his fighter jet expertly on the aircraft carrier and emerged, whipping his helmet off in exhilaration. Hitting the tarmac, he accepted congratulatory high fives from the fighter pilots on his squadron. Two high profile targets down on this bombing run: no casualties. Mission accomplished.

I confess I originally intended this to be a fusion fic where Don's team is part of The Unit, but I didn't want to try to squish that bunny into 300 words or less. I've had it for too long to give it short shrift.

The title phrase 'all enemies (or threats) foreign and domestic' came from remembering Dennis Haysbert say it in that wonderful deep voice of his on the The Unit.

AFAIK there is no USCGC Kitteridge. I profess to have no knowledge of military type information; this work is all fictional, not based on actual practice.

Once again it's Monday and the fic coffers at numb3rs100 are barren for the week. That's the second time in memory that's happened since Mel and I reestablished the comm. I really hope it's just a statistical aberration and not a sign of doom for our fading fandom.

Very special thanks to beta melissima for her assistance with this fic.

Re: Confession
I know, I know, but it still felt GAH! to see the comm empty today.

There are a number of people that I'm looking forward to life letting them drabble again, so I know we're not abandoned or anything, just low on fuel, you know?

Oh, this is lovely. (And makes me want to work on my Soldier!Don AU) Also, Don in a uniform? I'll be i my bunk...

FWIW, I haven't been able to pay n100 the attention it deserves because N3BB has been eating me, and I'm betting it's the same for most of fandom. I guarantee that the trent won't continue this week though! *chesire cat grin*

Once again, great job, and I love seeing all the wonderful places your imagination takes you (and us!)

NICE! I think my favorite is Secret Service!Don, though. Followed closely by fighter pilot!Don *stifles any fighter pilot!Don/John Sheppard crossover plot bunnies* NO! No time! :P

Loved the different views of Don. I'm pretty sure secret service!Don is my favorite (and reminds me of President David Sinclair with Don and Liz as secret service agents and ... David/Liz... and... Yeah. *flails*)

If my drabble muse would return, I'd be a happy camper. *waits patiently*

I read this last night but... my housemates got a dog... and... well... ... the dog was sort of a gift for me... /scratches head... I'm still trying to figure out how much of the actual 'dog duties' are for me to take care of LOL.

At any rate, I loved this!! ... There are so many plot bunny potentials wondering around in there!!!

Well and nicely done :)

There's some great potential here for longer fic. I think any one of them would be great to explore...I think SecretService!Don is too much like FBI!Don, but the others? How can you go wrong?

And FWIW, The whole "enemies foreign and domestic" thing is part of the oath of office for officers in the military. I had to research it for a fic I wrote in another fandom, so that's how I know. I love the words...so stirring and patriotic. Basically, I love a man in uniform who's doing his duty. Explains a lot about the fandoms I follow...

Great job!
